PS3 not ginormous?!?

In the picture of katarugi, or whatever the hell his name is, holding it it looked the same size as the orignal ps2.

If the PS3 is supposed to be "so powerful" I wonder if there will be heating problems by making it so small. I mean Sony apparently doesn't care about such things given the current problems with the PSP and previous consoles, so probably there's going to be about 500 glitches when the PS3 first comes out.

That pic is fake. There is a pic of someone holding it and it is about the same size as the original ps2 - the mock up anyway. Who knows what the store shelf ps3 will look like.

Regardless I think it is a major disappointment that the next-gen consoles are still major clunkers. How the hell can you release something as slick and streamlined as the pstwo and then go back to huge clunkers? What does that say about next-gen? Next-gen = huge clunkers?

Frankly, I'm amazed that more people aren't complaining about the continual huge sizes of consoles.

it's not the size that matters....as long as it makes great games, im there...and from the looks of your sig, i thought you'd feel the same

They just tell you size doesn't matter, but we all know the truth deep down inside no matter how much it may bother us ....... anyways I won't be buying any one of these systems at least until end of 2006.

It matters because if it's ugly and big it won't look good next to my Virtual Boy, 3DO FZ-2, Genesis Model 1 w/Sega CD model 1, and my Neo Geo. Those were all small systems that barely took up any space, so I don't understand why all these years later they can't build something similar in size ...

Of course. It's a Sony product, so initial defects are guaranteed.

Alright, you worry about it being pretty, and I'll be off playing God of War 2.

 Yeah my Genesis barely takes up any space next to my PSOne.

Isn't next-gen great?

Anyway, who the hell knows what size they'll be. I bring my xbox everywhere and it's never been a problem.
and about that quip about the xbox not being built from the ground up and being like a PC-- that's just BS. all consoles use PC parts...but I've yet to see a pc with 3 PowerPC cores...

damn I spent 30 minutes looking for a pic to use for comparison and someone already did it.
oh well here's what I'd put together.

my.php

the smaller and lighter the system in the ps2's case made it no better than a can of coke!
wile the xbox was heavier and bigger it also held more inside, frose less, saved and loaded quicker, had better graphics, had a HARD DRIVE not some pikey memory cards.

have you sony traters not realised by the slughter of the playstation two by the xbox is because of the "luckyness" and waight of the xbox it was only that heavy because it had a hard drive and a better graphics card and a whole load of other things that the ps2 just could NOT compete with. the only thing it had more or ill push it to "better" than the xbox were the games. and that was only because sony had like 2 years PLUS the experience of the playstation one to build up its games whereas microsoft jumped straight from desktop "ancientness" to a modern beasty black box of surprises.

Man, it must be hard to be that dumb. I've convinced myself that you must be some kind of joke.
"sony traters"? What is that? I think people who moved to Xbox would be counted as "traters," but even that is stupid.

have you sony traters not realised by the slughter of the playstation two by the xbox is blah blah blah yakkity smakkity...
I wonder if you're talking about sales...I sure hope not. I refuse to believe that someone could carry such misperceptions.

This is the best part:
the only thing it had more or ill push it to "better" than the xbox were the games
Oh, is that all? Well, yeah. Definitely, being really powerful is much more important than having good games. Of course, we all know that the games don't matter. All that matters is how powerful your system is, because that is directly proportional to the size of your [insert appropriate sexual organs/mammary glands here].
Sarcasm ends --> here.

Oh, it's what? Two freakin' inches longer? It still looks thinner than the PS2. This is not a problem, not even close. It's the games that should make your decision for you, not two inches.

Everybody seems to be missing the point.

As technology continues to advance ALL consoles should be getting smaller not fucking bigger! Yet the opposite seems to be happening.

With more processing power the system will need a bigger cooling system to keep it for overheating thus the bigger size.

Yet the opposite seems to be happening.[/QUOTE]I dunno I always figured that the SIZE of consoles would sort of level out. As technology advances, you can do the same amount of work with much less size. So like with the slim PS2, it does the same exact things as the launch PS2, but with the advanced technology it can cram the same amount of power into a much smaller space. Or like all the GBA's that keep getting smaller and smaller. When you jack up the power and make a new console I think it balances things out.... there's like a whole ratio equilibrium thing going on. Every now and then though the ratio is a little lopsided... if the efficiency of technology is disproportionately large to the increase in power needed you end up with a polite-looking thing like the gamecube. Anyway this is just me pulling theories out of my ass here so anyone feel free to contradict me.

yeah, as jkam said, a lot of the size is prolly due to cooling.

i forgot where (think it was in some article on ign) but i'm pretty sure that i read that at least for now, Cell is gonna be cooled using a water cooling system instead of fans because it runs at a higher voltage. and fitting in the pump and the cooling system itself, not to mention everything else that goes into the system, all adds up to a bigger machine. but come on, it's not like the mockup looks like a tank - it's just a little bigger than a ps2 (non-slim kind that is).

There's not a console or a piece of electronics in the history of the world besides maybe a plasma TV that looks good sitting in a living room. They should all be hidden away somehow, IMO so I could care less what these things look like because I will never be looking at them...

By staying the same size things are, in a sense, getting smaller. If things weren't getting smaller as they got more powerfull the PS3 would have to be the 5 foot monster in that pic. They're finding new ways to fit more power in the same space.

The power is increasing exponentially in comparison to the size. The PS2 is 10x (?) stronger than the PSX but its only 2x bigger. The PS3 is 10x stronger than the PS2 and its the same size.

I think theyre doing a pretty good job fitting 10x the power into the same sized box.

It has to get hot so it can grill burgers and steaks.

If the PS3 could really grill burgers and steaks it would be the best console of all time even if all the games sucked ass. Seriously, steak is freaking delicious.

If the ps3 grilled burgers and steaks I wouldn't mind the huge size so much. In fact I might want it a little bigger so I could fit more food. ;)

Water cooling system? What happens if there is a leak or something? Water cooling doesn't sound good for a game machine if you ask me. What is it they use in those high end computers? Liquid nitrogen? How bout some of that? :D
