PS3/PC Maxdrive 160gb HDD $31.49 at Best Buy!

Southard

CAGiversary!
I work at Best Buy and discovered today that the Maxdrive we have had lying around the store dropped from $129.99 to $31.49 when I was doing price checks with the telxon. I bought the last one. This is a great deal if you need an external hard drive. Also just as a side note when I plugged it into my computer it turns out the drive is actually 230gb!
No such thing as a 230gb external harddrive. I smell shenanigans.
if u format any hd u lose space. it was a 250 if anything, but even then. he magically got a bigger hd with such a low price.

agreed with the shenanigans part

That's not quite true...

However, drives that are advertised as 250gb actually are 237GB in size. My guess is he saw the 237 and rounded down to 230 since it's a nice multiple of 10 for everyone.

ya how nice of him to round down. he helps the community out soo much with his amazing posts that help us understand.

everybody lets rush to bestbuy now and look for a box that has a 160 gig hd, yet it really has a 230 gig:lol:
Was it open box, or something? That seems like a pretty big packaging error.
actually this is happened to me before. I got an 80gb when i thought i had bought a 200gb (packaging was 200gb, a maxtor retail one). the serial was one number off so i'm guessing it was a packing error at the factory. Still i was pretty pissed off.

Dude you guys, I work at Wal-Mart and was using the price scanner on a Kingston 1GB and found out it was only $1.99. The best part is that when I got it home, it turned out to be 1TB instead of 1GB! What a steal!

AWESOME I GOT ONE TOO

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people? I also got in on this deal, although I can say I didn't get any extra space, but the pricing is correct, it's around 30-35 on clearance.
This thread is filled with jerks. You guys are making CAG look bad.
This place is about as bad as gaf anymore when it comes to assholes and pricks.

wow, what has happened to this place? I never post, just a lurker.
but it seems just over the past few months, it has gotten so bad here.
what was once such a mature place is now becoming like gfaqs.
i hope it gets fixed.
For anyone looking for a deal instead of being stupid, 10% off

That link doesn't work. Its that 10% off code right?
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171563

for that coupon it says not valid for Video Game Hardware or Accessories. Isn't this deal for the
"Datel Maxdrive 160gb"
pa.90253.1.jpg

which would fall under the video game category in Best Buy's computer? or would it be under Computer HDD?

Same here, my porn folder is still transferring from 5 hours ago.

I can't find this item in Bestbuy.com - so it might be a huge YMMV, depending on the store.

Also, if this product is made by Datel then I wouldn't trust it for longtime storage. Don't they make really crappy console accessories?

Thanks for the information either way, OP.

It's worse. At least gaf is funny

There's only a handful of hard drive manufacturers in the world, so your true concern would be the quality of the housing and interface electronics. Worse case scenario, you can pop the drive out of the casing and hook it up using standard PC connectors.

EDIT: After some info-scrounging, I found this: It's a 3.5" hard drive, so you can't use it to replace the internal PS3 hard drive. It's a BB clearance item, so some stores may still have it at full price, and others will have varying prices. The SKU is 8348816, and after altering another locator link, you should be able to [ click here ] to get an idea if it's available near you.

EDIT2: I'm not sure of the validity of the altered locator link, despite it listing the proper name of the product. You can go in store and possibly have a salesperson look up the SKU on RSS to find availability and pricing around the district. *SKU and varying pricing from this SD thread.

They look pretty bad now that others have verified the deal. Pretty good deal, too.

Very disappointing that this has become just another venue for prepubescent dick swinging, though.

Well, datel won't be the maker of the drive. All they and other companies do is buy the drives from western digital, seagate etc. and throw them in external boxes.

no, i dont understand why people were believeing him. u need proof and it didnt sound legit.

whatever thought. if you wanna believe things go ahead but without proof its just bs and sticking up for something that has no proof isnt justified. thats why. making a remark like people are dicks because they didnt believe him is just ignorant.

No, I think the point is that you were acting like a dickhead for no reason. It's one thing to say, "I would like to see proof" then this:

On top of that, what have you contributed to the community besides your witty remarks? At least the guy was trying.

The ignorance would be in those acting like douches to this guy for posting a deal on here. If it's not a legit deal then it'll be taken care of, the thread doesn't need a dozen jackasses posting worthless comments.

Quoted for truth. Quit being an asshole to people who are trying to save you money.

fucking makes me sick seeing this shit get pulled.
$29.49 at my store...but we've been OOS for a while. Definitely a price drop, but not necessarily a universal one in terms of total.
see, at least it's proven legit. but some of you assholes need to get a damn clue. it's not like this has been posted 4+ times. the guy's just tryin to give a legit deal. CAG is starting to go downhill anymore... its honestly disgusting me...

i dont find anything good enought to post i dont post, but i will reply if theres a good deal by saying thanks.btw this could have been a pm u no.. as for to get back on topic the findings that some guy made dont match up with the op's find.

so theres not really proof for what the op found still. if u wanna use the slickdeals find as a clue then fine. but there should be more evidence to support his claim. it should be a evident find. at least scan the receipt or reply with what model it is.

he said he opened it and it was a 230 gig which rather seems odd and sounds false.

only possible way is if he happened to take another hd out of another box and put it in the 160 somehow. i hardly hear someone that opened a item and it turns out to be a better item. sorta like buying a 40 gig ps3 to get a 80 inside.

im wrong for saying its impossible but its more improbable then anything. and i can see why people are getting pissed that it was flamed a bit, but sadlys theres just not enough to go with it. more proof and i would be glad this guy gave the heads up but it sounds too iffy.
of couse it was a bit disrepectful to make fun of it, but coming in and going off topic about mods not doing anything about it, or how some one is being a dick is even more disrespecful to the op.
see, at least it's proven legit. but some of you assholes need to get a damn clue. it's not like this has been posted 4+ times. the guy's just tryin to give a legit deal. CAG is starting to go downhill anymore... its honestly disgusting me...
not quite he said $31.49, the slickdeal finding was $29.94. not the same thing. it doesnt match up so how can this prove its legit?

actually it is very common for hard drive to be bigger than what the box said. I think people were getting 160gb in 120gb box from WD, and got note saying free upgrade. It is even more likely since it is a third party repacking hdd. Now the question is rather this apply to every one.

As for the price, many clearance are not universal. the point is that the item is being discount and people need to look for it. A difference of $2 is really nothing. Again this is the kind of thing you would know if you been here long enough.

If you been here long enough most deals are rarely backup by proof. The best example is the Tru clearance a year or two where a new member post the clearance price, and people were flaming the guy but later on it was proven by long time member.

i give up. sure whatever theres always someone.. using the whole ur a new member crap is bs. and i said its not impossible so why argue about it?

as for ur comment with the hd. that common thing i loled at. i googled it and found just one post from a guy that said that theres a thing to bypass the hd to make it bigger. and thats of course not the same as just taking it out of the box and it being 230 gigs over 160 gigs.. btw remember that 230 gigs is pretty much impossible. at 250 is more after a format. but whatever lets look past that

if u can prove that comment with it being very common to get a bigger hd i will def consider this thread more of a reality.

its not just for me, its for everyone looking into this cag deal. i wanna see how many other things that can be found to make this rlly something to look at

You were one of the first to call out the op so you dont believe it and now try to backtrack now that the price is real. My point was about people not believing in deals that are too good to be true. Over the years on this site there are almost no fake deals. worst case is some deals that apply to a specific location.

maybe not very common, but not unheard of. right now it is like 230 so I dont feel like search for it. But it is something people encountered if they hang out at deals site long enough. Like others have said, Datel doenst make their own HDD and just put in hdd from other companies so there is a chance for error.

i said its not impossible so your proving nothing but that your avoid looking up the fact he got a 230 gig hd over what the box stated as a 160 gig.

there shouldnt be bs talk if it cant be proven. its resonable to believe theres a 160 hd that is clearanced at that price. but seriouly the whole difference in the hard drive size is very unbelievable.

wanna argue more? im not trying to cause anything, but i just want to get down to this deal that people came to defend yet have proved it yet. from what the op wrote to the minimal facts, this find is improbable and most likely a once and blue moon thing to happen if it is true.

until theres more proof with the whole hd being 230 gigs(which is a odd number) over being what was labeled as a 160 gig. that part is up in the air. but certainly its worth a look at if ur near a bestbuy to check out the hd selection and maybe u might find that clearance hd.

just remember its not that anyone thinks its impossible and cant happen. just sounds too fishy to be trusted. you can tell when deals sound too good to be true sometimes

the deal is never about 230gb, the topic clearly said 160gb. the OP simply said what he got. Even you admit there is a possibility, but you are flat out calling the op lying in the beginning. I wont have a problem if your first post said something sounds more like a one time mistake.

I went looking for this deal, none of this brand at my BB. However I did pick up a Hitachi 500GB external USB HD for $90. They had about 8 different types of drives out clearly marked on clearance. The Hitachi was the only one that was a deal though, everything else could be found cheaper elsewhere.
