Will 1080p games down-convert to 1080i or 480p?? Will 1080i games actually play in 1080i?? My HDTV doesn't do 720p..... just 480p and 1080i.

Depends on the game... But most will either be 1080p or 720p. If 720 isn't there, I think it has been kicking people down to 480p as it doesn't upscale.
 
no conversion is done by the ps3, whatever the game resolution is then that's what it's going to show as.. so if you have a game that outputs 720p, and 1080p, if you only have an 1080i tv then it's going to show at 720p..

Okay I may be confusing things here. I think that (480p) is the default setting it goes to. I havne't had much experiance with it myself. I know, it makes sense that it would go in order backwards... But I don't think that is how it works.

What I was saying is that if you have a 720p game, which most of them will be, and your TV doesn't have that setting, then it will default to 480p.

Now as far as going from 1080p to 480p... I can't say for sure.
 
if that is true... that sucks balls...

i played around with it a little and the whole setting up seems more complex then it should be
 
No people, don't cause confusion.

1080p games will play at 1080i on your 480/1080i TV, don't mind them.

Games that are max 720p however, will default to 480p.
 
To further add, if the back of the game says 1080p, that means 1080p and 1080i.

My tv's max is also 1080i, and every 1080p game and demo I played runs at 1080i.

so my friend has a 480p/1080i tv set...

resistance will run at 480p since its a 720 p game? (even though ps3 is set up to 1080i in menu)

Sadly yes.
The PS3 does not upconvert the resolution to 1080i, so instead it will display at 480p.

(it does not "downconvert" it simply plays at that default resolution)
 
wow.. that does suck..

i luckily wont have that prob.. but i could see ppl with older sets getting upset about this.. i know my friend will lol

Hey, I was right... I just said it kind of backwards. Yes it will kick all 720P games down to 480p because the TV doens't support 720p.
 
Well, I got the PS3 and here is my early results. Blue-Ray movies play in 1080i. Games vary so far: Resistance Demo plays at 480p, NBA 07 demo plays at 1080i. GT HD plays at 1080i. Motorstorm plays at 480p. The retail game Full Auto 2 plays at 1080i. There are a couple of games that do state 1080i on the back of the package, so never say never. The only thing I've had to go 480p is Resistance and that was expected.

Remember, my TV only does 480i/480p/1080i. It will not display 720p AT ALL.... and this was via HDMI-DVI cable.... with optical sound.
 
Right, Resistance is a 720p game so it knocks you down to 480p. Most of the games are going to be 720p so are you able to stand it?

Actually, most games out right now are 1080i/p so hopefully this trend will continue.....
