I just bought a 120gb ps3 slim (model cech 2101a), and to be honest, it's really not THAT quiet compared to the old one I had (mgs4 edition 80gb ps3). I can hear the fan hum.

I haven't used it extensively, so I can't tell if it'll spin up fast like my old one did after a while, but it's definitely not SILENT. It seems like it doesn't get as warm though, but again, I haven't used it for long periods of time.

Anyone know if I'm crazy and I was expecting too much, or if I got a defective unit?

i've been using mine for a couple of months now, and i definitely hear it humming, but nothing too loud. i don't think sony ever claimed to have made the slim models silent, though, just that it uses less power and therefore generates less heat...
Mine's dead silent. It doesn't have a hum noise, never goes into "rocket mode", etc...
I agree, mine is dead silent. If I turn off my radio, TV and air conditioner, I have to put my ear right up next to it to hear anything. I could have 100 of these things running and probably not hear them.
i really only hear the occasional cracks and pops of the plastic expanding, but that's about it.
Same here. Don't really hear the fan or drive except a rare occurrence; however I do get fairly frequent loud cracks and pops after playing for a while. Since the unit is on my desk only about a foot away they actually startled me the first few times I heard them.

That's how mine is as well. Even playing RDR for six plus hours didn't kick the fan into overdrive and it was only slightly warm.

I have both a slim and a 60 gig PS3. The slim is quitter at idle but equally as loud during extensive gameplay.

I just bought a slim after my 60 GB model died. Its alot quieter than the old one before it died. But I have noticed something about the slim, the game discs get really warm. I never notice this with the 60 GB, has anyone else had this happen?

My discs get warm also, not red hot but I can feel some heat. My slim will kick into hyperdrive and be pretty noisy. It is sitting on top of an unused subwoofer so it gets plenty of air. I measured the temp in the area of the back exhaust the other day at 115 F. :hot:

When playing Red Dead Redemption(or really any of the Rockstar games I have)the fan kicks onto the second level within 20-30 minutes of playing.

With RDR it kicks even faster than that.

I too have noticed that the discs get warm and the back of the case of the PS3 gets pretty warm too. I have it up on top of a wooden table I used to have my PS2 and Xbox on back in the day, so it's out where it can get alot of airflow around it.

The fan is pretty audible to me, even when I have the volume up on my LCD screen I'm using with the PS3.

However, it does only seem to kick on into hyperdrive mode with games from Rockstar. Most of my other games don't make the fan run as much.
