The iPod touch 3G is probably going to drop on 9/9 at approx $299 (for the size I'd want). I've been wanting to pick this up for a long time and I've got the $300 waiting for the release for a while now...but now a $300 PS3 Slim is making me second guess myself.

Does the iPod touch have a novelty factor that wears off quickly? Or for that matter, does the PS3? I'm just looking to think about it for the next couple of weeks before deciding. And no, I'm not getting both...$300 is big chunk of change.

I'd go with the PS3 if you're getting it mainly for games. I've got a 1st gen iPhone and I love it because I work by myself all day and it's my sole source of entertainment while working, but I never play with it at home unless I'm in bed or taking a shit. I will say that it's coolness doesn't wear off though. I still love having access to the internet at all times in my pocket, and there's a bunch of great games now. I would spend the money on what you think you'll use the most.

I have a 1st gen iPod touch and it's been a great investment. I use it a ton for listening to podcasts, when I'm away from home I use it for internet, and of course it's great for music. I wish it had a camera like the Iphone, though. I'm surprised they haven't added that yet. I don't use it for gaming much. The battery life isn't that great and anytime I'm out and know I'm going to be gaming I bring the DS with. But I could see how it's a decent gaming platform and there is lots of cheap stuff out there.

So true. I have an iPod Touch, and it's awesome. When I broke my leg, it was definitely a life/sanity-saver!

hey if you want to spend $300 for ipod touch you should get an acer aspire one netbook instead. its the same price as ipod touch but its a fully working computer with 160gb of memory and a sleak small size. im on mine right now

to answer your original post, i would go with the ps3 becuase i think its a better value.

No to both.

If you already got a Xbox 360 a PS3 wont be that much of difference unless you want a Blu Ray player.

Skip the Touch and get an iphone

iphone will never happen. I'm not switching carriers to get it, that is why I've waited this long for the touch.

Commute a lot?

Get the iPod.

Anything else, go for the ps3.

Fiance has a Touch, and she primarily use it to either play music, or playing either Stick Wars or Bejeweled. Don't get me wrong, it's a really cool gadget, and it's fun to whip it out on the bus or at work, and play a round of bejeweled before the start of a movie, but when you're at home, the ps3 is a no brainer.

The question is, what situation will you find yourself with more: in or out of your house/apt?

Then again, since you have a XBL account, I'm going to assume you have a 360. I have both, and at times, having both does seem pretty ridiculous, but I'm a collector of sorts...

Personally, I'd get the Touch.

ps3

blu ray player/ media player/ ps3 games/ 120gb of memory

ipod touch
over priced/ gimmicky touch screen media player/ fragile/ 8-32gb

I'd skip the iPod Touch unless you're getting an iPhone. The Touch just loses so much of its usefulness, unless you're on a college campus with free wi-fi. The games are okay, but you'd be better off investing in a DSi or PSP Go if you want it for games.

On the other hand, skip the PS3 if you don't have an HDTV. If you already own an XBox 360 there's little incentive to buy a PS3 other than Blu-Ray. Yes, there are some great exclusives, but if you're debating the choice then you're probably not completely sold on those.

How come everyone keeps labeling hard drive space as memory? They aren't the same.

Also, you probably have never used an iphone or touch because they arent overpriced for what is crammed in a package that small. The "gimmicky" label you place on the touch screen is unfounded and idiotic and I have dropped both my iphone and touch many times and both are still going strong with barely any sign of the drops. As far as HD space, my 8gb iphone is way more than enough space for me....
Also check out the Zune HD. What you get for its price is very impressive

$219 16gb
$289 32gb
The Zune HD is pretty awesome but I doubt it will have the app support the iphone/touch has

I do have a 360 and that is part of the reason I hesistate to get a PS3, I can't fit the time for both in a day. I get one, one and a half hours of gaming in on any given day. I do have an HDTV (entry level 42 inch Vizio) so blu ray would be nice...

I think the touch is probably for me since I've been waiting for it for so long, but maybe I could get a used second gen dirt cheap and see how long it takes me to save up again to get to $300...

Thanks for the input, it helps me sort through the pros/cons.

ipod touch 3G? am I missing something here....unless it's the phone, you won't have a 3G network.

I have an iphone and I think the games do have a novelty factor. There are a couple that I play every once in a while, but hey, if you spend $.99 to $3 for a game, you shouldn't expect it to last long.

I suppose considering the technology I should be more specific. 3G = 3rd gen.

Which carrier do you use? There's some persisting rumors that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon in late 2010.

I'm sure they'll spread out eventually and Apple can most likely make more money being on multiple carriers and selling more phones to more people (and thus selling more Apps) than AT&T could pay them for continued exclusivity.

Point being, if you'd rather have an iPhone than an iTouch, it may be worth waiting a while longer.

PS3 I'd probably decide on whether you want a Blu-Ray player given you said you don't really have time to game on it and the 360. I went with a stand alone Blu Ray player last year for that reason--I don't come close to playing all the games that interest me on the 360 so no need to add a second console since I just don't game much.

I love Blu-ray though as I watch a lot more movies than I play games and they look amazing.

For me, it will definitely be an iPod Touch. Although to be fair, I already have a PS3 Fat, so the choice between an iPod Touch and a PS3 Slim is kind of a foregone conclusion.

Also, I am working on developing my own iPhone App, so I would have to get an iPod Touch at some point. (just for testing)

If not for those factors, I would probably say PS3 Slim. $300 is a great price for the value that comes packed in. The hard drive is especially nice. Most users would be able to make do with a 40 Gig drive. 120 Gig is going to have most PS3 Slim owners wondering what to do with all that space. The 360 is really beginning to look long in the tooth after this price drop.

I'm with Sprint and I pay $65 a month for two phones with unlimited text and there isn't a carrier out there that can beat what I've got going there so I'm not going to switch it up. I'm all about keeping my monthly expenses down to a minimum and increasing my cell phone bill by any amount is not appealing.

What kind of stand alone blu ray player did you get?

That's understandable. I get a good deal with Verizon as I get a 20% discount for being a state employee. But the iPhone may go to all carriers eventually--Apple's main incentive is to get as many people as possible hooked and buying apps.

I got a Sony BDP-S350 for $150 from SonyStyle.com on Black Friday last year.

I dropped my 2nd Gen iPod Touch one time and the screen cracked.
i kinda hate apple becuase they always overcharge for everything, and their products are more about looks to me
I generally agree. The iPhone/iTouch have been the one product I kind of wanted from them (but still haven't bought).

Before that I had no interest in any of the other iPods as they always cost more and did less (lack of built in FM tuner was a killer for me) than other mp3 players. Computer wise, I've just stuck with PC as it's the norm in my field and I don't want to hassle with converting files etc.

But the iPhone/iTouch is a nice device--I just have little interest in a smart phone, especially at current data plan prices. And I don't use my Creative Vision M that much any more, and probably wouldn't use the internet on the touch much since if I'm at a hot spot I usually have a laptop with me (and probably wouldn't carry the touch everywhere anyway since I'm not one of those people walking around with their MP3 player everywhere--mine tends to stay on my desk at work).

But it's still the first of their devices where I think they do have something unique that beats the competitions offerings IMO. Cost is just too much as I need at least 30GB on my MP3 player, but I'm not willing to pay more than $150-200 since I just don't use the MP3 player much these days as I just put all my MP3s on my laptop and my office computer and listen on their for the most part.
