PS3 Slim *Update*
Source? $99 seems a bit ridiculous for backwards compatibility...I could understand $49 but at $99 people would likely opt for the PS2 slim.
Again, take this for what its worth. Could be BS - just what she told me over lunch - There will be no price reduction on the slim per se. More GB - 120 - for same price $399. Sony will claim "reduction" because you are getting more GB. The current phat PS3s remaining will be sold for $299 (kind of what they are doing now if you look at their bundles - 2 games; or one game & one blu-ray). IMO this is crazy. They should sell the slim as cheap as they can. No one is going to buy the "but you got 40gb more" argument - especially when you can upgrade your HD to 250gb or 320gb for $50 in about five minutes. If Sony plays this right they could hit it out of the park. Unfortunately, it sounds like their marketing strategy is so muttled that I predict the slim release is greeted with a wimper rather than a roar.

So if this info is true, the Phats will drop to $299 while the Slim stays at $400 and the only difference is you'll get 40 GB more space? What else does the Slim supposedly offer?
What else does the Slim supposedly offer?
If it stays at $399, it'll offer Sony a way to profitability.

Along with a loss in marketshare :bomb:

As a consumer eagerly waiting to get a PS3, all I care about it the price point...$299. If I can get a PS3, be it phat or slim, for $299, I'm sold. A couple of games bundled in wouldn't hurt either. The only real draw for the slim is the reduced heat and size and less power usage.

Upgrading the HDD is not common knowledge to non CAGs like it is for PCs. However, upping the storage space by 40G isn't much if you need to use it as a marketing tool. Double it to 160G (from 80G?) then you can have something to market.

However, if the public is of the thought that $400 is too high a price point (comparably speaking, it is), additional storage space won't make much difference.

I'd say $99 is implausible, but like others have said, this is Sony. If 6 months ago, you were to tell me that a PSP that can only play downloadable games would retail for $80 more than a PSP that can play the same downloadable games plus UMDs, I'd have called you crazy.
Source? $99 seems a bit ridiculous for backwards compatibility...I could understand $49 but at $99 people would likely opt for the PS2 slim.
$99 seems reasonable to me. Which retailer has the most PS2 games? Gamestop. And they're all overwhelmingly used, so Sony doesn't see a single red cent of those sales. Buying used PS2 games is money that could be spent on PS3 titles (Sony is hoping people buy new rather than used, as they would at least they have a chance get a piece of that sale).

So discontinue the PS2, which cost $100, offer BC at the same price and save money associated with manufacturing the system. Sure, the PS2 does turn a profit on every unit sold but it still takes up retail space that Sony hopes will be used to stock the PS3-Slim. And if they're wildly fanciful dreams of systems flying off the shelves upon price cut come true, then they'll need it.

I've honestly used the BC on my PS3 once for Yakuza 2.

I'm stoked I bought a 60GB. Best decision I ever made (in terms of a console). Got a refurbished one and it works like a charm. Plus it's totally BC. Why they didn't keep the emulator from the 80GB, i will never know. But, oh well, it seems like they are going to fix that for everyone.

I'm not sure if the PS3's software BC was exclusive to the Slim. My guess is that it'd be available for all PS3s that don't already have it.

They got rid of it because of costs. They essentially had the chips from a PS2 inside of those PS3's in order to get BC to work.

So do you think that BC in downloadable form will be a firmware upgrade, or an emulation program you buy for $99 on PSN? (if it really will work on the fat models)

Those of us that paid full price will hopefully get it for free ( but I'm not holding my breath).

Also, I doubt that someone who works at a retail store is going to know much about the cost of the download...

Totally agree. If they do not drop the price of the slim they are making a huge blunder. IMO. Apparently the $299 everyone mentions is 299 British Pounds which roughly translates to $450 US. They would deserve a Kick in the crotch if they actually raise the price.

It would be $400 if it's $299 pounds. Stuff is typically more expensive over there.

Highly doubt this rumour. For starters random target employee wouldn't have confidential pricing for an item they aren't even selling at their stores before anyone else.

Second its doubtful they would phase out the ps2, the ps1 is still being sold new in japan and it would make no sense at all to slash the price of the ps2 4 months before discontinuing it.
Source is a reliable contact at Target. She is also the one who told me PS2 is being phased out and that they are no longer restocking. Again could be true Could be crap, but she has never been wrong in the past (correctly informed as to bc being removed, skus and hard drive sizes, various bundles, re-emergence of bc with MGS4, and wii stock in its erly release) . Agreed - $99 is a bit steep but notice that it is exactly what you pay for a slim now? Typical Sony.
She's full of shit. Target employees aren't told any secret information, the fucking Sony reps don't even know this stuff before hand. WOW, Target is phasing out PS2? Anybody walking by the clearance rack could've told you that. Wii stock? Store-specific Target shipment numbers were leaked before launch.

Price drops 100 euros there, it drops $100 here. I see you don't really know anything about the current pricing structure Sony has going with the PS3. Or really anything for that matter.
Release date = September 2, 2009
Announce date = August14, 2009

Will not have Linux OS, and will not have BC. BC to come via download ($99).
hmm, the release date of madden is august 14 and its rumored that there will be a slim madden bundle
They can't discontinue the PS2, it's the only way for them to make money.
If they do discontinue the PS2, maybe they'll go the way of Sega. I like their software ALOT more than I like their overpriced hardware.

The ONLY reasons I bought a PS3 were for: GTA4(which is multiplatform anyway) and God Of War 3

Every other game I've been interested in has become multiplatform.

As for them charging $100 for software BC, if they try that shit they can shove it up their ass. I already paid these assholes $400 for their shitty console, I'm not paying them $100 more when I can find a cheap phat PS2 on Craigslist for $30. fuck Sony.
