"GamesIndustry.biz reports that Sony is considering a digital distribution service that would bring popular PSone and PS2 titles to the PS3, rivaling Nintendo's downloadable back-catalogue plans for the Revolution. Unnamed sources claim that Sony has been discussing the technical requirements needed to provide this service, and in turn, investigating the possibility of remastering select PS2 games so that latter parts of a game can be streamed over a network while earlier segments are being played. It comes as little surprise that Sony is interested in jumping on the digital distribution bandwagon, but the company will have to overcome some hurdles if the effort is to come to fruition.

It should also be noted that plans to introduce a digital distribution service that supports downloadable PSone titles on the PS2 have also been tossed around.

I don't know, but I'd be hard pressed to download a ps2 game. My poor DSL can only handle so much (but at 14.95 a month, who cares?).

At this point in the game there are no original ideas, only slight variations and "improvements." Just give me the content and let me decide if it's good or not.

I don't quite see how dling PS1 and PS2 games is quite the same as having titles back to the NES, but...yeah, whatever.

Isn't PS3 confirmed to be backwards compatable with PS1 and PS2? Thus making the downloading thing obselete. Who knows how much they would cost as well, I'm sure the actual discs would cost less than the price of download by then.

Agreed. This sounds asinine.

Maybe the PS3 will support PS1/2 game back-ups. But that could/would continue the slump video game sales are suffering. Why buy when you could rent and back up the game on your PS3?

Somehow downloading Warhawk onto my PS3 doesn't sound as appealing as downloading Super Mario RPG onto my Revolution. But that's just me.
Sounds cool...imagine all the hard to find PS1/2 games that you would be able to download...
Assuming they'd take the time to add those.

Which they probably wouldn't.

Yeah, of course. They'll go through the games and then say "This game is rare, dont add it"

Everyone loves to steal Nintendo's good ideas. ;)

I'm not sure what the point of this is, since the PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 game disks. Sure, some hard to find games might be nice, but Sony would have to make most of the games really cheap to compete with people actually going out and buying the disk, and I doubt they will.

Plus, they'll need a nice big hard drive for this, and I get the feeling we wont get one bundled with the system.
Where's the goddamn hard drive to store my downloads?
What should be mentioned is how is a harddrive, big enough to keep a decent supply of downloaded games of this size, going to be affordable after the price of the console itself?

Also, everyone is talking about who stole what idea from who. I hope no one thinks Nintendo created the idea of this, yes they're using it as a main selling point but they didn't create it.

Who did? Video-Game wise, what other console allows you to download games from its past library? Sure, Nintendo and Sega had the X-Band and Sega Channel years ago, but you could not purchase and save those.

I don't remember the X-band offering games by itself; only the option of playing Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition against someone named "QueerBashr1034" (who would promptly whoop my ass).

Downloading a 8gb of ps2 will take a ridiculously long time. I don't think Sony is going to really go thru with this idea. Most consumers don't have enough bandwidth. The only exceptions are students who have at least a T3 connection. Maybe Sony has some super secret device that will make our internet super fast.

NOT!
