According to 1up, sony plans to use the Xifre online structure on the Playstation 3 in order to help narrow the 4-year online head start that MS has over them. In a transcript of Viacom's Q2 earning's report conference call, a deal between Sony and Xfire was revealed.

Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market.

And with Xfire being owned by MTV...ugh :puke:

I don't really care about XFire, but just shelling out the cash to have someone else do it is probably the wisest thing for them, that is, it's better than anything Sony could do themselves.

This is a great option because it links the PS3 into a PC system similarly to what MS has with XBL linking with MSN/Windows Live messenger(icky name). It also gives Sony the majority of the features that people want online. Personally 90% of the features of XBL hold no interest to me but universal usernames and the like would be great.
Lazy fuckin' Sony .

Too bad they can never come up with their own shit .
Some people are taking the Sony negativity a little too far...

This just means that Sony's online plan could be really good. Xfire is a pretty cool.

I'm sorry to be that way but they caused my attitude .
Too many "we coulds" and not enough we dids .
PS2 online was an utter disappointment . I'm not alone in that opinion .
Does this mean that they didnt have a plan up until this deal went through? That's what really worries me...
I spoke with a Sony rep at Best Buy , months ago , and asked him about the PS3 online , and If they were beta testing it . He said as far as I know it's the same as PS2 , individual from game to game .

Which is why they have this xFire deal.

The deal wasn't just made today though. No one but Sony and the XFire crew know when it was made.

I love it how people bitch whenever sony does anything. They bitch when they use xfire to improve their online system calling them unoriginal. I geuss you guys would rather have the ps2 online with no features........

Well, it's certainly better than the PS2 way of handling online. I need to learn more about what X-Fire actually is though since I don't play PC games.

Trashing Sony on message boards is the new "cool" thing to do online. They're rebelling against the man, man!

I didnt question it being made today. I questioned that fact that it just went through, as in official.

Supposedly this was released in an early August financial report, but I don't have anything to back that up.

I guess we can count on a PS3 barrage of commercials from MTV very soon.

Guy with towel on his head: YO YO YO We gotz the #1 video of the day son! it's.......... PS3! Yeah Son! PS3 is so HOT not only is it a video game system it's a Music video. Word......................

Mindless drones in audience clap.

Anything is better then their old style online. I never used Xfire for PC so I don't know much about it. I hope it's not a rush customization.

Or maybe they will stick to proven online service on PC or their Xbox/360. As Richlough eluded to, the reasoning behind this growing bashing is because SONY is full of BS and keeps dishing it out.

The last thing I heard was that SOE was designing it and hosting the Sony servers themselves.

Seeing how xfire has been around for quite some time it has been proven and has a very large userbase.

Sony has had years to come up with their own shit. They should have come up with something when the network adaptor for the PS2 was released. I'm not sure if Xfire is a good service or not but at least Sony had the presense of mind to know they were outmatched.

This is only good xfore is solid. At least Sony is still doing a few things right they are still third in line for money right now though

You're right I remember logging on with my TG-16... oh that's right this shit hasn't proved itself on a console yet. What works for one system might not work for another.

The day pc gamers and console gamers can play together is the day i stop playing 1st person shooters as its not even close to be able to compete with a keyboard mouse player. With Xfire hosting this is a huge fear of mine into cross platform/pc gaming. VERY VERY GAY, man SONY blows.

Please explain how this wouldnt work for the PS3? Thats like saying a game that comes out for ps2 wont be able to work on the xbox if that game was made for the xbox. They are basically taking what they have on the PC and putting it on the PS3.

Quake 3 Arena allowed PC gamers and DC gamers to play each other online.

Why are people still talking like this is actually happening? It was proven to be false a few posts up in my last post.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer spoke with 1UP regarding the incorporation of Xfire into Sony's online plans for the PS3 and the integration with Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. Kramer is responding to the Viacom Q2 earnings report transcript which read, "Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market."

On behalf of Sony Online Entertainment, Kramer attempts to clarify the earnings report's statement: "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title. This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

"We're in talks with those guys [Xfire] about implementing the technology, but cannot discuss how we'd be implementing the technology."

Mike Cassidy, CEO of Xfire spoke with 1UP to clarify the company's position on our report and the Viacom Q2 statements: "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further."
Is xfire like Gamespy ?
More like an aim that shows what your buddies are playing a way to join them in their servers

the problem is that this is only for one game which leads me to believe that there will be several ways for ps3 games to play online. in other words it is up to the developers to provide online service. theoretically if you take a dozen games, you could have a dozen different online gaming services unlike MS's unified online service.
