Psi Ops - Funnest game I've played in a while

CAGiversary!
Preface: I've really been bummed with finding a videogame lately that hooks me. I don't have a whole lot of time to game anymore so I get anywhere from 3 to 4 games a year with probably 2 to 3 games during that time that get played anywhere from 1 hour into it to about 1/2 way through the game. At which point I usually get bored. Anyway, I was on a roll around this time last year...got KOTOR and probably put about 80+ hours into that game, then Splinter Cell (yes the original). I bought SC off of ebay a while back and played halfway through the first mission before getting frustrated with it's trial and error missions then it sat on my shelf as I played my beloved KOTOR. It wasn't until several months later when I was looking for something different that I put SC back into my Xbox and came to realize what an awesome game it really is. Anyway I played through SC and also picked up Links 2004 which satisfied my golf game junky needs. But recently I've struggled with games I've tried getting into. Picked up Max Payne for $5 at Target and got about 1/2 way through and just got tired of the trigger enemy...bullet time...shoot enemy "thing". Then I tried Thief thinking how much I liked the stealth in SC, I'm definitely going to like Thief. Well there were many things I didn't like about Thief, mostly the crappy maps, the pitch black darkness, and my inability to sneak up on someone and club them. The darkness is a little ridiculous sometimes in that game. One time I went up this narrow hallway leading to a door and there was a torch on the wall next to it...thinking I needed to go out the door I water-arrowed the torch and found out the door was locked. At this point my TV looked like it wasn't even on and for the next three minutes I tried backtracking the hallway unsuccessfully...I ended up reloading. Other than that the AI of the guards in the game was pretty cool, but I just couldn't get by these annoying issues. Which gets me to Psi Ops...

Played through the first stage of the game last night and once I got to the Psi powers the game became incredibly fun. The first time I threw an exploding barrel into a guard, I couldn't help but chuckle a little. But when the other guard came around the corner and I TK'ed him into the fire from the exploding barrel, I couldn't help but laugh. The story so far is way generic and if the first level is any indication of level design... the future levels are probably going to be the cookie cutter do this objective to get one step closer to completing the main objective type deal but I'm okay with that just so the disposing of enemy's stays fun. If anyone's looking for a goofy-fun TPS, this is the game.

If anyone else has comments on this game, feel free to post.

Yeah, Psi Ops isn't exactly a groundbreaking game, but I also think that it is a really fun game

I tried to tell everyone this when it came out. The game is just flat out FUN TO PLAY.

I spent hours in the training room after I beat the game just playing around with the powers and giant bowling ball.

Absolutely brilliant gameplay, I think. Some issues that pissed me off (the psi creatures at the end were frustrating), but overall, even after beating the game on a rental, Im thinking about buying the game. The physics were amazing (god bless Havok :) and the powers themselves were well executed.

I enjoyed tooling around the training hall in the demo, and picked this up used for $20 at EB. Great game, a good mix of Metal Gear and Jedi Academy. I always enjoy throwing someone off a bridge/cliff/catwalk/etc to their death.

Plus the fact that you can make a guy's head blow up with mind drain is pretty cool.

I love the demo from the VOL 5 exhibition. I spent awhile in training just killing the guys, one after another and throwing them around. A very fun game.

I agree; great game. I'm about halfway through. Now that some of the later game elements (aura mines and enemies) are starting to show up, I'm beginning to wonder if the second half will be as fun as the first half. I really just want to throw MP1 guards around and into each other and off cliffs and into incinerators and crushing machines. Still, I think I'll like things better when I get more experience with these new challenges. Plus, there's always the psi practice room for tossing guards about.

Occasional glitches (including an odd absence of all sound effects) bug me a bit, but the game is still great fun. Level design is indeed linear, but that hardly matters when I have so much freedom while dispatching my enemies. One reviewer (at IGN, I think...) mentioned that the levels felt less like real places and more like deathtraps for unsuspecting guards, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Neither would I! It hardly matters when the gameplay is this fun.

The boss fights are fun to. They mix up the pace by throwing classic-style pattern-based battles into a modern action game.

I wish that Psi-Ops included in-game Dolby Digital (especially in a game with this many objects flying around), but I realize that hefty clock time was needed for the Havok physics and the not-too-shabby visuals.

My summer job ends tomorrow, and I can't wait to dive back in to this game.
