If you want to see our stream where I shoot my kids accidentally, and we run into the bug with coop play, you can see it here until they remove it:

http://www.twitch.tv/crunchewy/b/577440929

I'd skip to 2:30 as we are just setting up before then. It sucks that it has this coop bug. Once they fix it maybe we'll do this regularly on the weekends. It was fun. You also get to hear my wife in the background at one point. The USB mic worked great. I didn't even need to lower the game volume.
Why does this game not have online co-op? Ridiculous, it would be a blast.

I'm so sick of these local co-op games leaving out online coop! What the fuck? Are the servers that expensive?

Lag would be problematic. I assume that's the reason. If I hear back from mossmouth I'll ask him. Or wait for that PS4 2.0 system update and find out how well it works.

I don't get that excuse because there are tons of smaller downloadable games that have online and perform just fine. Outland has it, so does Crash Commandos, and both of those are pretty big action games where lag could screw things up. If they can make it happen, why can't everyone?

I forgot about that 2.0 update. We should check it out on Spelunky if/when that ever actually hits and see how it goes.

A lot of it is that compared to making working netcode, local co-op is relatively easy to implement. I've heard from a lot of indie devs that it just isn't realistic for how much money and time it would take.

To put it in perspective, think of how many AAA games with multi-million dollar budgets have issues with online multiplayer (even small issues like lag). If these are present with that much money and that many people, it just isn't possible for many of the indie devs with few people that have very little experience.

One example is the dev of Towerfall said that he tried to get online multiplayer working, but because he couldn't make it work without lag everyone he had try it online found it extremely frustrating because the game requires so much precision. I imagine spelunky would be similar

Yeah, there's a reason I don't watch football. I didn't watch the game, I'm assuming the dolphins lost close. Football is just too full of frustrations to be any fun, especially in close games where one close call changes the entire game. Don't like any sport that puts that much onus on the officiating of the game.
They lost with 6 seconds left. The Miami coaches basically gave the game away; they had the Packers 4 &10 scrambling to make a play, and the Dolphins called a time out giving the Packers time to set up a play. The Dolphins did the same thing on a 1st and goal. :wall:

Maybe it's possible but not easy? Mossmouth may not have any experience with developing online play. I don't know. Definitely up for trying it out when that comes to pass.

And what endergeek said. Yeah.

I don't think you can blame the coaches for falling for that fake spike.

Yeah that's the excuse that I don't believe, because like I said there are lots of smaller downloadable games that require precision that do have online and work well. So when I hear that I just translate it into "we didn't want to spend the money to add an online mode."

Do you need to buy treasure keys to open every chest and cage in the Dust? I'm sittin on like 20k and nothing to spend it on. Also, is there an ability that let's you blow shit up without those bomb fruits, because I'm in a spot with one and I don't see a single bomb around here I can use to blow it up.

1. I don't think so.

2. I don't remember.

In a lot of cases it's not "I didn't want to spend the money". It's, "I didn't have the money". Not trying to make excuses for them, but that's just the sad truth. Many people only see the big successes (Meat Boy, Braid, etc) and don't see the hundreds of devs scraping by on no money. Rather than implement online multiplayer, Mossmouth decided to upgrade the graphics, record all new music, better animations, and put the game on 3 different consoles. All of these things take time and money and it all comes down to priorities. Working online multiplayer would mean sacrificing most of the time and money that went to everything else

If they say they can't get it to work well, I believe them. If they could do it it would certainly benefit them to have it in place.

Outland is published by Ubisoft. Crash Commandos published by Sony. Most likely they both had financial help to get those things working as well as they did

Evil Within review, though ive never heard of the site.

Also, I hate people who act like games with release date review embargoes are a death sentence for a game. They trot out a couple examples of previous games that werent great and completely forget the plethora of good games that have had release date review embargoes.
That review seemed pretty vague. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't really play it. I'm mostly joking, just seemed weird that they didn't say much of anything about the length or story quality. The $10 gift card at Best Buy makes this one risk free for me, but I suspect it is going to be sweet.

And yeah, embargo conspiracy theorists are stupid. I definitely think there are some instances where they will use them to dupe early adopters, but it is a fairly common practice nowadays.

This is true, and I shouldn't pick on Spelunky because it has a very competent single player. It's games like Chariot and In Space We Brawl where I feel like omitting online is a more egregious omission, since their entire game design is built around playing with more than one player.

Buy all the keys. You can only buy 6 I think, and you'll want them all. And yup, only bomb fruits can blow those up, but you can carry them from screen to screen. Get it close to you when you go to the next screen, then spin your sword on the next screen and it will follow. If you can't see anything on your screen that's probably what it is.

Yeah, Spelunky is a weird one because the original didn't have any multiplayer. The local was added for the remake. The original was also completely free, so I'm not even sure where the money came for the remake.

For me, the place where I don't give indies slack is gameplay. If the core gameplay is good then I don't mind if it has pixel art, no online multiplayer, etc. Because those things are financial barriers. The money excuse gets tired, but it's the biggest concern that any game dev faces whether they are AAA or indie, or anything in between

Ah okay. Yeah the shopkeeper has 6 on him. I assume those don't restock then? I thought the only reason he sold em was because I thought they would break if you're too slow on the QTE's for unlocking chests or something.

Speaking of indies and online not working, does anyone know why when I try to download Spelunky and Dust on PS4 it just quits to the main menu. They are in my download list, but I can't download them

Nah, they don't break, and they don't restock in the store. Some chests take four keys to open, and you'll need to open all of those special four-key chests for a trophy. I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll want to open all of those chests anyway because they all have awesome easter eggs.

Panthers shouldn't have been pussies and just gone for it on 4th and 1.
Couldn't agree more. Shame really, they are never afraid to go for it on 4th and 1. Defense playing miserably, why would you not go for it? On another note, OT rules suck....a game should never end in a tie. Not like that. Sure, if its 3-3 in triple OT, call that shit a tie. But not when there is scoring and a good game going on.

Yeah I found one early in the game. I saw another one that I couldn't open yet (only had 3) keys, but the clues around it gave me the hint that it would be related to another current PS+ game.

VVVVVV No plat, 19 trophies

Holy shit. So most people are gonna get one, maybe two trophies.
Ooh, a tournament candidate...?

My PS4 copy already shipped from Best Buy. I don't care what any reviews say--I'm going for the plat. :whee:

Dust really is a fun game.   I only gave it a chance because Tyler and Simmias said it was "great" or at least really good.  It is fun for sure.  I just wish they used normal people.  I honestly feel a little weird talking to rabbits.

Vig and co, why are you so excited for The Evil Within? Why do you think it will be a great game?
RE4 was amazing, I tend to rock at 3rd-person shooters, and it just looks fun, plus I'll probably be able to trade it in for $40+ when I'm done with it.

Gives me a huge RE4/Shadow of the Damned vibe. 3rd person shooter/survival games is an awesome genre when done right. I'm not huge on the horror part of it, but I can deal with it for the enjoyable gameplay, like I did with RE4/RE5/Dead Space.

4th and 2 on the opponent's 40?  Just go for it, Dallas!!!!  C'mon.  I'm fully with Stotch on this one.  More teams need to be more aggressive on 4th.

Special Teams killing Dallas.  Come on you fuckfaces don't make stupid mistakes vs the champs when you're killing them in every other area of the game.

I hate football.  I'm gonna play Spelunky so I can start relaxing.

 I've never heard of anyone playing Spelunky to relax. I think we finally brought him to the dark side Crunchewy!

Dust looks really good. I really dislike the Metroidvania style of games simply because I hate all the back-and-forth bullshit, though, so I'm hoping Dust doesn't have that same feeling of tedium.
