What's the point of being a Plus member and buying indie titles at launch? They either go free on plus or get heavily discounted really quickly.
- immediate gratification has value

- support the devs that make games you love

- waiting and hoping for sales on games you really want to play sucks, especially since not everything goes on sale.

i mean, you might as well ask why anyone buys anything while they still have even a backlog of even just one other game. the answer is, it's our hobby. that means we spend time and money on it. but certainly only buying one game at a time, beating and selling it, it would be the most fiscally responsible way to game [though if everyone did it the industry would crash and burn].

"If you don't have a backlog, you aren't a gamer."

- Me, 9/6/14

So I did some calculating and spreadsheeting.

I own:

131 vita games.

37 ps1 games (on this acct, more on another).

91 psp games.  this includes minis because i haven't had time to sort them out yet.

I think this little device could last me decades.  I need to sort out what's ps+ and what's not, etc.

I think that's more backlog on my vita that has no games than any other gaming device I've ever owned.

I never actually finished Bully, but would personally recommend the Wii-version (**gasp**), as the gesture based controls were well implemented. Really suited the experience - when fighting, doing classes or pretty much whenever they were utilized. Can't remember ever being frustrated. I hear the 360 version is glitchy as hell but I can't confirm if that's true. It does have the added benefit of achievements, though.
Really, the only part of the 360 version that is gameplay affecting glitchy is the shop class bike fix mini game. You have to input the button presses well before the promt appears on screen or you'll fail it. But since the sequences are always the same, just use a FAQ to know what comes next. I started the game on PS 2 but beat it on 360; thought it was great.

But considering this is CAG, I was wondering why members here that have Plus buy an indie game at launch that isn't initially discounted. Pretty much every indie game I've purchased in the past year has eventually gone on Plus.

Inb4 someone says "to support the developer." Personally I never understood that line of thinking. This is commerce, not charity. Also, from what I read indie devs make bank off the Plus deal with Sony. Not to mention the exposure. But yeah, again...even as a "cheap ass" I'll buy a game without a discount if I'm really eager to play it and don't want to wait.

Oh ok, idk. Like I said that's only what I heard from other people. I played on Wii. Not sure what exactly they were referring to (maybe framerate?) and their tolerance levels may have been unreasonably low.

Well, I was waiting for TxK from the day I heard Jeff Minter was making another game. I love Charlie's Games and I'm glad he's bringing Son of Scoregasm to Vita. I played Frozen Synapse on pc and can't wait to dig deeper on vita.

Is it really so hard to comprehend that the $5 I might save by waiting 5 months or $10 I might save waiting a year simply isn't worth it? If you asked me right now if I could pay $70 to play Bloodborne tonight, I probably would... even though it'll only be $60 at release, and $30 a year after. We buy what we want when it reaches a price we can afford, in relation to everything else we want. It's... true of almost every industry.

And just as important to me, if developers see/hear [niche genre] selling well on vita, it's more likely they'll develop/port their own game(s) to it. If nobody was buying stuff on vita day 1, we wouldn't be having the indie revolution we're having now. Heck, that's why we don't have any more AAA games on vita... because nobody bought stuff like killzone or tearaway despite the positive reviews. Sure, there are reasons nobody did (pricing, etc) but ultimately it can be boiled down to -- it's in our best interest to support what we enjoy. If someone doesn't have that kind of disposable income, that's fine too -- get it how you can get it.

I bought Infamous SS for like $24 from gamefly recently. That's used, so no money goes to the dev. But by not spending that extra $36... I can buy some extra vita games I want. It's an ecosytem just like anything else.

Doesn't really sound like bank to me:

In February, independent developer and Closure creator Tyler Glaiel put his game in the Instant Game Collection rotation.
"For us, yeah, the revenue was worthwhile," said Glaiel. "[Subscription models] are not a replacement for selling games traditionally -- Humble Bundle isn't either -- but it's super awesome Sony is doing this, because it absolutely helps in the end," he said.

As for the amount of revenue he got from the promotion, he was coy, saying, "I'd categorize it as a 'nice boost.'"

Jakub Mikyska is CEO of Grip-Games, developers of Foosball 2012, which was free in January this year. "The impact [of making the game free] was definitely worthwhile. Not huge, but worthwhile," he said. "I will also point out that putting our content on sale in PS Plus is important. Perhaps even more than going free.

"For the two games we had for free on PS Plus, the revenue from the free offering was between 10-15 percent of the overall revenue we made from each game," said Mikyska, who added that he would put his games up for free again if he had the opportunity.

"It is a great way to promote your game to the part of the PSN crowd that is most likely going to spend money and it is also a great way to give your game long tail sales," he said.

Mikyska noted that going with a free promotion isn't for everyone -- of course, if you have a hot game that everyone wants to pay you upfront for, then no, don't give it away for free on PS Plus. But, he said, "going free in the later parts of the game's life cycle can give you some nice revenue boost."

Brian Provinciano's Retro City Rampage dropped into the rotation in late December. He said publishers and developers are the ones who choose whether or not to put their game on PS Plus. "It's totally up to us. If a game's on there, it's safe to assume that the publisher or developer was satisfied with the agreement," explained Provinciano.

He said he doesn't have a method of measuring exactly the impact the promotion had, but he knows it had a positive effect, as it got the word out about a new intellectual property that most players had never heard of.

"It has surely helped build the brand," Provinciano said. "Looking at two data points, the number of players and how much they played shows that it's grown the user base and created fans. Over 125,000 additional players gave it a try and despite getting it for free, around 85 percent of them enjoyed it enough to play through most of the game."

Provinciano said PS Plus has given him and other developers another way to "keep the tail alive," extending sales. "I admittedly put Retro City Rampage in PS Plus too soon, but there were other factors involved. One being that the XBLA release at the time was uncertain, so I need to make the most of which platforms were. Secondly, I was excited for it to be part of the launch of PS Plus on PS Vita."

I'd bet that a straight purchase gets indie developers a much bigger cut per person than putting it on PS+ at any point, but the feedback and awareness is probably the biggest thing that they get out of it. Because Velocity 2X has been played by tens, if not hundreds, of thousands now, those that enjoyed it can act as marketers to preach the greatness of the game to the rest of the PS4/Vita owners for the next few weeks and when it goes on sale in the future. That's an incredibly valuable tool for Futurlab to have at their disposal for the rest of Velocity 2X's life.

I've always been a big fan of launch discounts as my ideal way to get a game at launch since it's a good way to encourage more day one sales than nothing, which would require me to be incredibly interested in the game to check it out at launch. I've said before that sales are the biggest part of PS+ for me since I can essentially make it worth the $50 with the savings on the games I purchase, which makes the free stuff less of an issue if games I already own or am not interested are offered on PS+ since I don't worry at all about whether a game I want to play will maybe possibly be on PS+ at some point in the distant future. I tend to buy things I want to play sooner than waiting years for the perfect sale or PS+.

Support the devs!
That's exactly how I feel. If new games come out that I'm excited about (especially on the Vita), I will gladly buy them Day 1 (preferably with a small discount, which has been common), to show my appreciation and support the devs. I did it with TxK, a fantastic little arcade game, and it doesn't bother me at all that the game became "free with PS+" later. I also did it with Rogue Legacy and Hohokum on Vita. If we, as gamers, just sit around and whine about indie games and complain about "not getting enough" for the measly PS+ sub cost, we're not going to get these types of games in the future.

If I want a game I buy it. sometimes I regret it if I dont play it right away though like fez. however steam world dig has never been free so I am very glad I grabbed it when it was 20% off for plus as that game is amazing

I'm much more likely to buy a new vita game day 1 at $34.99 than I am at $39.99. I don't know what it is but I just can't make myself pay that much for a digital only game.

Ah ok. I stand corrected. I swear I read devs get a handsome lump sum for going the PS+ route (100k is what was posted), but maybe I misread or they were mistaken. Or maybe that's not as much in the grander scheme.

I'm with you on buying discounted releases, especially when they offer things like cross-buy. My motivation for doing so is hardly about showing "support", though. I mean, yeah, that's what I'm essentially doing, but I won't get a game solely to make some kind of statement. If that makes any sense.

There are just so many quality catalog digital and disc releases for the PS3 that I have enough of a backlog that pretty much the only games I could justify to myself paying full price for in the entire time I've had my PS3 (since late 2008) are Dark Souls 1 (for the free CE upgrade which I ended up getting screwed out of [ fuck you best buy]), Dark Souls 2, and Ducktales (though it had a pre-order discount). I too would probably pick up Bloodborne at release at $60 if I had a PS4, though I don't think I can justify $460 at this point when I still have so many other games to play.

I bought AoT:Devil's Cartel and I am surprised by how fun that game is. I read some reviews and went into the game without expecting much but it is a blast to play. I did play AoT on the 360 but I skipped 40th Day. Maybe one day ill pick it up.

It's even more fun in co-op (40th day too). And it is one of those few local co-op that is genuinely fun without having to explain to your buddy "yeah then you have to hold L2 then press triangle to select the thing to do xxx" every few seconds.

Better get a little more credit, then. X5 hits this Tuesday, too.
Yeah I figure I'll get it too, especially if I can find credit at a discount. I'm surprised at how easy X4 is, at least compared to X2 and X3. It's good game, no doubt, but aside from the final boss fight (which I'm still slogging through) it was pretty straight-forward.

The other thing I grew up on (aside from Mega Man) was Guns N Roses, so I'm pretty stoked to see the GnR localized bosses in X5. So ridiculous.

I played the original and it was a great co-op game. I appreciate they tried to make an over-the-top action game with co-op in mind. For cheap enough I'm sure the sequels are entertaining.

Same, but still, been waiting for one.
There's something in the water
There's something in the deep
What happened to the summer?
It's swimming round my feet
Theres something round the corner
It's watching every move
Who says you won't recover?
What path you gonna choose?

Summer on this side ignores me
And It knows I'm imagining things
I wonder if it's time to explore it
Turn these thoughts into matter with me

Binding of Isaac release date announced -- November 4. It was announced as a PS4 IGC game at gamescom in 2013, so it's all but certain to be one of the PS4 games for November.

My body is ready.

Hope we get it on Vita. I have it on Steam but didn't like playing it with the mouse and I was too lazy to download the controller patch. I think I will like it way more with Vita controls.

Bought more than I have in quite a while on this sale a few minutes ago.  I ended up not able to get to a store and grab a psn card and for some reason sony was saying no to just taking my credit card.  Ended up buying through Amazon.  That makes so much more sense in the long run... though I had to delete my card afterwards because of the 1-click purchasing and the kindle one of my kids has that's tied to the account.

Anyway not that anyone cares but I feel the need to post it... I bought:

Mass Effect Trilogy (great deal, and I wanted the whole thing at once since I'm late to the PS3 generation)

The Warriors (wanted this game for a long time, I know I could just play it on my PSP Go, but eh... I wanted it on the console)

Crysis & Crysis 2 (my PC is never probably going to be capable, this is part of why I bought the PS3 last black friday to play graphically intensive games without the hassle of upgrading stuff in my PC)

Mirror's Edge (PARKOUR!)

Max Payne 3 Complete Edition

anyone that bought FUSE and is looking for someone to play with hit me up. I already beat it but I really enjoy it and dont mind replaying it again

no scrubs  :whistle2:$

Anyone here able to order Driveclub from the ps4 store for $29.99?

Can someone with a ps4 try? I'm not home right now.

Hopefully there'll be a big sale to make up for the slow release week. I'd love a huge psp sale someday.
did not expect much at all this week with Destiny coming out. Sony will want all attention on that game, so im not even looking for major sales tomorrow

Just checked, it doesn't show any price on my screen, blank in that area, and not available to order. I would have easily ordered it for that! :wall:

Same problem here. PSN wouldn't take my CC. Read that it was a somewhat common problem after the DDoS attack. Hopefully it gets solved quickly.

Hi there, first time posting in this thread, although i recognize some users here from the xbox sales thread. I finally upgraded and jumped into sony arms, from a 360 to a ps4. The thing is i'm all kinds of noob in sony ways. I've read this thread faq but i'd like to know the essentials of what i'm about to face. Would any of you point me out a thread in this forum or external to know how ps4 works? like creating an account, how ps store works, psn cards and all the little stuff you take for granted. Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you turn on the console and read carefully all the instructions on the screen. Its easier and its made for you to understand it fast.

It's pretty straightforward for most of it. Like Xbox Live, you'll need PS Plus if you want to play online for most games and if you want to get the free games. You'll get two free games per month, so it's a pretty good deal plus you'll find that PS Plus gives some pretty good discounts on other games in the store either for pre-ordering or when there are sales. The PS Store updates every Tuesday afternoon/evening with new content and occasionally other times for flash sales.

You'll probably find that most of it is pretty similar in setup to what you're used to on 360 with some small differences.

The stuff on the PS4 itself is all obvious. Non-obvious stuff:

* Use the web store to "purchase" all the free Vita and PS3 games that come with plus. Even if you don't have the consoles now, you may get them later and will be glad you locked in the games.

* PSN cards almost never go on sale, unlike the old MS point cards, so jump when there's a good deal (like the $5 GameStop coupon from last week that worked on cards).

PSN cards are on sale at Target this week, buy one card get the same card of equal or lesser value 25% off. If you have a target credit card you also get 5% off all purchases.

I'd love for the TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY PSP GAMES THAT ARE FREE IN JAPAN to be free in American and Europe.
Am I glad I will be dead in a couple of decades. First, information travels too quickly that it doesn't even have time to be verified. Now that the erroneous information has spread, not everyone will get the memo that it was a mistake. Every message board should be like Reddit, so when you post a comment, someone can correct you and you get the notification in your inbox. Those guys are some real forward-thinkers.

No. That was just North American first run consoles. The cards all expired in March.
Until about a few days ago, every retailer had that list of items described for the bundle, but by some force of magic the $10 voucher and music unlimited pass were taken out. I wanted that voucher for either Child of Light or for when Costume Quest drops next month.
