Ideally I'd like to see a hybrid of newer titles offered a la carte and older titles available to everyone who pays a flat subscription fee.
That's basically how OnLive does it. They have a subscription program which they add games to every so often and costs like $8-$10 a month and you can play them as much as you want, then they have everything else which you can either rent for a few bucks and play X amount of time (it's been awhile since I've checked it out so I forget how long exactly) or pay the standard $20-$50 to buy the game outright.

It didn't work great for them, but I think streaming was still a bit ahead of its time when they first came out (as in the technology + speed of the average connection were not good enough to get a quality play experience), so hopefully PSNow doesn't fall into the same problems.

OnLive blew their launch when they required a subscription to be able to purchase and play those games, which killed a lot of the hype early on before they revised their business model to be more a la carte and flexible based on what you wanted out of it.

You were saying that if you play the game for an hour and then take an hour break, that's two hours of four gone. The same would be true for a movie, so watching for an hour and doing something else for an hour would have two hours gone from the remaining time. The only difference is that one gives your four hours to play it while the other gives you 24 hours to play as much as possible. It's the same thing, just different amounts of hours to play the content. I think at this point, we're just arguing semantics.
I don't think this is really semantics so much as being 'right on'.

It's showing the conceptual difference between games and film. Somebody hears '4 hours' for a game, and instantly wants to play the entire time. Films are 'capped' at 2 hours, regardless of the rental window size. It's the exact same, yet people tend to think of the media so differently that it 'seemed' different to breakfuss (and many others, I'm sure) even though it's not.

This goes back to what I was saying about a game like FFTactics, where in a month window someone could put in 100 hours, where as with a film they'd still only put in 2. That difference -- the desire to actively 'use' as much of that rental time as possible playing, isn't semantics, it's the crux of the conversation as it directly relates to how expensive the service is to host (and therefore pricing).

Part of the beta is grinding out statistics -- they'll probably learn, for example, that most people use nearly 4 hours of their 4 hour rental. But how many hours do they use of a weekly rental? These kinds of stats are vital for them to be able to accurately assess cost/pricing.

When I rent a movie, I understand I am getting two hours of media no matter how much time they actually give me.

When I would rent a movie from Blockbuster, I would look at the extra features as bonus value since they wouldn't always be present. (this was the past, you see)

When I rent a video game, I expect to get the full amount of media time I paid for or at a minimum, to be satiated.

If I go to McDonalds and pay $7, I know exactly how much food I'm getting and its value to me.

If I go to Old Country Buffet and pay $14 and don't eat all I can eat, then it's wasted money.

It's not semantics. I'll try to clarify:

-When I rent a movie I am given a window of time to watch once it starts. Usually between 24 - 48 hours. I'm only permitted to watch it once, though.

-When starting a game in PS NOW, the 4-hour limit never stops. So even if I turn the game off, it's counted against me.

Therein lies the difference. I'm not claiming it's the end of the world, but movie rental periods are not the same. I'm given flexibility.

But like I said, this specific tier clearly isn't for me.

Hmm... it's already on my maintained 'want list' but I've long forgotten about it. Will check out. I haven't played any VP or Shadow Heart games yet. But I generally wait for solid deals or good lowball auctions to pick up ps2 games.

I wish there were more hours in a day. And more money in my wallet.

Decided last minute to bite on the Target deal ($10 back on $40) and am going to grab Wolfenstein. I don't actually need a ps4 game right now but I've got 100+ in target credit so will treat myself now rather than wait for a gamefly sale. And... as recently discussed the old school Wolfenstein games (Beyond, etc) are close to my heart.
Gonna be difficult to find deals on shadow hearts but i recommend it at its current price. Its my top rpg series ever, extremely good. Cant stress enough how much i wish this game was more popular

What? Your time window for movies begins once you start watching it and it never stops, but you can watch it as much as you want in that time window. It's exactly the same thing.

Frisky. What I'm saying is that the allotted time to watch movies is greater. It grants some flexibility to pause and resume at your leisure. How is that the same as a 4-hour game rental that never stops counting down once you start playing? I'm perfectly fine with only getting to play for 4-hours, but it would be nice if I could break those hours up within a larger window of time. With a few exceptions I *never* play a single game for that long in one-sitting. Hell, I started Far Cry 3 over the weekend and barely got 4-hours into the campaign.

As for re-watching movies, it depends on the movie/studio. I've rented some where the license only worked for one viewing.

Exactly. With movies you're getting a greater amount of time to watch a finite product with an exact time limit. With PSNow you get 4 hours to enjoy what could end up only being 1/20th of the total experience depending on the game.

Or everyone could rent Ground Zeroes.

Maybe those prices are a deterrent to keep people from overloading the servers. Either that or PSNow is just a lame attempt to pacify players who demand backward compatibility from the Playstation 4.

IGN had a good article, the weekly rentals are the only good price, all the others are way too much.

I mean a redbox rental is $2 a night, that would come to 14 for a week.  Where as PS Now averages $7 for a week.  People must be forgetting what it was like to rent games from blockbuster and the like.  I used to always do that!  and they were around $7 for a week.

for Playstation now every time frame doesn't have to fit every gamer and every game in every situation.  I would not in general consider the 4hr rental a good option but I can imagine situations where it would be appropriate.  Such as renting Sing-star, kart racers, sports games during a party.  I could see it as something to do while traveling and not wanting to pack along the collection of games.  Playing co-op games where only one of you owns the game other has little interest in owning or playing alone later... there are lots of situations where 4hrs might be a good alternative.  Besides as we have seen in movie rentals both physical and digital there is no one time frame that works for all and at least sony is offering a variety.

Damn. I FINALLY understand what Frisky is saying. Haha, dude, you are so goddamn literal about everything. So, yeah, this is a matter of semantics. Technically the timer doesn't stop on 24/48-hour movie rentals either. But you know precisely what I mean.

It isn't semantics when he was absolutely correct.

The only difference is window size, and the fact that we view film as 'finite' and games as this nebulous 'time quantity'. But that's on us, not the service, which works the same either way.

You hear movie rental and hear "2 hours of viewing" regardless of window size.

You hear game rental and hear "4 hours of playing" which is the full window size.

But for both, it's actually "X hours window for viewing/playing", with films often capped at 2 hours regardless of the window size.

I'm sure their goal was to buy Gaikai and use their service to completely fail to make a profit from it and let it go to waste.

The amount of time it takes to complete the game is irrelevant. It could be something super short like Journey and I would feel the same.

If I'm paying for 4 hours with a game, I'd like to be given some leeway with how I use them. I assumed I was paying for 4 hours of gameplay, not a rigid 4-hour window where any number of things could interrupt me. Heck, man, you're the one with the newborn so I'd expect you to see where I'm coming from.

No, I understand what you want and why you want it. But you were claiming what we were getting is different from films, and it's actually implemented pretty much exactly like films.

You essentially want 'flex-time', but that brings a lot of issues to bear.

Firstly, Sony needs to take into consideration many, many gamers would view a 24 hour rental as a 'gaming marathon' and put 16-24 hours into a game during that rental period. That's a ton more server stress than a 24 hour movie rental.

I believe they view the 4 hour rental as a 'sample the game' rental , or 'play while your friends are over' rental, but with flex time it would become a new animal, a 'beat-half-the-game-at-your-leisure' rental.

Not to mention, while we could conceivably have 4 hours flex, that would make no sense at the weekly/monthly level. So now different tiers would mean different things, which is a really, really bad idea due to customer confusion.

And that would lead us to no weekly/monthly rental periods, but rather different amounts of flex time. But that's confusing too, since 8 hours of Uncharted = beat, but 8 hours of FFTactics = not much. So we're back to weekly/monthly rentals.

It's not an easy nut to crack.

I honestly don't mind the PS Now talk. The less confusion, the better. But just to break up the monotony...DRAGONS CROWN tomorrow.

dont see why people so happy about Dragon crown. Yea its a good 10 hour game but then gets boring as hell has you have to replay the same maps hoping to get the rune stone drops. Hopefully

I was trying to find out why you were arguing that 24>4 like that is something that needed to be pointed out as a key point of contention. I even specifically asked why you were so focused on the four hour option when that's not what you'd pick if you wanted to beat most games out there and you ignored it to continue talking more about the four hour option.

Movies don't need other options, but games do to fit various types of games/lifestyles.

Yeah. Last time I rented a game from Blockbuster was back in the PS2 days and I recall $5-8 weekly rentals back then. I think the 90 day prices and 4 hour prices are a joke for a lot of these games, but they could just be there to make the other 2 options look more appealing. I can't see many situations where I would choose 4 hours or 90 days anyway.

Only 10h of fun for free! PS+ is going straight down the toilet you guys!
Slidecage is actually right about this. In games that have online communities, PS+ can make them worse by introducing a flood of people who don't know how to play the game. Since they got the game free, they have no incentive to learn it. Here are some of the things that will happen with newcomers coming into Dragon's Crown:

-No one is going to wait around for someone to click the runestones for party buffs

-People will do things detrimental to the party, e.g. bash open barrels that spread fire across the room, fly magic carpet/ship into lava/whirlpools

-No one will know how to fight the bosses for alternate paths

Luckily, this game is just a beat-em-up and really easy on its default setting, but if you're talking about a game like Binary Domain or Payday 2, it can be annoying when people are running around like headless chickens. These people won't play the game again citing that it's not fun because they never learned how to play.

Toukiden would be received very well if added to the Vita lineup as it's a good game and it's in a Souls Sacrifice kind of situation where a new, expanded version will be released, so the publisher and Sony would benefit by offering a good, old version of a game.

I somehow got sucked into playing Doki Doki.  I was just going to boot it up, try it, and delete it... but now I'm on like world 5 or something.

It's one of the odder games i've ever played, but it's sort of additively sweet.    You go to other planets and try to solve problems.  You can 'summon' all sorts of things (a cake, a killer robot, etc) and collect more summonable things by talking to people, puzzles, etc.   Giving people stuff they like makes them like you, and then they give you more stuff.   There's some light puzzling in there as you try to sort out what they want, etc.   Oh yeah, and there's also personality quizzes and such mixed in.

I should absolutely hate this game.  But I don't.  Something about summoning a living saki creature for a sumo wrestler and watching him chase it around, or giving a mean character a pile of poop that chases them around, just works.  Go figure.

Just be careful about flinging people around and bashing their heads in to the ground. Some of them apparently don't like that and then they won't talk to you.

it actually hasnt given me much value as of late. They missed an opportunity to discount Rogue Legacy. Starting to think they bumped it up to a seeimgingly-random $17 only because there's the PLAY promotion. Kinda makes the promo moot.

It was on sale for $13.59 for pre-orders starting the week before launch, so you missed the deal.

So I totally missed the news that we're getting both Vita AND PS3 versions of Dragon's Crown, but thanks to an email from Atlus, I just found that out.

I'm looking forward to trying it out on the big screen with multiplayer (already have the Vita version).

There's a big banner when you go to the front page of the PS4's PS Store about the Play 2014 Promotion with "20% Off Pre-Orders" in big, yellow font at the bottom. It's not that hard to find.

It is actually kinda insidious if you think about it. You don't just have to charm people to progress in the game, you have to figure out what will break them so that they will give you something in order to leave them alone. Some give you gifts for treating them well, but others only give gifts if you treat them REALLY badly. Half the quizzes and a 1/4th of the planets are behind a DLC pay wall FYI. I was also kinda disappointed that the personality quiz didn't tie much at all in with the rest of the gameplay, its mainly just a way to pad the game time.

Basically its scribblenauts which uses summonables instead of words.

I platinumed the game on PS3 and don't remember hoping for any specific drops. Is there some Vita-specific trophy you're referring to, or are you just blowing up a tiny element of the game out of proportion to its importance?

What if PS1, PS2, and some older PS3 games had trophies added with the PS Now service, and the trophy support was only on PS Now. Are you going to use PS Now now?

Only thing I can think of is if you picked Path A, you didn't get one of the 9 stones. Just pick Path B, 100% drop unless you let the boss escape/you run away.

if i remember correctly (been awhile since i played it) you play the normal story mode what takes around 10 hours, then you can replay the maps hoping a rune stone drops and fighting a 2nd boss. I played one map like 7 times and never got the rune to drop (unless i was doing it wrong - what would not shock me LOL)

You buy runes from Lucain. I searched a FAQ for rune drop and found nothing.

You were doing it wrong. Don't run away from the Red Dragon, fight in treasure room. Kill the floating undead wraith using torches to light the statues before you run out of room to back up. Kill the Kraken before it floods. Kill the Chimera before you fall too many floors, etc.

The talismens you need are a 100% drop from killing a boss on Path B. You need all 9 to enter the last level and beat the game.
