Never played a FF or Chrono game. I know VII is like the holy grail. Any recommendations between the two series?
VII's an alright game, but a lot of its appeal is grounded in nostalgia. It's fondly remembered since it was the first FF experience for a lot of PS1 players. VI, VIII and IX are all better in pretty much ever respect -- mechanics, setting, presentation.

I liked Sleeping Dogs, although I suppose it's telling that I haven't gone back to it in months. It's very similar to the first True Crime game (in fact, it was a True Crime reboot until Activision pulled the plug), and as such the combat is much better than it is in Grand Theft Auto. The graphics are fantastic, with rain-slicked roads and tons of detail in certain areas.

O man. Should I jump on FFX/X2? I much rather have the a physical copy, but this has been the lowest I've seen it on Vita. My backlog is pretty huge too....

sleeping dogs definitive edition was confirmed today by a amazon listing !!! i loved the game so much and i would for sure buy it again with the dlc that i didnt play. ill wait for it to tank in price like tomb raider lol

What? No. My first FF game was FF8, and I still don't think 8 is better than 7.

FF8 has a lot of problems. While I love junctions, it hinders using magic. Your stats go down when you cast, due to the junctions. The story is horrible by disc 3. Revolver gun to space? No.

Forgetting things because of junctions? So what part of their journey do they remember by the end, considering how much junctioning they used during the game? They forgot about each other and Edea with less GF use before the game started. No one even had GFs when they joined the party. I think Selphie's the only one that found a GF as a kid.

The central villain throughout the majority of the game isn't your enemy at all? Who even cared about Ultimecia and Adel after Edea was freed?

And a weak-ass useless female lead.

FF4 and FF6 are probably better than FF7 though.

ff6 had the best main antagonist imo. kefka was insane lmao. as for ff 7 i think zack in crisis core is a much more likable main character than cloud in 7

Does anyone here like Sleeping Dogs? Looks like it could be coming to PS4. I just remember Frisky always saying what a shitty game it was.
This was easily my favorite open world game of 2013. Great game and OK story DLC though I stopped playing those. Great fighting, it's easy to move around, just a great overall game. Highly recommended and I can't wait for the sequel.

I played it back it at launch and REALLY enjoyed it so much so that I got the platinum and had fun doing it. I really like the fact that combat is all about melee (you rarely use guns) which gives it this very cinematic karate type vibe. The combat system's gameplay is pretty much a straight rip off from the Arkham games but that's a very good thing and you can interact with objects around you during the fights. It's pretty awesome.

I will happily play it again and highly recommend it.

EDIT: Added some more details.

This is a dumb question, but is there any way to pay a remaining balance on your PS Wallet, rather than adding funds in $5-10 increments? I have $1.10 currently and would like to pay the remaining 3.89, rather than adding money and still having $1.10 remaining. I know this is possible in the Nintendo eshop, but I haven't seen a way to do it for Playstation Wallet. Is there anything that I might be missing?

As far as I know..... no. It's stupid.

OCD bitch slapped me and made me buy FF 3 and 4.

Now the first panel on my Vita consists of FF Origins through X-2.  The panel had just the right number of icon spaces to make room for ever game in the series up to X-2.

It is beautiful despite the fact that I will probably never play them (as per CAG rules).

FFVII is my favorite of the mainline series that I've played. The materia system is still one of the smartest and concisest RPG mechanics I've ever encountered. Piecing together the fractured story was fun. Figuring out how to do the side-quests was fun (remember when it was released the closest thing to a FAQ was Usenet groups where people shared their strategies and findings).

Can't understand why people think FFIV is any good. What a boring walk through the park.

I tried to like FFVI, but I got really sick of it as it kept separating the party and then the insane random encounter rate made it impossible to keep track of where the fuck I was supposed to go. I didn't care enough to consult a guide so just quit forever.

FFVIII's characters seemed so bland I couldn't even put half an hour into it. And I often hear a primary defense of the game being "but Triple Triad!". If one of the few ways a game is considered fun is a side mechanic, then 1) the game is not fun, and 2) nerds.

FFIX had weird chibi furry characters in 3-D, ugh no thanks. I imagine the fanboys love it because it's a fan-service "throwback" to the boring pre-PS1 FFs. And what a total fuck-you last boss battle to suckers who thought they were playing because story. I remember my college roomate playing it and just laughing at how pissed off he got about that.

FFX is linear as hell with horrible characters (save Auron, who was badass but woefully underutilized) and a dumb story. People who criticize FFXIII's linearity but hold FFX up to be great are the biggest pots that ever called kettles black.

Must be an age difference as someone who grew up playing all the original FF to the latest ones, I think 7 was pretty sad. There are so many issues with the story as well as the combat system. Granted its not the worst but I just never understand this whole 7 was the best out of all the FF games. Personally I always had a soft spot for either FF IV or VI.

I can see someone growing up on old FFs liking them. After all, their brains weren't fully developed yet so the simplistic storyline of an FFIV or the wow factor of so many characters and mecha too! of FFVI would be appealing. What do you consider an "issue" with FFVII's story or combat system? That you couldn't understand the full story without doing side-quests because it wasn't all handed to you on a silver platter? That chaining materia together for massive damage was too much like thinking?

I (tried) playing FFVI in college and played FFIV in grad school, and both of them do not hold up. In contrast, I played the hell out of Chrono Trigger in college and even as an old SNES game it is worlds better than either of those SNES FFs.

My favorite FF was the first one and, yes, a lot of it has to do with nostalgia.

I remember reading the issue of Nintendo Power that explained in detail the first hour or two of the game.  I had never played a role playing game and was enthralled with what I was reading.  So I saved up my money, bought it, and then proceed to blow an entire summer playing it.

Then some of my friends and I would have contests where we would all start the game on the same day and then race to see who could speed run and beat it first.

I've played it so many times but still haven't tired of it.

FF7 storyline was a huge mess. The game needed more time for development, it was delayed it twice and they wanted to delay it again but it was forced to come out as it was thats why the 4th disc is pretty much the last fight. Aeris was suppose to have come back at the end, no way to speed up the summon spells, the plot made no sense what so ever, as for cloud how can you even connect to such an emo flat character. I get it, it probably was your first RPG and the idea that it was 4 disc game can be overwhelming for a child.

So not reversing a plot death that many consider an epic story point makes it a huge mess? Yeah, I can totally see how someone who thinks cheesy bland storylines that have to neatly wrap up like FFIV would think that were an "issue." And it's so much of a mess that the scenario writer became one of the most sought after and touted in video games... I still think it was too complicated for people accustomed to be spoonfed.

I get it, FFIV was your first RPG and the idea that you could be a bad guy but then a good guy with cool armor can be overwhelming for a child.

[Edit] Also that thing about the 4th discs is B.S. considering the original game came out on 3, and the PC version had 3 plus an install disc.

No, minimum additional funding is $5. They do this because of fees charged them by the credit card company. Each transaction has a fixed amount cost per transaction and then they also take a % of the transaction. So each time someone would add a tiny amount of credit to their wallet a larger % of that is getting eaten up by the fixed cost fee. So, for instance, when those PS3 games were $1 each during the sale if you bought them 1 at a time and your wallet was empty at the time Sony would make almost nothing (or possibly lose money) on that transaction. If there wasn't a minimum addition to the wallet you probably would not see many items on the store below $4-5.

The PS1 version of Chrono Trigger is shit (bad loading times which happen very regularly), if you can't pay out the nose for the original cart then buy the DS version or even the iphone / android version before buying that horrible PS1 version.

Actually my first RPG was the Ultima games, my first console RPG was FF1 which I still own. I get it you like simple emo style RPGs with bland character plots. To each is own, but there is plenty of articles out there that document that Aeris was suppose to have come back at the end and the only reason was there wasn't enough time to fully complete the story which FF advent children was suppose to help tie up lose ends it left wide open and gave the cast a nice happy ending.

Didn't IV kill off more NPC's than VII? Your reasoning doesn't make much sense here. It's not like the "epic death" you're talking about was the first time that sort of thing had ever happened, but I suppose if it was the first one you'd encountered, it might mean more. All VII did was reuse plot points from earlier games, without bothering to carry over much in the way of actual personalities (unless eye roll worthy stereotypes qualifies as good characterization).

In other words you believe in random crap people make up instead of the creators. Kind of like that ghost fourth disc you made up, huh?

From the original release of the game, rumors have circulated that Aerith can be resurrected in or that the original plan was to have her come back, but this was scrapped in development. Nomura has categorically stated that neither of these rumors were ever true; "the world was expecting us to bring her back to life, as this is the classic convention." A lengthy petition asking for Aerith's revival by Japanese players was sent to Kitase, but he dismissed it, pointing out that "there are many meanings in Aerith's death and [her revival] could never happen."

And for all the slamming that people with SNES-nostalgia-colored glasses do on FFVII, they never really explain what makes FFIV or FFVI better. It's just hatin' on a popular game for being more popular than the ones you like because it makes you feel more elite.

Metrico is a crazy puzzle platformer that I'm enjoying a lot. It uses infographic-style artwork for its levels and bases it's puzzles on various control options that the Vita offers. It starts off with basic stuff like parts of a level that rise or lower every time you jump or move, so you have to figure out how to manipulate the levels according to the rules that you learn to beat them. Later on, they add wrinkles like a shooting mechanic based on the front and rear touch pads and where I'm at, I've got platforms moving in/out/up/down based on the gyroscope and accelerometer, so I had a level where I was twirling the Vita around to keep a platform stretched out across a chasm so my guy could get across. It's really fun to figure out what new rules are added with each new section and how they mix that with everything I've previously learned to make for some cool puzzles to solve.

Did you even play FFVII bro? Aeris/Aerith was a playable character, not a NPC. And it's not like an "epic death" would be considered one of the greatest cinematic scenes in video games when it's sooo comparable to other deaths. Oh wait nope. And I'm not even one of the people who cared that much for Aeris, but there's downplaying, and then there's what you're doing about her death, which I'm not even sure the English language has a word to describe.

Wikipedia is not a trusted news source, anyone can go in an change things around.

Example, I made a bet with friends that Nell Carter was in Different Strokes they didnt believe me so i told them to check Wikipediaa and there it was Nell Carter was in a number of episodes and I won the bet. What they didnt know was I went in earlier and changed her profile to say that she was in the show. Wikipedia is not a trusted source. As for the guys I bet they found out I made the change I still kept the money because if they where that dumb to believe just that site for everything they didnt deserve the money back, they agreed.

Anyway, last post on FFVII. I can see that arguing about it is like arguing rap music to a bunch of old guys. "It's all about gangsters and prostitutes and you only like it if you like stereotypical gangbangers! Back in my day we had real music! These hippity hop songs are all imitations of that real music, since all they are are made up of samples of 'em!"

And your trusted source is...? Weak. You got caught making crap up and believing the crap made up by Internet rumors as well, just admit it.

Eh, I don't know about that. All of those articles just cite highly circumstantial points, all of which can easily be refuted. It's a bit of a similar situation as the Rinoa = Ultimecia theory. Sure, there's a ton of signs that may point to it (and also which can be refuted), but in the end, it's not how it was. It's simply things that die-hard fans will love to argue about till their faces turn blue.

The only way these theories can be solidified is if someone from Square (mainly Nomura) came out and said it was so.

Are the Persona games worth it at $5 a pop? Would probably end up on my backlog unless they're "OMG play them now!" worthy.
I played Persona 3 Portable a couple of years back and loved it so much that I played through it again immediately even after spending a good hundred hours on the campaign and extra stuff. It's my favorite JRPG since the SNES days. The characters, writing and voice work are particularly good. The combat is a little more difficult than most RPGs I've played. The music is catchy as hell, and I don't even like J-Pop (although maybe that means that I do?). I even ended up really loving the "go to school everyday and date girls/boys and hang out with friends/clubs and then kill demons at night/sleep" rhythm of the game, even though I thought I would end up dreading it. I thought I was done with anime-style things forever before I fired the game up, and after playing the game I've been a bit more open to games with that art style. The story is just ok, and the main dungeon is just a series of auto-generated hallways. Still, P3P is worth way more than $5, but if you're anything like me after putting a few hours into 3 you'll just end up buying the rest of the series in hopes that you'll find another free 40-100 hours in your life.

I thought I was speaking to an adult but its pretty obvious you're still a child so there really is no sense in debating you.

Active Time Battle system already was already used in Final Fantasy 4-6, only change that was made is the length of summon spells. Bahamut summon was nice the first time but everytime over and over again zzzzzzzz.

Save points and random battles were a chore, couple times you would go about 1 hour before next save and lets not forget if you had to face off against a boss.

Materia system attempts to hide the lack of progression in a workable but overused battle system, Final Fantasy 7 shows a even bigger problem the story sucks and the characters are terrible.

Cloud has amnesia and he's boring, he lives in a technologically advanced world. Upon leaving this future city, the world looks like a generic FF country.

As mentioned all the characters are just stereotypical clichés, who you come to despise. My only compliment about the game is for its time, it looked great. But you can say the same about the Transformers movie today.

This Twitch news is disappointing to see actually happen after everybody speculated what would happen with the Youtube buyout. They're no longer going to store saved broadcasts permanently and they're implementing content ID tech to auto-mute past and future videos if copyrighted stuff is in them.

this is worse than it seems I feel. It was enjoyable listening to twitch channels that allowed you to "choose" the music (a good sense of community). Also, most games technically have copyrighted music in them...

That's a ridiculous argument, but I'll change my statement to "party member" so that you're happy. My point still stands. Previous Final Fantasy games killed off "playable characters" as well. I wasn't downplaying her death anyway. I merely stated that it had been done before in other games in the series. The fact that everything about FFVII is overblown doesn't change that reality. It even happened in IV.

Dumb fan theories are the best part of FF games, or even most games in general. Like the indoctrination theory :whee:
