Anyone else just not a fan of the GTA series?

For me personally I just don't like playing as a villan. I don't mind if its not super realistic but in a game like GTA it just doesn't feel right. Just a gaming pet peeve of mine I guess.
I'm not a fan, I don't like the game series. I don't think it's fun. I do however like Saint's Row games and enjoyed the hell out of sleeping dogs. GTA on the other hand, just can't stand it.

Quick question; is there a certain day when it's best to join/re-up on PS+? I have a free month waiting to be used, and I'm wondering if it's anything like XBL Gold; last month I re-upped a month on Gold on the 28th and they bumped my expiration to October 1st, so essentially a couple days extra.
Probably a Monday since it's just 30 days and then you can claim two extra weeks of free games to your account.

In case anyone was wondering, puppeteer is all around awesome.
It looks amazing, was probably going to use one of my B2G1 free coupons at BBY on that and the Vita version of Rayman if I can find something else that's $40.

exactly what I did, added Killzone for kicks and have so far spent the most time with it even though I'm sure I'll like it the least.

I think the only thing you can't kill is the horse. Lizards, hawks, and colossi can all be killed. Now you can play the game. If you still don't want to play SotC, then you're a disgusting horse murderer.
huh? no, you're misreading. i'm saying -- i can not allow myself to kill the colossi in SoTC. I know the game lets you. I know that's the gameplay. But I can't. It feels awful killing those magnificent creatures, many of which seem absolutely harmless. I can't play the game.

That's kinda the whole point, and one of many things that make it so brilliant

I don't like playing the villain either, but that's because I'm a professional criminal and like to play my games for escapism.

Agreed. SoTC betrays your sense of rightneousness and calls into question the protagonist's motivations and does so with minimal setup and dialogue... All emotions are conveyed visually and through the use of it's brillant soundtrack. A true classic that transcends games.

If you listen to the CAGCast, this is an opinion Wombat has expressed a few times about having trouble getting into GTA.

Has anyone been able to confirm that 64gb vita cards from JP work in US vitas? Did some cursory Google hunting with no clear answer from a reliable source. Importing costs don't seem way out of whack considering I can still get $70 for my 32gb.

I don't see why they wouldn't, the Vita's not region locked but I also haven't seen anything on it either way.

The main reason I hesitated is that playasia specifically lists them as US or JP - there might just be a firmware difference to support it or something, but don't want to get caught with my pants down so to speak.

yes, i agree. but i'm not going to do it just to satisfy the game.

sort of like people that play hotline miami and then complain about the violence. they chose to play. so, i choose not to kill the magnificent creatures.

i mean, part of the brilliance, of, say, Spec Ops: The Line is that you keep playing. You keep doing things even once you know how fucked up everything is. You're forced into making some dire decisions, yet you still make them. You still kill, kill, kill. And the game knows that, and it's part of the game.

SotC is sort of the same way, from what I understand... but in that case, I opted out. I couldn't do it, I couldn't kill those creatures.

And I'm glad I didn't. No game is worth what it would have meant to make that compromise to my 'gut'.

SotC was alright. Not the masterpiece everyone built it up to be. I really didn't like Ico though. I liked the story of SotC, but the controls were so distracting lay difficult that it ruined my experience. I rage quit on the game so many times. More than any other game.

Morality debates over virtual creatures?

I wonder if Cabela's Big Game Hunter players go through this nonsense.
I think affa can debate any subject. You could say something like "Every human has a brain" and he'd find a way to explain what makes that incorrect. He'd keep it behind spoiler tags though, because he's classy.

:grouphug:

Oh wait, affa is being serious? Man, you're one of the weirdest gamers I know.
Well at least we know there are weirder ones :booty:

You take that back you monster.
Portal is awesome. Just sayin' ^_~

I suppose I could understand that. I for one couldn't keep playing the aforementioned Hotline Miami, it just made me feel like a horrible person (which is exactly what it wants to do). I still think SotC is something everyone needs to play, but it's your choice, and if it makes you uncomfortable to such a degree as to be unplayable, well that's unfortunate but at least I can understand where your coming from.

I was expecting you to link to slidecage's profile.

Glad someone picked that up.

Am I the only one that can shoot a puppy in the face in a video game and not feel anything?  Maybe it's cause I realize I'm playing a video game and not actually shooting a puppy in the face.

Oh wait, affa is being serious? Man, you're one of the weirdest gamers I know.
sure am. i mean, yes, i basically was like 'wow, this is the most majestic creature ever'... wait... i'm supposed to kill this thing? ugh. ok. and then the next one, i said screw this, i feel awful, i'm out.

i'm not alone in this, i actually googled it after quitting the game and found articles written by others who felt the same way.

i don't like hunting in general, virtual or otherwise. animals are my friends, and i'm not de-sensitized to killing virtual ones.

Well at least we know there are weirder ones :booty:

on the other hand, i plat'd Hotline with no problem. Virtual people don't faze me. Though my wife got upset once in some game where enemies drop their weapons and hold their hands up, and i said something like 'fuck off' and shot him between the eyes. my wife thought that was horrific. didn't phase me.

just don't ask me to kill innocent creatures, virtual or otherwise.

the difference is i know both are virtual. so killing virtual 'people' is meaningless, but i'd rather just look at something like a boss in SotC and not kill it.

Decided to follow Jay Moneys lead a bit and while at Best Buy with credit to burn decided not to grab a 1 year PS+ card. I find that with + I keep putting games that I really want to play on the backburner. (How long have I been sitting on this physical copy of Virtue's Last Reward?) No PS+ now, time to get through The Last of Us and get ready for GTA V. I have a 3 month card to use if at any point in the near future there's a game I absolutely must have (but somehow haven't bought already) that's expiring that week.

Who knows, maybe a good deal will pop up Black Friday now that PS+ will be mandatory for PS4 online play. But for now I'll save the $40. (But in reality I'll end up buying one of those board games I've had my eye on for a while. Board game backlog, here I come.)

Man what with all these feelings while playing video games. I don't care about killing anything human or otherwise in a game. The more shit gets blown up and things that get killed the better!

You lost me here. That reminds me of PETA's bullshit.
well, i mean everything that happens in video games isn't real. same with film and television.

yet we all draw our lines somewhere - just look at all the hoopla about, say, Dragon's Crowns visuals or Hotline Miami violence or this or that 'murder simulator' or the lastest Saw or Hostel movie. there's all sorts of things 'off the table' in video games -- old school rpgs often let you kill every npc in the game, now all of them make it impossible to kill kids (i only know about this because it's a common topic on rpg forums). there's all sorts of horrific acts (the vast majority of) people wouldn't want to do in a video game.

I just know where I draw my lines, that's all. for me, it's one thing to kill a bunch of virtual humanoids trying to kill me in a game called 'kill zone'. it's altogether another to kill a virtual bunny rabbit that's just eating virtual carrots.

it's not an issue of 'morality'. it's all fake and virtual. i don't really care what's out there if it's fake, i know the difference. but it's a matter of not liking how something makes me feel. games are for fun, if it makes me feel awful (like killing those colossi), then what's the point? i find no enjoyment in killing innocent creatures, and i find no enjoyment in simulating killing innocent creatures.

but it's all a matter of context. i don't mind eating to survive in tokyo jungle. it's game dependent. i'm sure almost everyone has a line they woudn't cross in a game. and heck, some games are about drawing those lines... SotC and Spec Ops:The Line, for example.

PS - - Peta's 'bullshit' is intentionally over the top - that's how you get media attention, and the 'over the top' message has other, smaller, more palatable messages buried in it. some stick, some don't. but don't for a second think that over the top message is their actual message - that's just the vehicle. They're playing the long game, and don't mind being ridiculed or vilified to get certain messages out, discussed, and talked about. Throwing blood on fur was certainly over the top... but over the course of a decade it sure did change the conversation and the industry.

I was going to say, if SoTC tears you up then stay FAR away from Spec-Ops: the Line, LOL.

If you stop to think about it, a game like Pokemon is pretty horrifying as well, capture wild animals and force them to battle against each other till one of them is beaten senseless by the other.

This discussion reminds me of this short flash game, Hero's Adventure

so then, it's exactly like peta bullshit- Animal Life > Human Life.

Jay_remedy was spot on.

Also this debate is absolutely pointless...

Yep, a bunny eating a carrot is innocent but pedestrians in GTA are fair game. He finds no enjoyment in killing creatures (in SotC's case, completely fictional creatures) but enjoys running down people in his car. Riiight, that's not fucked up at all.

I'm thinking probably 8s from both Polygon and Gamespot (both act like "hipster" sites who like to go against the grain, Polygon seems worse though) and near universal praise from everywhere else. The only thing worse than the pre-release GTA V circlejerk is going to be the post-release GTA V circlejerk.
The nerd rage over the inevitable high scores is going to be amazing :bouncy: both the hardcore and japanophile gamers alike will be in full freak out mode, what with them not having any amazing games to be occupied with around the time of the GTA V's release so they'll be the only one's online at game sites crying over the review scores without actually having played the game themselves.

Also speaking of over scoring games and Gamespot/Polygon, I think those two sites managed to be the only ones not swept up in the over hyping of TLOU. Gamespot's 8.5 seems generous to me now after having played that game. Talk about let downs.

I don't know if he ever said he did that. I know that I'd play gta with my friends and they'd go on killing sprees it made me feel uncomfortable. It doesn't even look fun...just power complexy.

So does killing any animal, (unless it's actively trying to kill me of course...or my health bar says I need to eat to survive).

Like he mentioned, everyone has their line. Just because it's not yours doesn't make his stance any less relevant, just as his idea doesn't make yours less relevant.

Moral of the story, lets all just get along.

i can not kill creatures in Shadow of the Colossus, meaning the game is effectively unplayable for me.

GTA? Yea, I can run over people.

I have never been able to understand the placing of non human creatures on pedestals above people. I like and care about animals as much as the next guy ( well maybe not as much as the next guy if the next guy is affa) but if it was a save the bunny or save the guy, I would always save the guy... Even if it was save this giant pile of adorable puppies or save this one guy who hates your guts, I would still save the guy who hated my guts.  i Just don't get anything less than that.

Definitely not getting sucked into this squabble, but that's weird as hell! Your heart aches for...the Colossi? They don't even remotely represent anything real. It's like sympathizing with the muppets from Sesame Street.

it's all fake. not real. fake. 1s and 0s.

most gamers, if genre sales are worth a damn, love shooting fake people in the head. headshots by the millions. but because i admit i don't like killing fake harmless animals in games i'm the one that's fucked up?

and for the record, i don't 'enjoy running down people' in GTA. However, I do recognize that doing so leads to police chases, and that police chases are fun... and they in turn lead to tanks, which are even more fun. Is it 'fucked up' that senseless violence leads to fun in GTA? perhaps. But it is what it is, and it's all fake anyway. But that doesn't mean i have enjoy killing an innocent creature in another game.

who said anything about my 'heart aching'. I simply stated that i thought the colossi were beautiful and majestic, and did absolutely nothing aggressive towards my character. killing them for no reason would have just felt wrong to me.

it makes me so happy that mentioning this here gets me called 'fucked up' and other terms.

i'm out. later guys, it's been real. i might be back, but seriously? i'm rather disgusted at the way some of you are acting over me mentioning off-handedly that i thought the developers of SotC did such a good job with their creatures that i didn't want to destroy them, especially since they were peaceful.
