I would think you can use a usb hub. I know on PS4 they had one that was made for it.

We shouldn't have to buy an ugly hub to get the correct number of ports.

Don't make accessories that I have to but accessories to use.

I'm not even sure what to look up but it looks like a USB port to install into some hardware costs $2.60.

Sony could spend 10 bucks and give us 4

Cool, another Toys to Life fan. You'll be happy to know that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Skylanders, Disney Infinity, LEGO Dimensions, and StarLink should all work (hypothetically) if the PS5 Disc Version and the Xbox Series X truly have full backwards compatibility.

Those don't work for external hard drives. I know I have one I bought recently and it says it on a little paper cardboard piece that comes in the box yet not even on the box or instructions or anything itself. Had I known I wouldn't have bought it since that was the whole point. You also have to remove it to change discs. I wish I had bothered to look at the q/a section on the items page on best buy first.

Now that I look at it the one I linked is for the slim and Pro not the OG PS4. Pro has 2 USB on the front and 1 on the back, I have my Gold headset in front and external 8tb drive plugged in the back. The pics on the best buy link show on the Pro it doesn't block the cd slot and it would give you 4 usb in front and 1 in the back to use for the external drive.

Game file size will be smaller on the PS5 for the exactly same assets for two reasons. Firstly, PS4 uses Zlib for on-drive compression whereas PS5 uses Kraken, and Kraken is at least 10% better. The second requires a little story...

Back when Bloodborne first launched, the load times were atrocious. They got a patch out pretty quickly that improved things, but if I recall it was a multi-GB download. I was very confused at the time, it's kinda counterintuitive that load times could be improved by making the overall file size of the game larger. Bigger game means more stuff to load, right? Generally, yes, universally, no.

Games that run on a Hard Drive need to load as few data chunks as possible, because the seek time (how long it takes to find a particular chunk of data) is so long that it adds heavily to load times. So one way to optimize load times is to make the chunks bigger by over-including necessarily files and thereby making all of the chunks bigger, but allowing you to load fewer of them when playing. I can give an example.

Let's say the "weapons" file has all of the data for the hunter's weapons in Bloodborne and the level design is split across "levela" through "leveld." You can make the game load a lot faster by adding "weapons" to "levela", "levelb", "levelc", and "leveld" because the hard drive only has to find 1 chunk, not two when loading if you do. However, that causes the data of "weapons" to be present in four locations instead of just one, thus this data redundancy decreases load time but increases overall file size.

Thankfully, SSDs don't have this issue, but sadly that doesn't mean that games will necessarily be smaller on the PS5 unless devs actually deliver PS5 versions that are designed for an SSD. In other words, our old PS4 games probably won't be much smaller despite being able to run ons PS5, and you'll probably also encounter other devs that still use harddrive centric design on PS5 projects either out of laziness or to avoid the cost of tailoring their ports for small gain.

Now it's true, better assets generally means larger files, but even that is not universally accurate. As more graphical effects become simulated instead of "pre-baked" due to features like ray tracing, some assets could actually get smaller in size as well. Consider the way Dreams transmits and stores its assets; it sends the instructions of how things were created instead of the actual creations (which strangely takes up less space!).

None of this is to say that 825 GB is a copious amount of storage, but I understand why they did it. The cheapest SSD I found that is likely to be compatible with the PS5 was like, $80 for 500 GB. At least this generation has me prepared to suffer the storage crunch; I've been living with 500 GB for seven years now on my launch destiny PS4 and my PC only had like, ~750ish between its two SSDs.

 
Yeah I highly doubt game sizes will be smaller on the ps5 even with compression and other stuff simply because games keep increasing in size.

You can't remove and upgrade the main internal drive, but it'll have a slot for a second internal drive provided that the speed and such meets the minimum reqs for what works best with the PS5.

 
 
Hmm....so the PS5's included SSD is supposed to be specially married to the PS5 allowing even better access and tricks.

So I fill that up with some games and then I put some more games on the expansion SSD (which is supported but not special).

The new games were specifically designed to really benefit from the extra boost but they're on the wrong drive.

How is this a good thing?

 
The PS5's SSD isn't really special. The special part is the hardware controller that interacts with the SSD and the way the whole console is designed from the ground up for SSDs instead of HDDs. Harddrives are a really awful technology that fundamentally changes game development. AFAIK their SSD is just a generic high speed Gen 3 PCIE4 NVME SSD.

In fact, even the estimates of their SSD's read speed (5.5 GB/s) is probably measured under very ideal, misleading situations.

Games will continue to get bigger and bigger because devs don't care about compressing things to fit on physical media anymore. The new consoles with 4K drives and optional 100gb discs isn't going to help that.

 
Hoping they announce a pre-order date on Wednesday. Would rather just get it in and forget about it until the 20th. Also hoping for definitive launch lineups for both consoles. If there’s nothing exceptional at launch, may just wait on both.
 
I'm going to be honest. Everything I'm seeing about the PS5 is telling me I'm going to be perfectly happy with my PS4 Pro for a good deal longer.

Really? If anyone knows the answer please share but I read that Sony spent the last 7-10 years researching and developing their SSD or something crazy like that. If not then how can Sony justify selling their console for the same amount as a Series X which has a larger SSD and faster CPU.

Where did you read it's an SSD they've been developing for 7-10 years? Sony? Is there any independent testing?

We probably won't see games only made for the Series X and the PS5 until late 2021/early 2022. And, with backwards compatibility being a huge mystery on PS5, I may have to keep my PS4 Pro plugged in anyway to play all of those games that I bought, but haven't had the time to play yet.

Sorry! This was a mistake. Though we don't know for sure that a Gen 4 drive is required, they probably are. The Series S uses one.

During the PS5 hardware talk Cerny gave this year, he admits that there are faster/better SSDs on the market right now than the PS5's, but says that there weren't last year when he gave that wired interview. The wired interview made the PS5 SSD sound like some kind of incredible Sony-developed technology, but of course it isn't. They didn't invent it or do anything that other companies cannot. It's just marketing. Your PC can have the same SSD tech in it today. The difference comes in at the software engineering level.

Because next-gen platforms are all SSD based, the software designed for them can expect data to be streamed from storage much quicker. This allows for all sorts of new and exciting programming tricks which will ultimately enable developers to create games with fewer limitations holding back their creativity. While it probably won't have much of an impact on simple 2D games, you can expect more populated, complicated game worlds, fewer choke points for loading creating samey feelings like in The Last of Us (such as the ever popular moving of a fallen support to squeeze through a tight area), and improved performance with advanced line of sight-based loading. This advantage will benefit Xbox X/S and PS5 equally, so yeah all the talk of the SSD on Sony's behalf vs Microsoft's relative silence on the topic can be chalked up to marketing decisions. Microsoft mostly wants to push Game Pass!

TLDR: Game design benefits immensely from high speed SSDs. Both consoles have 'em. And without a doubt, the PS5 is definitely cheaper to manufacture than the Series X.

Where did you hear that it can't? From the leak videos posted last night, the Series S is stronger than the 1 X or equal to it in virtually every way.

Exactly. It basically means it will enhance them in it's own way.

Yeah... The Series S's slightly lower RAM shouldn't effect it because it doesn't put things out in 4K; it'll just enhance them to 1440P then upscale to 4k for essentially the same effect. Having lower RAM isn't important if you aren't doing 4k and the Series S doesn't do 4k. Period.

Don't buy a Series S if you want native 4k.

I understood it the same exact way you explained it. I've seen multiple posts about the Series S being less capable than the Xbox One X though. No idea where everyone is getting that from.

i read the article, it specifically says they will play the xbox one s version of games with their own upgrades, (hdr, better framerate) the only reason you would do that is because it cant handle the x versions.

Yeah because Xbox One X does 4K. The series S doesn't do 4K so they use the One S versions and enhance them for the Series S. With smart delivery it's not gonna matter anyways. It's a distinction without a point.

If you want 4k enhanced games get the Series X.

It's literally true that the XSS will not run the XBX1X's enhancement mode. It will run another mode that will have better framerates, load times, etc.

The XSS is undeniably better than the XBOX1X unless you want native 4k for some reason.

It runs a mode based off the Xbox S enhancements. As an owner of an 1X and an S, the difference is pretty dramatic.

I’m still not convinced that just because Microsoft says the Series X will have parity with the Series S that there won’t actually be a significant drop off in performance between the two. Maybe not a launch, but give it a year or two and I think the Series X will outshine Series S in the same way an X1 is way better than an S.

Also not convinced the Series S will be any better than an X1 ... and I’ve already had this debate in the X thread.

Well the PS5 is being talked about in the Xbox deals thread. And both the Series S/X (more) and PS5 (less) have been talked about in the Nintendo deals thread. It's all very weird around here sometimes, lol.

I know there are other ways to do it, but I use my PS4 Pro as my media server as well. I probably won't get rid of it until the PS5 has one, even if the PS5 plays all the same games.

So far the only game I really want is Hitman 3 and that's cross gen.

 
I'm sticking with my PS4 Pro and PC until there's enough exclusives to get me to jump. So far it seems like the launch window is light on exclusives so I'll be curious how the launch year line-up shapes up.

Well, I'm currently sitting at $485 in Xbox gift cards that I only spent $414 on due to discounts and Bing searches. That's almost $100 off of the Series X console when you figure in taxes and shipping, and I still have two months to get more gift cards from Bing searches. It seems like most people are getting the Series S, despite it being reported as being less powerful than the Xbox One X. Getting the cheaper version of a console is definitely the Cheap Ass Gamer thing to do. You get all the same games, but slightly shittier looking. And, you save $200.

I'll admit that with refurbished 2080ti's popping up for $550 on the edge of the 30-series release, I'm now a little conflicted myself.

I wish my PC VR headset was as comfortable as the PSVR one. My goodness it's cozy.

That's a pretty extreme interpretation of the sentiment of waiting a little while to see if a discount is available, or if there's some other strong motivating factor to push an early purchase. We are all talking about a console that hasn't even had it's price announced yet after all. Pretty sure this is the definition of early adopter.
 
It's totally speculation that we will even see mid-lifespan upgrades for the PS5 and the Xbox Series S/X, as they have built in expansion ports for things like extra storage space. And, Microsoft has said that sometime in the future, possibly as soon as 2021, Xbox Series X will get an update to run 8K content and games through a software update. I imagine that Sony will do the same thing. Sony has even gone on record saying that this console cycle will only last 5 years for them. Meaning that if a PS6 exists, it will be out in 2025 or 2026. And, Microsoft will probably retaliate with their new console. Nintendo and PC will continue to do their own things. The days of the 7 to 11 year long console cycle are over. If you wait a few years to buy one, the next one will already be ready to come out. And, there's no guarantees that companies will keep doing backwards compatibility out of the goodness of their own hearts. The only reason why we have it this generation is because the Series X and PS5 have such similar architecture compared to their previous consoles.
