Apparently though, the developers of No Man's Sky have been hinting that they might either make a port of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X, or that it will be backwards compatible with both. So, I am hoping that the PS5 and Series X support old saves as well as old games. Because my biggest pet peeve with the Xbox One X is that while my gamer score shows the games that I own on my Xbox 360, and even let's me download a handful of them digitally. I have to start playing them all from the beginning, instead of right where I left off. Hopefully cloud saves will change that.

Great, so the games that everyone has recently played will also be playable on PS5.

I don't need to play the games I've already just played....I've already just played them.

The PS3 could handle PS2 and PS1.

Make the PS5 handle at least PS2 and PS1 (and PS3 with all those teraflops you got)!

I would even accept having to rebuy the games digitally. I want to play some old games that I miss or missed out on.

what he said was that each game had to be tested individually, as many games could have problems in the "constant boost mode" that the ps5 would be running in. he never said that those were the only games that would be compatible, he said those were the ones that had already been tested or are currently being tested and would be good to go at launch. it very well may be that all games are compatible, but havent been tested and will experience problems, much like boost mode on the ps4 pro caused problems in some non pro enabled games.

Other than the backward compatibility issue, I'm mostly concerned about the hard drive.  Despite the fact that it's a very odd number (825gb...?) that's still too damn small of a hard drive that we can't upgrade due to it being a custom form factor.  I've got a 2tb SSD in my PS4 Pro right now and it's still too small to hold all of my games, so 825gb is going to be a headache.

How many PS5 games do we think will fit on the 825gb SSD? Maybe 4 or 5 AAA games? Some of my current PS4 games with all of their DLC are over 100gb.

Games may actually be smaller with the compression and the bite sized patching and they no longer need to duplicate assets, though that might be more a memory management thing than disk size management.

I hope they make an option to completely shut off the light bars on the DS5 controller, to save battery life.

And to control what color they are. It's silly that such an option isn't available when it seems like something simple to do.

m2 is a size or form factor. m2 drives can be either sata or nvme. ps5 will use the latter.

That is absolutely not what was said in the video. Yes, it's an M.2 drive. But specifically, it needs to be an M.2 drive that supports PCIe 4.0 and can do transfer rates >5.5GB/sec. It also has to satisfy certain size requirements that aren't fully standardized. These drives literally don't exist yet for consumers. Something like the upcoming Samsung 980 Pro might qualify, but it's not out yet. This is not an issue right now since the PS5 isn't launching for at least 8 months. Just don't get the idea that you can slap any old M.2 SSD in there and have it work correctly - there's not a single drive available to consumers today that meets the PS5 requirements. When the PS5 does launch, only the newest and fastest (and therefore also the priciest) M.2 drives will qualify.

It will be interesting to see how the price of those M.2 drives will compare to the custom SSD card that Microsoft is using. My bet is initially they will either be similarly priced or that the PS5 drives will be more expensive. But over time once PCIe 4.0 drives become more common, the PS5 drive pricing will fall below that of the MS ones because they aren't using a proprietary form factor.

Most of you couldn't be more wrong when you say Sony will let you use cheaper priced SSDs.... the fact that the those potential SSD drives that Sony would have to get certified, their current and future prices will only increase even more than MSRP once their model numbers get put on a "Sony approved list", causing plenty of sellers and resellers overprice them like crazy... in that case might as well have a proprietary drive like Microsoft's...at least the one from Microsoft will be designed and optimized to work as fast as series X allows it to be without the random brand name and their speeds disparities.

Honestly, I got mine at the Dollar Tree for a $1 each. Maybe the 99 cent store might be 2 for $1? I sometime see that for some candy they sell. I eat candy every so often so I figure, if the dlc is $2 each, might as well get the candy. Originally, was in it for the theme, but I brought 10 bars and ended up getting all the codes.

what he said was that each game had to be tested individually, as many games could have problems in the "constant boost mode" that the ps5 would be running in. he never said that those were the only games that would be compatible, he said those were the ones that had already been tested or are currently being tested and would be good to go at launch. it very well may be that all games are compatible, but havent been tested and will experience problems, much like boost mode on the ps4 pro caused problems in some non pro enabled games.

Is there any way to make this "constant boost mode" optional to ensure 100% backwards compatability? I'm guessing not or they wouldn't have mentioned only the top 100 games. It's concerning that they can't even the top 100 played games compatible by launch how are they ever going to make all 4000 PS4 games back compat? Ya that's not happening! Xbox has been at his back compat game for YEARS and still not all of the past games are back compat. Good luck Sony! This is disappointing.

Call it what you want but the fact is that they did "reveal" the tech specs in one of the most boring ways possible and they hyped this up to the public after MS did their full tech spec and system breakdown. They tried to appease the masses and knew full well that hungry Playstation fans and consumers were going to tune in and it backfired. They could have waited to release this presentation until after the console was revealed because right now say what you want but the messaging to the consumers is pretty bad. All of the devs working on games aleady have devkits and access to this information anyways.

I imagine the discs will be used to authenticate and then run emulated digital copies as they are testing games one by one for compatibility. They may only need "wrapper" around the original content and therefore still pull content off the disc but it's not clear.

You tailor your presentation for your audience. If it's not developers then change the format. It was an absurd idea given the already absurd situation most are in. A bunch of people stuck at home hoping to see an overdue product reveal instead get a powerpoint presentation on memory management best practices. The talk was pretty fascinating to see how much of a big change these new consoles will be to how games have been made for the past 20+ years. Moving to SSD and building your architecture around removing the bottlenecks that limit how much data you can stream in the game as fast as possible (up to 20 times what we has last-gen) is going to remove the need for all of the artificial bullshit that is used to hide loads and shrink what you can see so that the game can load in the next area without you noticing.

If you've played Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and had the game just stop you for a second or two as you head into a new area, that's the game failing to hide that loading of assets and just straight up stopping you so it can get those things in before you get to that area. The Mass Effect elevator? Gone. MGS3's ladder? Gone. Slow walk-and-talk sequences? Gone. Tight corridors your character has to squeeze through? Gone. Kenny, Shaq, and EJ talking about the match-up or whatever random thing they're talking about before you can play your NBA 2K game? Gone. Maybe that five minute loading screen before GTAV will be gone, but who knows. To be specific, that doesn't mean they can't do that stuff, but it'll be for story purposes and not hiding loads because they can stream data in almost as fast as it's needed without a lot of redundancy to make frequently-used data accessible in almost every part of the hard drive disk for any situation you might be in. It literally frees up devs to not have to design levels and areas with arbitrary structures and obstacles to slow down your ability to get around the world and play the content you want. Sports games can presumably load into games in a second or two and not 30 seconds with stat screens or fancy studio shows to mask them. That's ing huge to have that be the standard on most games and that'll trickle down to PC games, as well. It's a fundamental design shift that frees up devs to just work on interesting worlds than be hampered by masking data streaming times, which is great. That said, it doesn't mean a Bethesda or whoever won't be able to make games with load times or some online game having the network speeds slow things down, but most devs will be able to make smarter, more efficient games that save them time and worry.

Games can potential be a bit smaller and more efficient in terms of the file size and structure, which feeds into the stuff Sony and MS have been talking about letting you delete parts of a games install to get rid of audio languages you don't need and textures for resolutions you don't have and even for modes you don't want to play.

The 3D audio stuff is also great, as PSVR people here already know. This more advanced system will allow you to be better immersed into games with headphones so that you can actually hear things going on around you because those audio cues are actually happening in 3D space in a similar way to how ray tracing works. Audio designers will also get a huge boost in what they can do and Dale North's Twitter thread explains it pretty well. They're going to constantly keep working on the profile part of it since everybody's ears are different and that changes how audio works for you, which is pretty cool.

All of the devs currently working on games under NDAs do, but there are thousands more out there that are not privvy to this information and want to know what cool stuff they can use for games on PS5 if or whenever they want to make or port games to it.

Yup. I’ve had to prepare multiple presentations for different audiences on the exact topic. Engineers and computer scientist want the tech side. VPs and C-suite stake holders want none of that shit. Users need things dumbed down to their respective needs.

Sony made a dumb choice. If I was interested in the PS5 before I became less interested after that presentation.

If your PS4 drowns out your speakers maybe you need new speakers. I have my soundbar set to level 13 and can't hear a peep from the Pro.
