The beginning of TLoU was awesome to me but I did stop playing the game. I think I just watched the rest on YouTube. Story was good, I loved the atmosphere.
I just read and saw leaks of TLoU2 and I’m kinda disappointed lol I’m thinking to myself what if I actually played it and discovered stuff by myself, would I be less disappointed lol I dunno. Sure, "they're all quite good" but you started this by proclaiming that the most revered entry in the series is by your standards not up to par with the likes of Rondo of Blood or Super Castlevania IV. Those are great by traditional standards. But the overall greatest, most innovative, and go to Castlevania game for non fans will always be Symphony of the Night.

Actually the most innovative Castlevania title is probably Simon’s Quest, which had many of the same ideas as Symphony ten years earlier; certainly it was executed much more poorly, but that certainly doesn’t stop it from having been the origin of many of SOTN’s ideas. Similarly, SotN owes much of its “innovations” to Rondo of Blood and... you know... Super Metroid.

SotN was certainly impressively well crafted for what at the time was still essentially a new direction for the series, but let’s not pretend that alone is enough to make it the best in the franchise. Games, especially games as old as SOTN and the rest of these collections, should be judged on their own merits, not on those of the games that came before them; certainly, SC4, BL, and ROB were less experimental than SOTN, but judging each on its own merits, they’re excellent games, featuring tight gameplay, brilliant level design, and wonderful sound design. SOTN is roughly at the same level of quality as they are, but about the only thing it actually does better is the presentation of its story and incorporating gameplay elements that haven’t been widely used in the series before. The rest of the design is still very good, it just isn’t quite as good as the others I’m mentioning.

And I’m not sure what you mean by “non-fans.” I’ve only come to enjoy any of the Castlevania games in the last six years or so, and to this day I wouldn’t say any of the games rank anywhere near my personal favorites; I can appreciate how well-designed some of them are, and I have fun playing some of them, but for the most part none of the games in the IP feature a style of gameplay that really resonates with me, so I’ve never considered myself a Castlevania fan, per se, even after ROB finally got me into the series a few years ago.

In any case, I’m not sure why you’re getting so hung up on the fact that someone would recommend other games in the IP over SOTN. It’s not like I’m calling SOTN terrible, or even merely pretty good. I’ve acknowledged in every post I’ve made on the subject it’s very good. It’s just that ROB and SC4 (and maybe BL) are a bit better.

I've actually been in expert company, having spent a great deal of time around professional and amateur game developers a couple years back, and one thing I can say (at least of most of the game devs I know) is that a lot of them actually don't know what makes a "good" game. They're more often more focused on being "innovative" that it blinds them to how fun their game actually is.

As far as critiquing other people's games? One of the things we did when we got together (for over two years before our editor stopped having the time to do it) was record a monthly round-table discussion podcast where we'd share our opinion on some of our favorite games. And just like the people in these forums, opinions varied wildly on what the game devs thought were good or bad games.

Like the sayings go, everyone's a critic. Opinions are just like a**holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

So I picked up requiem. Played the first few levels of rondo, it was pretty tough but got through. Switched to Symphony, finding it easier and more enjoyable. Just entered the upside down. I’m a huge Castlevania fan, and I missed the past couple of times Requiem and the Anniversary Collection went on sale, so seeing them drop another dollar each is pleasing. I’ll be grabbing them both before the sale ends. I’m actually playing Bloodstained right now on my PS4 and thoroughly enjoying myself with its similarities to, inspirations from and homages to SotN. People are going to enjoy different games because people have different tastes (duh), but as for my nobody-asked-but-I’m-still-giving-it opinion, I’ll just say this: I loved CV thanks to my memories of the original series (playing 1 & 3 w/ my younger bros, in particular), but I didn’t fall in love w/ the franchise until SotN. I didn’t get to play Simon’s Quest, SCIV or RoB until much later in life, so I don’t have the same nostalgia blinders on for them, but I can definitely appreciate each for what they brought to the table.

Well something to keep in mind about Dragon's Dogma is that the PS3 version never had any trophies related to the dlc, Bitterblack Isle. PS4 version does though so it's way more time consuming/challenging to complete than the base game. Granted it's not a particularly hard game overall depending the class you play but it is a very time consuming game.

Oh also Dragon's Crown is a weird case because the PS4 version actually shares the same trophy list as the PS3/vita version. It even has cross-save/cross-play so you can transfer in your old save file. If you 100% completed the original release there isn't much of an appeal to owning the PS4 version.

Its interesting you mention Metal Gear. MG2: Solid Snake is a phenomenal game and a technological marvel on the system it ran on. MGS is the far better game, but it is pretty much a copy of MG2. The plots are different, but many key scenes were lifted straight from MG2. In fact, I read somewhere that Kojima re-used those elements because, initially, nobody played MG2 because it was on dead system, and didn't want those ideas to go to waste.

So, no, MG2 isnt better than MGS, but it did give MGS some of it's best moments. It's pretty interesting, I think.

I had a month long trial subscription last June and it worked just fine for me. If I played games quicker I'd probably subscribe.

Portrait of Ruin & Order of Ecclesia sure but Dawn of Sorrow you would need a way to draw to defeat the bosses, and I just don’t think Konami would put that much effort in to change that.

He doesn't show up if you go straight to the Playstation Store. You have to boot up the game and then go to the Store from within the game.

I'm probably in the vast minority, but I want a remaster of the N64 Castlevania games. I actually loved Legacy of Darkness.

Yeah, it is. I've seen it in other games before, though. Hitman comes to mind; you couldn't purchase the GotY Upgrade directly from the store, you had to do it from the store once you got in-game.

Oh also Dragon's Crown is a weird case because the PS4 version actually shares the same trophy list as the PS3/vita version. It even has cross-save/cross-play so you can transfer in your old save file. If you 100% completed the original release there isn't much of an appeal to owning the PS4 version.

I actually plat'd Dragon's Crown back on the PS3 but picked up the PS4 version for cheap during one of Target's B2G1 sales regardless of the shared trophy list, specifically because I knew I could import my old character and I remembered how much I loved the graphics on the PS3, I imagined the PS4 version would be even more beautiful. Unfortunately, in the six years since I last played it, I completely forgot all the nuances of how to play it, so I'd pretty much have to start all over just to learn the game again...

I would love a GBA Castlevania trilogy myself. I really liked the 2nd and third games and found Circle of the Moon a bit rawer, but still good.

Unfortunately, in the six years since I last played it, I completely forgot all the nuances of how to play it, so I'd pretty much have to start all over just to learn the game again...

Hah. Yeah I never actually got the plat in the original release so I will probably pick up the PS4 version at some point and finish it up. Not on this sale though most likely, though the price is pretty amazing.

I got this deal again sometime last Aug-Sept. Definitely worth the dollar but shipping still too slow for me to continue at full price.

So Kerbal Space Program has been on sale for the past few weeks during the Spring Sale. The DLC is full price. Tomorrow Kerbal Space Program will no longer be on sale. The DLC will go on sale for the Games Under $20 Sale.

You won't be missing too much by not having played the main games. The P3/P5 dancing games kind of dropped the more complete story mode that was in P4 Dancing All Night, so it's pretty much the straightforward dancing gameplay with smaller story/character interaction bits.

I bit on dragons crown and dragons dogma just because of how cheap they were.

I decided to replay dogma as a new class since Assassin got boring playing it twice, now im choosing the route of magickal archer... but the way to build one apparently is to play as other classes the entire game. the hell?

dragons crown might be fun for my kids to play with me, i dont think I have the disc for ps3 anymore but i wasnt too terribly far in.

Youngblood is coming up as 19.99.

Onrush price is right but I got that free from plus already.
