Don't get why people are in an uproar about this. PS3 controllers didn't work on the PS4. And it was only a couple years ago that PS4 controllers were made to work with PS3 in a limited capacity.

Outside of the promise for the newest gen of Xbox One controllers to work on next gen Xbox, have controllers ever really been forwards compatible? I can't think of any outside of the Gamecube controllers.

You're right, but Microsoft set a good example this time around, and of course Sony's not following it. In addition, the DualShock 3 sucked, so there was a lot less motivation to carry forward the controller last time around.

It's been the case since they announced PSVR being BC, as there'd otherwise be no way to play those games without the controllers also being usable on PS5.

DualShocks on the PS2. GC controllers on Wii. Wii controllers on Wii U. That's about it for major consoles in recent memory.

For regular accessories, it's a bit bigger since wheels, fight sticks, mics, guitar controllers, and such have more flexibility.

Pretty soon people are going to realize that Xbox is the place to get the most bang for your buck. Whether it is using old accessories on the new console, the ability to play almost the entirety of your Xbox library on one console, the value of game pass, or the rumored potential of dropping gold and the multiplayer paywall. And with the upcoming economic downturn it is a great place to position yourself. Sony is acting a lot like they did at the launch of the PS3, not watching what the competition is doing, not paying attention to the global economy and it is likely going to get the smacked again.

It is always fascinating to see you gush about how happy you are with your current pimp Microsoft. All those things you mentioned they did all that because after how this generation started they were playing for second. They were going to kill the used game market, and implement an always online connection. They would’ve gotten away with it if Sony decided to do the same but they didn’t. Both companies have their faults and triumphs but you just sound way too fanboyish.

Well from what I remember when the Xbox one was announced they were so focused on using it as something to enhance television watching instead of what games were coming out. And then trying to force some very unpopular things that really killed their momentum right out the gate.

I am only a fanboy of my wallet hence why I'm on this site. And regardless of what Microsoft has done in the past they are killing it on value proposition right now and Sony needs to match or they are going to find themselves in a fight like they did in the 5th gen. Because while this generation is won, there's a value proposition comparison for the next generation. Sony made the assumption that with BC and their dominance in the PS2 era, that that would translate seamlessly to the PS3. They made some poor decisions based on those assumptions, and the rest is history.

Coasting because the PS4 won its generation while Microsoft is busily laying the foundation for next-gen risks repeating those mistakes. I'm not saying they should be giving away the store, but not 'exerting' themselves risks repeating history.

They made some poor decisions based on those assumptions, and the rest is history.

Coasting because the PS4 won its generation while Microsoft is busily laying the foundation for next-gen risks repeating those mistakes. I'm not saying they should be giving away the store, but not 'exerting' themselves risks repeating history.

I am pretty sure there’s a middle ground for that but they don’t have to give away as much as Microsoft. Game pass ultimate is great, but that came about because they were not selling as many games as they wanted so they changed their strategy.

I see no reason why gaming won’t follow the same path that TV and movies are. I expect more and more publishers to do services like EA already does, and in less than a decade gaming will be you simply use your gaming device to download and play games through subscriptions. Game Pass is currently like Netflix, but expect other publishers to go the route of Amazon Prime, Hulu/Disney+, HBO Max, CBS, NBC etc. I’m literally shocked Activision hasn’t done it already. Other companies with enough stuff to do it are probably Ubisoft, Capcom, Square Enix, Take-Two, Konami, and Sega. Bethesda and Rockstar don’t probably have deep enough libraries but they could just straight up turn their stuff F2P and sell craploads of currency and cosmetics to cover it. Google Stadia really is a great idea, but the market isn’t ready. I expect to look back years from now and simply say, why did we even have multiple consoles.

Regardless of the reason Game Pass came to exist, it does exist and it is the best value in gaming, hands down. There is no arguing that fact.

Unless you're stating something that applies to you only.. that is not a fact and you're bad at arguing. Value is subjective. What if someone doesn't particularly care for first party Microsoft games? What if someone values ownership over bang-for-buck gains through a subscription?

I don't care much for Microsoft first party and I still feel that way. But fair point on value being subjective. Though my point of value was the pure financial aspect. Obviously if you prioritize ownership then you aren't prioritizing financials. And you're probably right, I'm not the best at argument and debate, thanks for pointing that out.

Is it a "fanboy" comment if it is true though? When I get my Series X, all I have to do is sync my 3 extra XB1 controllers and play any game on it when people come over. With the PS5 I will have to pay $200+ for 3 new controllers that may or may not be readily available for awhile if we want to play anything other then PS4 games.

I have been hearing speculation that DualShock 4 controllers will work, I have been hearing speculation that it won’t work so I’m not gonna comment on this until I hear from Sony themselves.

I didn’t see this article but I see now they won’t work with PS5 games when will work with PS4 games via backwards compatibility. OK I need to see what these controllers can do to see if they are worth it if it is great I will get more than one when I get the system if not I’ll just use that one and that one only.

One rumor on twitter right now is the battery lasts 3-4 hours longer than the DS4.

Not liking the direction a company is going in doesn't mean they're repeating past mistakes. The PS3 and the current situation are not alike at all. PS3 era Sony was defined by doing things their own personal way and expecting people to eat it up. Current Sony is focused on actually bringing consumers what they want, which is simply video games. Just in the first half of this year alone we've had P5R, FF7R, Nioh 2, Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and other smaller games as well. Some of those will be on other platforms later but that doesn't really matter in the here and now.

gospelman pointed this out but you're too blind to your own personal belief that the "best bang for your buck" is the most important thing to a potential game buyer. You're completely ignoring that there is a huge market for what Sony is doing and it's a market that Microsoft seemingly has no interest in. Sony might not be doing what you personally want them to do but they are clearly doing what a bunch of other people want or Ghost of Tsushima wouldn't be their fastest selling new IP of the generation. And all those games mentioned above wouldn't have been financial successes otherwise.

And that's not to say value doesn't matter at all, it does, but content matters just as much, if not more. If Microsoft actually wants to "smack" (as you say) Sony next gen they need to actually give people who are interested in games like Spider-Miles and Demon's Souls a reason to buy their console. Just saying they're more consumer friendly or whatever isn't going to cut it.

No matter what side you are on, unless you personally own stock in the company, console wars mean nothing. Both consoles will get about 90% of the same games. And, most of those will be indie games that also end up on the Switch.

This. I prefer Xbox but buy exclusives on PlayStation. But with most games going everywhere it’s just a matter of preference. One reason I like Xbox is for the controller and I do like the direction they are going in with GamePass. That said I also love PSVR.

Console wars are stupid. Just do you.

A few of those games aren't sony ips so their success has little to nothing to do with sony. ff is gonna sell moderately well because of brand recognition.  ff also hasn't been a console exclusive since the beginning of the ps2 gen. and persona atlus has been building up for the better part of a decade now and fills a niche in the genre as there aren't many games like it.  And with stuff like p4 moving to steam odds are that they will be moving p5 and p3 there as well eventually for more sales.

For me it mainly depends on version differences. Like I'd go for switch versions for the portability factor and occasionally they come with extra content. But they also more often than not cost more than the ps4 and xbox versions so when the price is 10 or more difference I just picked up those over switch versions. And we have to throw in pc as well which occasionally is the cheapest option for a game.

The only things that matter to me would be price of games, the systems and accessories and whatever exclusives they have (which nintendo usually has the strongest grouping of exclusive wise). I wait till the systems are cheap to pick them all up and play all of them. I see no reason to back only one of them unless you have no interest in what few games other systems offer.

Except for the fact that Sony is literally throwing money at them to help those games be made? It's not like Square or Tecmo decided to just only put FF7/Nioh on PS4 at launch. Sony is involved in those games.

P5 is the only one of those I listed that Sony seemingly has no direct involvement with but they love bringing it up as one of their exclusives for whatever reason. Something about it has always been odd to me personally, but that is straying too far from my point.

 
I'm certainly not fanboying any machine.  In fact I had no intention of getting the next Xbox until the Game Pass $1 deal last E3, that turned me completely around on the Xbox brand and now I just like the direction Microsoft is going.  They are outflanking Sony in a number of areas.  Ultimately, competition is good, it has already made Sony adjust pricing on PS Now and I expect Sony to evolve the service even more to what Game Pass is given its popularity.  But not everything is going in the right direction at Sony, the rewards program has been gimped while Microsoft has further embeds rewards into their ecosystem.  Backward compatibility and hardware forward compatibility etc.  All that said, I will be buying both systems at launch, but it isn't going to stop me from emphasizing where one company is outshining the other.  People should not give Sony a pass because they have good exclusives.

I looked into Game Pass partly to rationalize upgrading my dust collecting One S to the Cyberpunk Xbox One X. While I was able to get a pretty incredible deal (3 years for $90) Game Pass totally changed my view of MS. Now I don't see every buying an Xbox 1st party or indie game considering Game Pass appears to get the best of both of those categories.

 
Yeah as someone who buys both consoles every generation it's not even a question: Microsoft is giving a substantially better value with Xbox. Between full library moving over, controllers, gamepass. It's not even debatable as a system I'm already fully set with 4 controllers and a large backing of games for Xbox.

It's not fanboyish to acknowledge a company giving a good deal. Microsoft has even acknowledged that that's what it's going for. If you want the exclusive AAA major titles PS is still your best bet which is why as always I'll be buying a PS5 with it. I loved FFVIIR, Last Of Us 2 and many other PS4 exclusives this gen. That doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is pushing a way better value.

I'm not sure why people get so caught up in these console wars that they can't acknowledge reality. Does everyone buy both consoles? Definitely not - it's expensive to do. And if you're one of those people absolutely buy whichever one you find more appealing. Microsoft is pushing easy transitions and a more affordable ecosystem in the long run - they're going the PC route. Sony is staying more traditionally console and will continue doing what they do best - and worst. But enough with the fan boy nonsense. Both companies are just competing for your money
 
For me alone...it's usually I play a lot of niche games and whichever console gets the most of those games I usually get. For a while that was the Vita, then PS4 and likely PS5. Also my friends will be up for multiplayer on PS5 so that's my choice, but yeah if they were all on XBOX then I may go there. Frankly a machine plays games and as long as they can run OK enough I'm happy about it.

 
Really, the only reason I got a PS4 is because that's where the weeb market was. But now thanks to both Sony and Nintendo pulling 180's on their content/censorship stances, that scene is now just as strong on the Switch as the PS4, if not stronger.

Nintendo games have always been my thing. I already have no interest in Xbox; if current trends continue then I'll have no reason to get a PS5 either.
 
I don't think it's any contest when it comes to exclusives, Sony has Xbox beat. 

I am glad to see that Sony starting to create Playstation-ready Bravia TVs. It's great that Xbox is blurring lines with PC but I doubt most casual console players care.

Sony has a great product but they better get their ass in gear when it comes to the value proposition. They used to have great digital sales, but now that the game has moved on to subscriptions Xbox is offering considerably more bang for the buck.
