Sigh, just ran into the reason I prefer XBox's use of batteries.  Sat down to use the PS5 and the controller was out of juice since my son unplugged it to charge his Switch controller shortly after I plugged it up.  And since I can't use the PS4 controllers on the PS5 game I was about to play I was out of luck.  The charge cable isn't long enough to reach where I sit, sadly.

I need to get another controller for backup, but wanted to wait for new colors.  Any word on when we might see those?  Might have to go ahead and just get another white one.

Maybe fugly wasn't the right word. It reminds me of a lot of indie bundle games I've seen through the years. If you look at the PS blog post it just feels a bit generic is all. I could see this easily on some mobile platform. Kind of reminds me of those Clash of Clans commercials.

Edit: It is on mobile, so I'm not so surprised about the graphics now.

It's a former DOTA 2 mod, whose characters were largely based on Warcraft 3 characters, that had to replace the assets to go independent from that game.

Neither of you policed anyone's opinion, you both just reacted to someone else. Your reaction was to generalize someone's opinion of a screenshot for a "fugly" game into what I guess was negative commentary on society as a whole, which is both excessive and a little hypocritical considering your statement here.

News flash? The game is pretty fugly, lol. They ported a mobile DOTA spinoff game to PS4. And a chess game that plays itself doesn't sound that fun to me, either. Doesn't matter if it's free if there are hundreds of other free games more appealing to the person who posted.

I think he's talking about the 99 cent charge. Usually promo periods are free and bill you after that period is over. Is the 99 cents really that important? Either you continue afterwards and they make money or your cancel and they don't.

I don’t know of a free trial that I’ve had recently that didn’t ask for credit card information at the time I signed up. To be fair, I don’t sign up for many. I also wouldn’t sign up for one without reading the terms of it. It may not be customer-friendly, but going in expecting anything different is foolish.

The whole Gold, Deluxe, free to, weapons, outfits... I've never seen a more nightmarish handling of getting the "complete" game. I own 1 and 2 digitally, bought the gold, and yet I can't seem to access the cult mission apparently without another purchase. Even finding help online distinguishing which from which proved difficult as many others couldn't discern the differences either.

 
Charging by default unless you remember to explicitly say not to is anti-consumer. I know I'd be pissed of I went to a restaurant and they decided to keep bringing and charging me for food because I didn't specifically tell them not to do that.

I don't believe I have ever seen a free trial that works this way without giving you the disclaimer that you must cancel before the trial ends or else you will be enrolled/charged. They give fair warning, the average consumer just likes to click through without reading and then pretend it wasn't they're fault.

Let’s be honest:

People need to actually pay attention to what they’re doing and what they’re signing up for, and be responsible enough with their own money to remember to manage the things they sign up for, no question. Getting suckered into paying for something they didn’t necessarily want in these cases is absolutely their own fault.

But these companies also know there are a lot of people who don’t, and that’s the entire reason these promo periods work the way they do, to prey on the unobservant and the forgetful.

That much I can accept as part of human nature—on both ends. But when you start charging a nominal admission price on top of capitalizing on those inevitably unobservant or forgetful people, that just seems like adding insult to injury.

This last sale was pretty good, I just miss the weekly sales and the flash sales. Come on Sony publishers, now that the PS5 is out you gotta slash those PS4 prices at a more frequent clip. Gotta sell them while you still can...

I mean, no, not really. Chronologically it’s first, but it’s absolutely a prequel, there’s the assumption built in that you’ve played at least a little of the series before it.

It’s probably better to start with Kiwami or maybe a later entry first to get familiar with Kiryu and Majima. I feel like even Kiwami isn’t the best place to start for Majima, honesty, all the additions sort of undermine his character unless you’re already familiar with him.

I started with Zero and I didn't feel lost at all. For a prequel I think it's unusually good at being accessible.

 
I think Yakuza 0 helps a lot before Kiwami, because going in to it by itself is a little rough. I'm not talking gameplay wise, but story and character wise. 0 has some of the best gameplay so it may ruin future enteries, but I like seeing how the gameplay evolved through the games, and still like the older ones.

Ralph Nader is one option. I agree that practices which rely on getting people to forget something/do something accidently that they didn't mean to, are abusive and immoral. It's pretty disgusting that so many people on this board jump on the "people just need to be responsible and know what they're signing up for" horseshit. Shows how far degenerated and abusive our society has become.

That being said, there is another option to deal with these practices besides Ralph Nader and legislation: the credit card company can institute policies protecting their cardholders. MasterCard, for example, has specific requirements about contacting the consumer to get consent to charge before a free trial period ends, and if the company charges at the end of a free trial period without consent MasterCard will charge back, ultimately with the option of pulling their contract.

Other free-market solutions are a bit shittier, but do exist, like services which allow you to create limited-time-access credit card numbers that would expire before the trial period ends. Of course, the very fact that such services even exist is quite a testament to how degenerate and anti-consumer the business practices in use today have been allowed to get.

You can be on either side of this debate, but equating the (more than valid) idea that people need to take responsibility for their own finances with "a degenerate and abusive society" is just ridiculous.

I'd argue that idea is what's causing a lot of societal problems.
