my $30 PSN credit from BestBuy just came in

not sure if I wanna wait for P4G to get another price drop.. or just jump on it now.
was thinking of getting P3P and some other Capcom PSP titles too
If i were you, I'd go with p3 portable and some of the other games you're looking at first.

P4G is amazing, what I've played of it, but having played the earlier entries in the series I'd definitely recommend people start at 3 - not because of complexity or difficulty, but because 4 is so refined. 1&2 are very 'traditional' jrpgs, hard for most to get into after playing 3&4 because the mechanics haven't 'aged' very well, supposedly. 3 is rock solid, but 4 improves on it in a lot of areas, so going back to play 3 after 4 would feel like a drag to most people. Plus, p3p pr p3FES (if you go console) will give you TONS of hours of gameplay if you're interested in any further p4g price drops.

Can anyone recommend the Red Star and Susume Tactics? I've already purchased all of the Capcom PSP games on the sale except Monster Hunter and I bought Persona 3, but I still have $5 left from my $50 PSN card, so I'm trying to figure out whether I should get one of those games. I own the Red Star on PS2, but for some reason, the shooter sections seemed balls harder than the fighting sections, so I don't know if playing on PSP will be better or worse due to the lack of a second analog stick.

Tourista makes a good point. 4 improved on 3's mechanics so much that going from 4 to 3 can feel like a downgrade at times, despite it still being a good game (I really need to get back to P3P. I'm almost at the point of having Aigis in my party). & yeah, like Frisky said, it eases you into the game. Though don't be discouraged if the first few hours feel like nothing but text & explanations about how to play the game and setting the plot up.

Pretty much, let your first playthrough be about experiencing the story and getting the hang of things, then on New Game + which carries your social stats (courage, knowledge, etc.) among other things, focus on trophies, maxing out everyone's social links, etc.

Xenogears I'd agree with but FFIV was a bit before my time I'm afraid.

I can definitely understand people liking it though for its time.

Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy IV are all awesome games. Out of curiosity, any love for Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore? I do not quite put them near the top like the other games mentioned, but I still have fond memories of those games as well (Jeremy Soule of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim fame composed the OST for Secret of Evermore and it is beautiful).

On another note, all this positive talk of Persona 4: The Golden has sold me on buying the PSN version. If you consider the $10 rebate for every $50 spent as reducing the total cost to $40, it is as if every purchase to reach that point is 20% off. Persona 4: The Golden at $24-ish is very reasonable and I do not see Atlus putting it on sale for less than $29.99 for a while. I really enjoyed Persona 3 Portable immensely (I still need to play the other Shin Megami Tensei games), so I look forward to seeing all the improvements that Persona 4: The Golden provides.

Although P4 may beat P3 in terms of gameplay mechanics, I feel as though P4 takes a step or two back with the characters. I played a couple of dozen hours of P4, and the whole time I couldn't help thinking about how much I missed Junpei and Yukari.

This is a really divisive subject. I personally adored the P4 cast (Yuki and Kanji are two of my favorite characters in gaming, and the new S-link character, Marie, is really really great), while P3's didn't do a ton for me. I'm not saying you're wrong or that your opinion is invalid, just pointing out that there are many people on both sides of the split. Which is kind of cool, in a way.

I agree.

It's all good stuff really. I hate how everything has to be a competition about what's better. It's all good and all fun (If you are open minded). I've always been able to just enjoy most everything despite any flaws or preferences for one thing or another. (With exceptions)

Am I alone?

Hey, I looked through the last couple pages and didn't see anything, so what do you guys think about Persona 4: Golden? Is it worth it?

I'm actually the same way. There are very, very few games that I've not liked at all. I think it's because I don't get overhyped about a game beforehand and then it fails to live up to my expectations and I also don't compare the game that I'm playing to anything else.

Evermore is my #1 wish for a console revival. Spent a lot of time on it as a youngin, and not many other rpgs

Yeah, it is cool that the casts have enough dimension and differentiation to appeal to players differently. Atlus deserves credit for not homogenizing characters across the series. (Tales, I think, is a prominent counter-example.) As much as I love the core characters from P3, it would've been pretty lame if those characters had just been "re-skinned" in P4.

I loved secret of evermore myself and would buy a revival however it seems a bit unlikely

I'll admit it, the social aspects of Persona games overwhelm me. I love the battle system, but i feel that there are so many 'missables' in the overworld that it sets off my OCD bad and I need to refer to a guide, which then destroys my experience and will to play the game.

I want to love them. I really do. But something about them just doesn't work for me. Also of note -- no matter how good the story is, and it does seem good, i can't get into a high school sim.

I've tried and loved both P3 and P4G, but gave up on both of them after only a dungeon or two simply because half the game just doesn't speak to me at all.

However, I think anyone mildly interested in them should fork over the bucks because i can tell they're great games and the devs should be supported (and more games like them should be made).

Yeah, this stuff stresses me out as I've been going through P3P, I can't bring myself to just cross my fingers and hope the answers I give will get the desired responses. I consider it secondary to the dungeon-crawling, though, and overall it's still a lot of fun. I just don't have nearly enough free time for a game like this, by the time I finish P3P I bet P4G will be $20 or less.

re: Susume Tactics (psp)

trying to find some more info on this. I can only find a single review, and it's not exactly well written:
http://www.ps3blog.net/2012/03/23/psp-review-susume-tactics/

Some key points taken from the review:

"The game itself is similar to Tower Defense games, but in Susume Tactics! you can control each individual unit, ordering them to move to meet the enemy. They still attack within a specific range (displayed by a circle around them), and they attack over and over until they have destroyed the enemy or they are blown to pieces. Just like in regular Tower Defense games, you need to obtain resources to be able to build new units, and you obtain them from the enemies you defeat. Unlike most TD games, in Susume Tactics! all resources must be picked up by the player or else they are lost forever, which means you can’t just send your units toward the enemy and call it a day."

"Susume Tactics! is a very fun release that brings a portable Strategy/TD game to the PSP. The huge amount of content available, the excellent controls, the novelty of using the PSP in the vertical position, and the great price tag are all great incentives for those looking for a new digital game for their collection."

---

The review has some screen shots too... it's very minimalist graphically, which isn't too big of an issue for me since some of the deepest Tower Defense style games are very much function over form.

it's only $2.50... i'd definitely give it a shot if it were vita (trophies) but as it's psp i'm still on the fence. but it sounds like it might be a solid experience for tactical gamers-- a new take on tower defense (where you assault with your 'towers') sounds interesting.

I've kinda felt the same way about Persona 3. However, it was the dungeon part of the game that didnt really appeal to me. Because of the 'elemental weaknesses', I felt like the battles were simply research the enemies, find weakness, switch Persona to exploit said weakness, rinse, repeat. It was kinda boring.

OTOH, the 'dating sim' part was interesting as it has not been a part of any game I've every played before, so it was fresh and new. The first time I blew someone off and they got pissed, I kinda felt bad. That was pretty cool.

I dont really care about collectables so I never felt too much stress in choosing daily activities past trying to strengthen social links.

thankss :D I can't justify a $30 purchase... though everyone emphasizes that the game is great (and in that vein, the developers deserve the money). just need to stretch that dollar though.

I have a feeling I may end up with P3P + P4G :/ that's $40
P4G: 60 hours of dating/friendship sim, and 5 hours of dungeon crawling. I enjoy it though.
It's definitely not that imbalanced. I's probably closer to 60/40, maybe even less if you actually go for all of the collectible item sidequests. Admittedly sometimes you get railroaded into social event things without warning and have to hang out with friends every day for two straight weeks, which sometimes feels like a bit much.

and that's where the games lose me. even 2 nights of reading dialogue and checking a FAQ every time there is a choice (so i say the optimal thing) is too much for me. and there is more than just 2 nights, sometimes.

on the other hand, the dialog in Zero Escape VLR wasn't nearly as oppressive, even though there is a ton of it. I think because ZEVLR let you insta-skip around the various possibilities so you never felt like you were missing out / answering wrong.

Yeah, I didn't stress out about that stuff at all. I used the Vox Populi a bit for planning my days, but didn't really do any FAQ checking for the conversations themselves. It's really not a big deal unless you're going for a "perfect game" which you really shouldn't do on your first playthrough anyway. Just accept that you won't max every social link and focus on the ones you like the most, relax, and enjoy the game. None of the conversation options will lock you out of anything important.

If you're the type of person that has to have a perfect run in your first playthrough of a JRPG, then neither of the Personas are going to be a good fit for you. I know P4G especially isn't possible to do a perfect run, so it's best to just play it for fun and make the choices that you think are best since that's the way to play it best.

I could not get into Evermore.

Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 3) was fantastic though.
Although P4 may beat P3 in terms of gameplay mechanics, I feel as though P4 takes a step or two back with the characters. I played a couple of dozen hours of P4, and the whole time I couldn't help thinking about how much I missed Junpei and Yukari.
I think due to the story mechanic that each character had to go through, I enjoyed the P4 cast more.
Depends on what you mean by "perfect" - it takes effort, but it's possible to do all the achievements other than the ones that require NG+ on the first go-through.

p4's "gameplay mechanics" is in p3p

only p4 golden offers a little more, but P3 over all is better imo, story/cast of P4 kills it

edit: P4 cant be 100% completed first play through dude ha

i'm not so OCD that i need to do an absolutely perfect run, but at the same time i really don't like feeling like i'm missing things.

so for example, the very first sidequest is a dude on a floor of the high school that asks the (imo) rather ridiculously hard riddle about sets of colors. the combination of needing to both
a) check every place for people like that vs. saving time by checking a guide to see where people are means that i'm already leaning towards using the guide since i hate wandering around looking for npcs.
and
b) the difficultly of that riddle + unknown reward for getting it right means i'm also going to want to check a guide.

multiply that sort of thing by 1000, add in social links needing to power up, and rare items only available in stores on certain days for limited times, and it drives me up a freakin' wall.

if you can be laid back about your first play through and just not care, that's awesome. but even though i'm not generally OCD, the particular way Persona is set up just messes with my head.

not to mention, even using a guide and speedrunning to every necessary person/item and having the proper answers in front of me, i still spend to much time doing social stuff i just don't care about.

again, i'm not trying to say the game sucks -- i think it's awesome. it's just not for me. if it was balanced 90 dungeon / 10 percent outside of dungeon i'd be much happier.

but for anyone who likes jrpgs for the stories, i can see why it's pretty much the perfect game.

Here's The Drop for this week:

Bioshock Infinite
(Also on PSN) – Welcome to the city of Columbia. Floating amongst the clouds, cruising far above sea level, this is a place unlike any you’ve ever seen. Please enjoy your voyage…

The third game in the popular Bioshock series, BioShock Infinite breaks away from the underwater setting of the first two games to take players into a floating city held aloft by dirigibles. The game is set in 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, a disgraced former private detective who’s picked up a new case. Your goal is to find Elizabeth, a young woman who’s gone missing and return her unharmed. The only problem is that she’s being kept on this flying city. Columbia was once a symbol of America’s success as a nation, floating around the world as a traveling World’s Fair, a marvel of human innovation. But strange things have happened since Columbia’s unveiling in 1900, and now the city has disappeared into the clouds. DeWitt knows how to find it, but over the years stories have been told about Columbia having unlawful heavy armament and deranged citizenry. Do not expect this to be a pleasure cruise.

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel (Also on PSN) – In Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel Players find themselves on the deadly streets of Mexico as Alpha and Bravo, two operatives working for Tactical Worldwide Operations (T.W.O.), a PMC outfit that drops them in the middle of a drug war conflict for an assignment full of corruption and deceit. With the ability to unleash the power of ultimate destruction, players will need to work together as their objectives unravel, allegiances begin to blur and they face off against a ruthless opposition.

Featuring both online and split-screen co-op, Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel gives players the chance to distinguish themselves from their friends by providing a deeper and more advanced upgrade and customization system. From the mask that protects them in battle to the very weapons that keep them alive, players can customize their own Alpha and Bravo to create the deadliest mercenary team as they see fit.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 (PS Move Compatible / Also PSN) – Fans are able to battle nine of the greatest golf legends of all time in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14. AN all-new game mode called Legends of the Majors gives players a chance to travel back through time and relive the rich history of golf by matching up against the sport’s greatest legends, including Seve Ballesteros, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino and Tiger Woods. Players can work their way through these legends in various eras and take each of them down to earn their own seat at the table of golf legends.

Hoisting the Claret Jug, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories and slipping on the coveted Green Jacket are now all within a player’s reach. In Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 users, for the first time in franchise history, have a chance to go for the Grand Slam by playing historical events in all four majors, the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

For the first time in the Tales of series, the combat system lets the player freely change attack style depending on the battle situation. The characters can fight with two different attacking styles, and the new combat system is easier to control while simultaneously adding new levels of tactical depth.

Terraria – Dig, fight, explore, build! Nothing is impossible in this action-packed adventure game. The world is your canvas and the ground itself is your paint.

Grab your tools and go! You can do many things in Terraria: make weapons and fight off a variety of enemies in numerous biomes, dig deep underground to find accessories, money, and other useful things, gather wood, stone, ores, and other resources to create everything you need to make the world your own and defend it. Build a house, a fort, even a castle, and people will move in to live there and perhaps even sell you different wares to assist you on your journey. But beware, there are even more challenges awaiting you … Are you up to the task?

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Iron Triangle
– Compelled by a nation ravaged by war, it was legendary samurai Nobunaga Oda’s ambition to silence the cries of war and usher in a new era of lasting peace for Japan. In Nobunaga’s Ambition: Iron Triangle, video gamers can step into the role of Feudal Japan’s most powerful warlords and turn this magnificent vision of unification into a reality.

In Iron Triangle, the acquisition of knowledge and a firm grasp of technology are even more crucial to establishing the groundwork for the future of the country. Players must embrace technology, govern wisely and shrewdly, and prepare a near-invincible military force for war on land and at sea. Only with the mastery of these three elements, the “Iron Triangle,” will the nation be united under one sword and will Nobunaga’s dream be realized.

Yeah, if you feel like you can't miss anything, then it's probably not the game for you.

The side quests just give you basic items or money, so you don't need to do them unless you want to get the respective trophy for it. If you don't like them, don't do them. The funky student riddle quests are the best in the game from what I've seen for the writing alone. Only obsessive players should bother getting worked up over them.

Unless you're playing for trophies, you can easily go through the game by just doing what interests you. The social links are really the only thing you need to do because they enhance your party's abilities in the TV world and your abilities to fuse better persona. There's even a decent guide for what to do each day with the feature that shows you what others did that day if you really want a decent idea of what to do.

If you like the dungeons/combat and want more, take a second stroll through each dungeon after beating them to unlock a new weapon for that party member along with it being tougher with new monsters.

WRC....hmm, I've heard the games have all stunk since the old colin macrae named games team had started the dirt series. If this revamp fixes the issues we'd have an rally sim on vita.....EDIT: oh this IS the one.from last year. Meh

The Vita version does NOT have a career mode?

P4G is incredible, P3P is the ultimate portable rpg. Would pick P3P since its cheaper and just wait for P4G to drop more, pretty much the same game overall. Also the games can be way more dungeon than doing social stuff, just depends on how you play it (returning to the dungeon in P4G or grinding in Tartarus in P3P). Also love the cast and story in P4G, anime version of scooby-doo.

Thats exactly why I hate it, and im VERY glad yet another person has noticed this similarity lol.

Does anyone know when we'll be able to download Bioshock Infinite? Is it when the store updates on Tuesday or will I be able to do it after Midnight Monday?

Midnight.

my girl and i finally beat zero escape tonite. it was all a good story til we beat it, and then it went off the wall. it was awesome tho, and look forward to beating it over and over. and really there is barely any choices in this game, just ally/betray on ab rooms and choosing which doors to go through. but good stuff. i love the escapes and when my brain clicks.
thankss :D I can't justify a $30 purchase... though everyone emphasizes that the game is great (and in that vein, the developers deserve the money). just need to stretch that dollar though.

I have a feeling I may end up with P3P + P4G :/ that's $40
Let me buy you P3P. PM me your Paypal details.

On Reddit I like to giveaway games when I have a little to spare... if you end up liking P3P, which I think you will, pass a game on to someone else someday.

No longer just a CheapAssGamer, Tourista has transcended into GenerousAssGamer territory!

I have P4G on the way from Gamestop and I'm really excited because it'll be my first Persona game. I have a feeling I'll like it enough to want to play the others, but I really can't justify the purchases right now.

Yeah, those were different days for sure. Part of what made Secret of Evermore cool was its distinctly American sensibilities. Even though it was a game by Square it was designed and developed in the US. Sure, a lot of the play mechanics were lifted liberally from Secret of Mana but the ideas, attitude, and overall feel were very American. I always felt that was what set it apart (for good or bad) from its JRPG contemporaries.

EDIT: Well played Tourista, well played. My hat goes off to you. :applause:

For anyone who has not seen Pay It Forward, I recommend it. It seemed really cheesy at first, but I have to admit that I love that philosophy in general. Like donating a game (I try to go with Pokemon games as they maximize gameplay imo) to charity or those christmas gift programs.

Keep up the good work Tourista!

Question is there a thread somewhere about shmups I saw that Raiden III just got there as a PS2 classic, and most of the shmups are on JPN PSN store so if anyone can tell me a thread with that.

Thanks

/r/PlayItForward - Great subreddit for giving away games you love and discovering new ones. also dig /r/RandomActsOfGaming

Between this forum and those subreddits there's a great community of amazing gamers to be found :)

I'm trying to spend $50 so I can get $10 back and I'm down to my last $1.19 (have $1.38 in wallet). Anybody know how I can spend the rest? I really don't want to buy a $20 card because I'm short a few cents. By the way, I'm a PS+ member.

i haven't ever pre-ordered anything off Psn, but i thought they let you start downloading before release date, and just unlocked it on release? no?

If it really has to be in that 19 cent window, I think you might be out of luck. Minimum funding is 5 bucks, if you are willing (as I am) to give Sony your credit card.
