You're one of the only people I've seen say the combat is actually enjoyable to be honest, usually the attitude is that it's fine for what it is but as its own thing it's not worth buying the game for.

But really that's beside the point to me. The gameplay stuff I am talking about is coming right from the lead dev dude who I just find really off putting. I don't really care for his argument about how a video game doesn't have to be fun, the entire thing hinges on him comparing games to movies which I've never been a fan of because I go to games and movies for entirely different reasons. His focus was not on making a game that was fun as much as it was one that takes you on an experiential journey. Which again yeah that's fine but for me that means I'll wait until it's dirt cheap.
As someone who loved Hellblade I don't think it has anything you're looking for and that's totally fair. Its an atmospheric horror game that has a ton of mediocre combat arenas thrown in for no reason. The bosses are cool and the puzzles are interesting enough but you're really only there for the "atmospheric horror" part rather than the "game" part.

I bought waifu bartending and Papers Please with my 20% code earlier today, and for the first time in almost six years of owning a Vita it gave me some parental lock warning for va-11 hall-a. Didn't even know it had that option.

I should have been more careful with my comment, I knew it might have been taken as combative, but I was more just philosophizing about the question of what the PS4 has to offer to a PC gamer. I'm also someone who would pretty much always prefer to buy a game on PC if it's available, hence my a-bit-too-extensive thoughts on the topic.
It's cool. I re-read it a few times and decided that it wasn't your intention :)

I certainly do feel like the PS4 offers a solid single player experience with games that are not available on PC.

Bloodborne reminds of Symphony of the Night. In the way that after I played it and completed it, nothing after was able to hold a torch to it.
Speaking of BB I'm currently on the last chalice trying to defeat the last beast before the queen and man this MoFo is making me RAGE.So damn close to obtaining my 2nd ps4 platinum trophy 1st was HZD.

Yeah that's mostly my point. I don't have any beef with the game or anything and I actually do want to play it, it's just the price point. I hate paying more than a couple of bucks for a game that only takes a few hours to beat and then I never play it again. Kinda like me and movies as well (since that is what dev man was comparing the game to) I haven't bought a movie in like 15 years (last thing I legit bought was the original Matrix lol) I just end up renting anything I want to see when it hits the $1 rack at my local movie place (cause we totally still have one of those in business somehow.)

I am a cheap cheapskate.

So Papers, Please not only does not have a platinum trophy, it also doesn't even have any golds? Definitely killed any chances to buy prior to a big discount.

It's sad. I got an e-mail that said "UserName, a Holiday Gift just for you!" and I was like,  "Oh my God, am I finally getting a 20% code?! The first one in over three years!" Then I opened it and it was the sweater theme. Such a cruel joke, Sony. :(

Lol never thought I'd see the day people won't buy a game they are interested in because of trophies, or rather a lack thereof

Is that the chalice version of Amygdala? Cause that was def the one boss in BB that gave me real trouble, it's literally the only boss in any souls game I've broken down and summoned a real player to help with (though that dude died like 10 seconds into the fight so it didn't matter anyway.) It's especially funny considering the Queen is stupidly easy, you pretty much just chase her around and slap her a bunch till she falls over.

You're better off not summoning anyone for that fight, since the health buff to the boss only makes it harder.

No not amygdala although that one did take me a few tries but I bested her or it.Its the headless beast that spouts out a worm from it's head in the Great Pthumeru Ihyll Chalice.Hope when I reach the queen she's as easy as you describe it.

Lol never thought I'd see the day people won't buy a game they are interested in because of trophies, or rather a lack thereof
huh? people buy games for them. people don't buy games because of them.

i know my buying habits are affected by:

1) a game i'd want to plat that has ridiculous headache inducing trophies

2) a game with glitched trophies

3) a game without a platinum

I like to 100% games, so putting all that energy in and not getting a plat feels odd to me now. and i don't even care that much about trophies! but i want to know that if i -do- like the game, and i -do- decide to invest the energy to 100% it, that i get a plat for my efforts.

Yeah I was just hoping I'd get someone really good (especially because I was such a high level at the time) but nah the dude I summoned died in a comical way, after that attempt I just went at it solo, especially cause it took like 10 minutes to summon that guy.

Oh yeah I remember that one now, he was certainly annoying but I managed to get him faster than amygdala for whatever reason. The queen is really easy though, I got her on my first try. I didn't really even figure out all of her attacks before she fell over. I mostly remember a lot of screaming and blood but that's about it.

That one was actually really easy for me. It's been a year, but you just have to keep your distance at a point (half health?) and roll one direction til the head shoots out, and keep to his side leg or something. I forget.

I had trouble mostly with Ebrietas and Amydgala. Mainly the 1hko lightning palm.

The Queen wasn't a walk in the park, but I too was like, "That was it?"

Well I'm off all next week from work and won't return till Jan 2nd and all I feel like doing is "cleansing these foul streets"

Edit:started BB and beat the beast I was talking about I think undead beast now onto the queen.

Edit2:Beat the queen then destroyed the moon presence beast and got my PLAT I'm off to bed.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/171497873/earthlock-festival-of-magic/posts/2076463?ref=backer_project_update

Earthlock: Festival of Magic is getting a relaunch of sorts as just Earthlock with the new shouldhavebeen edition they're planning to release early next year with a lot of extra dev work on the various issues they got as feedback that they wanted to fix before moving to the sequel. Those that already own the game will get the new game as a standalone game when it's out, as the saves do not transfer over to the new version.

That's interesting, I bought it on this sale cause I thought it looked cool. Seems like a good deal considering how cheap it is right now.

It's been almost a year since I got my plat for BB, but if I remember correctly it took a few tries, but definitely better off not summoning for help. You can be a little aggressive until the worm sprouts out, then just be patient and wham the worm if you can since that does more damage.

The queen is definitely one of the easiest chalice bosses, but I died the first time because I underestimated her since every comment I read online was about how easy she was. Stay focused and you'll walk all over her.

Well the dev diaries and interviews for the game before release literally had lead dev dude whose name I can't remember saying that they weren't trying to make the game fun, they were trying to make it a disorienting miserable experience. He pretty much never even talked about the combat which was a red flag to me considering that is generally the focus in other NT games.

I think it looks kinda interesting but not being gameplay focused and given that it's only like 7 hours long apparently means I'll just wait until it's super cheap. I get the appeal of it but that's not personally what I am looking for in a game.

I didn't see those interviews but I saw enough of Hellblade to put me off. That name itself seems misleading because a game called Hellblade makes me think it's going to be action and gore filled instead of a journey into a disturbed person's mind. I really don't give a damn about stuff like that as I want my games to be fun over anything else. I'll pick up Hellblade when it's 5 bucks mainly for the easy Plat.

The fact that I prioritize fun over any other aspect is why my GOTY lists usually look different than many others. I doubt many have Dragon Quest Heroes 2 in their top 5 but I do because it was a really fun game to me.

The game is about Senua traveling into Helheim (Norse Hell), so it's a fitting name when added with the audio design trying to depict the feeling of psychosis. Also, it's a play on the name of one of their previous games (Heavenly Sword).

Defunct has pretty good reviews on Steam but sounds really short. Also kind of curious that the regular price on Steam is $9.99. So even with the 30% discount it’s still higher than the PC version. Weird.

[Fuuuuuuuuck]
Thank God there's nothing I want this time around. It's getting to the point where I'm dreading seeing new deals because I don't want to have to add more games to my 40+ list.

Although after hearing you guys go on about Hellblade, that one is definitely going on the list. Dammit.

Seems like my external HDD for my PS4 has died. At least in that it's not being recognized in my PS4 or my PC, so I'll have to get another one and redownload all of the stuff I had on it (almost all of my recent purchases). This is why being able to change out the internal hard drive on consoles is important to me, as I don't trust externals to last that long (got this alongside my launch PS4 Pro a year ago) and they take a ton of games with them.

not sure if it’s been mentioned, but i noticed that despite being signed up for the newsletter (that i’m not geting) there was a note that i needed to verify my email. i did that and i did receive the free theme. i have no idea if the verification was the reason for missing out on the weekly newsletter, but i’d check this as well just in case.

Did you click anything in particular to get a note about verifying your email?

I don't see it but figure it would be worth a try as well.
