I liked Demon's Souls, but it felt extremely clunky. What I watched of Dark Souls I & 2 didn't entice me to try those, since it looked too mechanically similar.
I think it's the opposite of clunky. The gameplay is what makes D*S so good. Good luck swinging a big maul in a hallway, etc. It's essentially game melee perfected.

Aren't the platinums just grind-heavy or requiring multiple playthroughs?
Hardest trophies are generally getting all gear. There are generally a couple hard to get shards you need to upgrade stuff, which will either require a bit of grinding (for quantity), a bit of luck (for super rares), or an additional half-playthrough (to get to a guaranteed drop source).

Lots of people enjoy playing the game over and over due to the difficultly increases in ng+ and beyond.

Plats are fairly basic, overall, though require learning the game inside and out in terms of various upgrade sources, systems, etc.

I guess I just got extremely lucky then with my four Souls platinums. Especially since I don't know the games inside and out.

Again, there are literally two ways to play the Souls games.

1. Strong melee character who just bashes everything in sight.

2. Strong magic character who just launches ranged magic attacks to kill everything in sight.

Anyone who tells you that there's some fine tuned, intricate behind the scenes mechanics at play are completely, 100% lying to you. That's just an excuse for when the game does something cheap. The Souls games are the epitome of "Do something 1000 times and get 1000 different results." That's not because of amazing game design or programming, it's because of the unbalanced mess.

And I'm sorry, affa, but melee perfection? Nearly every site I've visited about the games, people are complaining about the melee and how more attention is given to perfecting the magic system over everything else. Unless you are extremely high in a few stats, melee is pretty much a joke.

I know people are going to jump on me, but other than minor tweaks, they are all basically the same. And I'm talking about very, very minor tweaks that are barely even noticeable. I only stick with them because they're incredibly easy platinums.
I agree, 10 hour plat? Shorter than going through all The Walking Dead S1 episodes.

Aren't the platinums just grind-heavy or requiring multiple playthroughs?
I can speak to Demon's being quite easy.

I think it's the opposite of clunky. The gameplay is what makes D*S so good. Good luck swinging a big maul in a hallway, etc. It's essentially game melee perfected.
I disagree. Everything in that game is, at best, regular, with many game design decision being mediocre. The difficulty of it stems mostly of the major hand holding in games today.

People play it and hype it due to thinking they are part of some super cool group that only "gets" the game...

Those abominable hipsters.

Talk about poisoning the well. You can't discredit what is essentially the scientific method by stating your opinion. I think you must have gone to the wrong sources for information on the mechanics, because most of them have already been tested and proven. There is no doubt that the souls series flex amazingly complex game design. It use to be a heavily debated subject but the battle is more or less over at this point. This isn't my opinion, or the opinions of some raving fanboys. There is absolutely no emotional bias in the assertion that the game design theories behind the games are intricately woven. I urge you to do more research, because it's actually very interesting stuff even if you don't like playing the games.

As for the various ways you can play the game, Brute strength and magic are not the only options. You should know better if you've played the game, as dexterity and quality builds are probably the most popular in DkS.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but these videos might interest you:

Well, I got from having gotten the Cling Ring to opened the main gate of 1-1 in my first try. I'll give that gate area a try later. It does seem pretty easy (so far) as I've grasped the mechanics. Of course I haven't run into a single new enemy type in that time, so I expect that will change things quickly as I run into more knight and boss characters.

Melee feels pretty decent. I'm still staying the hell away from it and casting spells whenever I can.

How many of those tests did you do yourself? You read results of these "scientific tests", from people who love the game enough to conduct them, and you say there's no bias? What? You're not going to do to that much effort to prove people wrong unless you love the game. And if you love the game, that's automatically bias. Try going to sites that aren't dedicated to the games to see other opinions. If I'm doing research on evolution, I'm not just going to visit sites that love the theory of evolution and call it a day.

I've done my own testing by platting Demon's twice, and Dark Souls 1 and 2. My first Demon's plat, I mostly followed the "rules" that I was told needed to be followed in order to have an easy time with the game, and it took me forever. Once I abandoned those methods, and said "fuck it, I'm just going to bash everything with brute force and/or magic" the games became incredibly easy.

There is literally nothing in Dark Souls that you can't destroy with the homing soulmass spells. Dark Souls 2, you just lightning spear and it's a cake walk.

Anyone else have trouble grabbing Mercenary Kings without owning a PS4? I've been able to pick up previous PS+ PS4 titles through the web store, but this one shows up as "download to your ps4" ... "how to activate your ps4". Not planning to get a PS4 until end of this year at the earliest.

Doh, I grabbed it some time ago and had forgotten. Thanks guys!

Isn't that what it normally says when you've already added it to your collection?

Don't worry, Tyler. I'm done arguing about it. Once talk started about there being scientific tests to prove these theories, I should have taken the hint.

I only play melee users that use no magic of any kind. I did one pyro run on DaS and found it incredibly overpowered. So my experience with D*S is almost completely melee, which means I have no reference point to care about how OP magic is or isn't.

I pretty much disagree with your assessment of "Do something 1000 times and get 1000 different results" completely. I don't even know what you mean by that -- once you learn an enemy you can predict their moves by their telegraphs. Melee combat never feels random, it feels extremely controlled. If you get hit, it's because you're either incorrectly reading your enemy or over-estimating your stamina bar or got too cocky.

I've built multiple high level melee chars in both games (still working on ds2, limited time). Never once did I feel like doing something 1000 times gets 1000 different results. Like, I can't even figure out one place in D*S where that's the case. The game follows it's in game mechanics tightly. I guess maybe if you button mash and never pay attention to enemies movements it might feel surprising when you hit sometimes and get clobbered other times.... but that can't possibly be what you mean since that's true in any combat game.

As for your souls platinums, you must know the games better than you think you do. In order to have all the plats, you need to know where stuff drops, what/how to deal with covenants (including discovering how to join, how to achieve trophy, etc), how to beat certain harder enemies. You probably also know the fastest way from point a to point b, the best sequence to play the areas, how to navigate certain treacherous areas (pits, etc), where certain hard enemies are (Havel, etc), the best ways to farm certain things, the best use(s) for certain Boss souls, and other minutia like where to find certain items/weapons/armor and how different NPCs react to certain things. Even if you read a guide for all that, unless you have no short term memory you've got more in your noggin than you think you do.

Compare that to any normal game that simply requires completion (possibly more than once) plus a quick collectible run and maybe a skill shot or two. You don't need to have any great grasp of Uncharted, or Assassin's Creed, or Infamous, or pretty much most games to get the plat. D*S definitely aren't the hardest plat out there, but it does require knowing quite a bit about the game world even if you use a guide (I don't on first run). Even with a guide, that would be a lot of looking up stuff... verses following a simple collectible guide on an easy run in, say, Uncharted.

Or maybe you're just trolling DS because reasons.

The thing I like about the Souls games when people play the whole game with Soul Level 1. There are some people that will beat the game with just using a shield.

I'm working on DS2 now and I'm glad they don't have the ring trophy. I don't know if I'd be able to beat the game without dying or resting at bonfires to get those rings. From Software really added something for people that want those rings.

@ affa, I use a lot of melee when I play the Soul games. I'll use it so I can learn the enemies pattern and I like the combat of the games.

Grabbed Tales of Symphonia Chronicles even though I have a ridiculous backlog. 75% off and many high reviews won me over. I've still never played a jrpg before but have many in backlog: FF 6, 7, 8, 9, Tales of Xillia, Ni no Kuni, and probably more :p

I liked Demon's Souls, but it felt extremely clunky. What I watched of Dark Souls I & 2 didn't entice me to try those, since it looked too mechanically similar.

This. It's not that it's clunky but it's very rigid and intentional in it's mechanics. Yeah you can get past a lot of stuff recklessly but there comes a point where to really advance you have to be observing patterns, execute what you want to do with precision, and most importantly learning from your mistakes. It's not meant to be a high tempo action game where you're running around pulling off 49 hit combos with crazy weapons, it's methodical and exacting and that's when it's at it's best.

Oh, neat...I've got 2000+ souls, but thought I had to finish the level to do anything with them. And yeah, I went with Royal. Soul Arrow one-shots just about everything so far (blue knight has just a touch of HP left afterwards, red knight still slaughters me), but I'm still using melee most of the time to get more comfortable with it. I'm pretty good about parrying slashes at this point, but the knights tear me apart because I haven't figured out the timing on thrusts and they seem to use that more often.

Now I just need to look into how to level up.
Maiden in Black (the leveling NPC) doesn't appear until you beat the first boss. Ignore that red knight, he is guarding a door that is currently locked and you won't be able to open for awhile.

Backtrack from where that red knight is back onto the parapet, there should be a fog door next to a blue eyed knights, that's where you are supposed to go next. Fog doors cover entryways until touched, then they disappear forever. it's a way to help players from getting lost, if you see a fog door it means you haven't gone that way before.

You can make boat loads of souls in the first level of the Shrine of Storms so don't feel too bad if you die without recovering your blood stain.

Zone of Enders collection or armored core v?
Do you prefer an arcade style racer or a sim style racer? That's pretty much the same choice between Zone of Enders (arcadey) and Armored Core (Sim).

All this talk about Demons Souls makes me want to give it another go. I beat the first level as a melee class and didn't like the game. Can I reroll my character as a magic user now or do I have to reach a certain point in the game?

Well to be fair he was in Symphonia two years before GoW and while the series is cliched it wasn't quite as cliched then. Symphonia is over 10 years old after all.
You misunderstood: Kratos is a character in the Tales games - not the Kratos of God of War fame. So what Blaster man is saying is why i this Cam Clarke guy playing all these various characters throughout the Tales series when he can't act worth a damn.

Any word on pricing for Broken Sword 5 and FM2014?
Europe price is

  • Broken Sword ep 1 (£9.99) $16.85
  • Broken Sword ep 1-2 (£15.99) $26.85
  • FM2014 - (£29.99) $50.59

Guessing

  • Broken Sword ep 1 - $12.99
  • Broken Sword ep 1+2 - $19.99
  • FM2014 - $39.99

Hah, never noticed that. I interpreted it as a Nolan North situation. That all makes a lot more sense now.

Damn Jay's gone again? That sucks. Cap's gonna have to step his jackass game up even more. I'm not even sure if that's possible.
If there were any justice in the world Cap would be banned and jay would still be here. The ratio of legit funny cap posts and maddeningly stupid ones has been pretty lopsided lately.

Too high for the Broken Swords methinks.

So anyone know what Jay did to get banned?

I ran through Demon's Souls with a pure melee build. I was pyramid head, with that huge dragging sword. I usually one-hit everything by the end of the game, but I was a glass cannon. I loved invading other's worlds, but I hate when I keep falling off the stage and losing my levels, lol.

also ProStotch, I just beat ch11 and working on the 'bad ending'. Wow, I'm level 50 and all the enemies just upgraded to level 69. I beat the first 'boss distortion' and then it put me straight into battle with 'editor' and I just died instantly, guess I need to grind some more. Please tell me chapter 11 dungeon is the most difficult dungeon in the game. If it gets more complex then that Im gonna be beat. It was hard enough getting through that and then finding those 3 'extra' bosses. I feel like I am getting there though...

There is a way to de-level in Demon's Souls but it's a little tedious and can't be done for awhile, If all you've done is the first level then you didn't level up that far. "Starting classes" in Demon's souls are just grab bags of starting skill allocations and equipment. A knight or a barbarian, for instance, can eventually learn magic and cast it just as efficiently as someone who started as a mage; just as someone who started as a mage can switch mid-stream to a tank with a great sword. As soon as you get intelligence to 10+ you can buy spells from the vendor on the right side of the Nexus. You can find a catalyst (casting wand) on the roof of the first building on the bridge in the second level of the Boletarian Palace.

CoD: Ghosts MP is still free for the weekend (ends May 5th). Played a little this morning. Have to admit it isn't quite as bad as I remember. Having more fun with it than Shadow Fail, but the maps still leave a lot to be desired. I don't think they've topped any set of maps since the original Black Ops. Those weren't perfectly balanced but were still loads of fun. Even Nuketown had more soul than anything to come out of CoD recently.

Graphically it looks nearly identical to the PS3 version, lol. I'm sure that has more to do with it being cross-gen, though. IQ is clean as hell. Runs smooth (barring some nasty drops on the Prison Break map). Truly, the biggest difference between versions is...the controller. At a glance many of DS4's improvements are obvious, but it really sinks in when playing a competitive FPS. World of difference. Now we just need a decent FPS to go with it.

Idk, he slightly rebounded with that SotC post.

Didn't realize bestiality was against the TOS.
There's a joke here about someone's wife or girlfriend, I'm sure.

Just finished Demon's Souls 2-1. Died a few times at the beginning due to those flame-throwers, but otherwise my only death was getting a bit too close to lava. :)

Aaaand upgraded my character, using all my souls in the process, then finally explored enough to find out there's a guy selling spells and I missed out on a chance to get Heal. Drat. Later, I suppose.

What's the difference caused by the controller?

It amuses me and saddens me that God of War 1&2 will be available digitally on the Vita and God of War 3 still isn't available digitally on the PS3.

Agreed. The DS4 is heaven for FPS. Actually, its great for just about everything. Its tough going back to play PS3 games because the controller feels so light and fragile by comparison.

And the SOTC thing was pretty damn funny. Just took a string of misses to get to it.
