If you ever get around to the DMC collection I would just skip 1 and 2 and go direct to 3, it's a prequel and has the most refined gameplay. DMC 1 Is so much clunkier since its the first in the series and DMC 2 is just ass. Though since you just played Dante's Inferno another melee combo game probably isn't a good follow-up.

So I think the correct answer is no dessert until you clean your plate of Demon's Souls, one or two bites doesn't cut it Sonny.
Wrong--he should play all three DMCs in the HD Collection because trophies.

TROPHIEEEEEEES :joystick:

1 is clearly the best for pure survival horror, but 2 was equally good in its own regards. It doesn't topple 1 for its strengths but excels in its own improvements. Depending on which experience you prefer I can easily see 1 and 2 both being argued as best in the series. 3 jumps the shark.

In any case, as the squirrel said, you shouldn't really marathon any of them. Fastest path to leaving shit in your backlog is self induced burnout.
I actually found 2 to be irritating. The pacing of the series went from slow enemies you will scramble like a maniac to stay away from, to supersonic enemies that are on your face a second after they even appear on the screen. So you end up spending more time stomping monsters than shooting them. It completely reverses the kind of pressure the game is putting on you. It felt like they were at least partially reacting to the stockpiling of health kits in the first game by creating gameplay that forced you to use them constantly.

I felt like 3 had the best pacing and overall gameplay design. It tightens up the controls and basically continues what 2 started while fixing the things that irritated me in 2. It also doesn't hold a candle to the things the first game were best at: the atmosphere and feeling of isolation, the things that make a game "survival horror". Moment to moment gameplay was better in 3 though. I think people dismiss it because of how far removed it was from the first game, not because of how good it actually is on its own merits.

I also hated the story in the second one. The first one wasn't great either but I could forgive it for trying, but 2 existed in a universe of stupid people. 3's base story didn't bother me as much, even though the inclusion of character plots could be irritating. People don't play horror games for annoying love triangles. But nothing annoyed me as much as what I went through in 2.

I am curious what people think is the "perfect" or acceptable length for a game. I just read a review that said that Transistor was short with a 6 hour campaign, but this to me seems like a perfect length for a $20 downloadable game.

What are you in the mood for? Also, if you don't use backloggery.com, you should. It has a cool "fortune cookie" feature that can help with these decisions. Also, what I've done with some of the HD collections is pick 2 and alternate them. Kinda helps keep me from getting tired of the series before I finish the collection.
Eh. Any of them, really. The only one I'm unsure about is Dead Space, simply because I've not gotten particularly into horror games in the past. The intent is definitely to alternate, though--I've recently played Infamous 1 and Jak and Daxter 1, so am already playing a few others before I return to those series.

For tracking games, I just made Steam categories sorted by a general time for how long a game takes to beat (Short = < 5 hours, Medium = 5-15, long = 15-25, extra long = > 25), then drop them into a "Finished 2014" or whatever year category when I've beaten the game. For non-steam stuff (Origin, Uplay, Vita, PS3) I just add those to my howlongtobeat account.

I looked at Backloggery but am not seeing that it adds anything over what I'm already doing. I may be missing something, though.

5 Hours or less, because I can finish em that way. Seriously though 6 hours for the $20 seems acceptable to me. People just love to bitch.

I never pay more than $10 for any downloadable game or $20 for console games (unless it's a new release I can profit off of after beating it quickly, like Wolfenstein, or a game I eagerly anticipated), so I don't know if I'm really qualified to answer.

Generally, the less I pay to play something, the lower my expectations--and more often than not, the more I'm pleasantly surprised by the experience.

There's also the sliding scale for genres. Whereas the typical RPG has 50 to multiple 100's of hours of content, the typical shooter has 4-10 hours of content. 6 hours is pretty short for what is basically a semi-real-time strategy RPG when compared to the genre average. Also since the typical downloadable-only game is $15 or less, that's a $5 premium. He probably wouldn't have said anything about it if the game was $15.

So I think the correct answer is no dessert until you clean your plate of Demon's Souls, one or two bites doesn't cut it Sonny.
Hah. Yeah...I cleared 1-1 and 2-1. It feels kind of tedious so far. Lots of taking things slow and careful so as to not get deader. I'll keep playing it, but it's the kind of game that makes me want to take breaks in something else I can curb-stomp everything in.

I've never tried a howlongtobeat account. I'll have to look into that. I just like how streamlined and easy to use backloggery is. Really simple and to the point.

Just ordered a PS4. God damn it. No will power.
I have roughly $200 in my Paypal account I was going to use on one, but when I get one I want to have a huge hard drive from the get-go, especially with the huge sizes of these PS4 games. Couple that with the fact that I have at least 60 more PS3 games to play that I feel are must-plays, and the decision to wait was easier the more I thought about it.

Rakuten deal? That is pretty solid.

I also generally won't pay more than $20 for a console game unless it is one I plan to trade immediately and thus make back most of the initial investment. So to me, 5 hours is a touch short but every person values it differently.

There are a few things you can do to help you along in the early game. Such as seeking out the crescent falchion in 4-1. Follow the path at the start to the fort. Make a left, make another left, then run past the scary dual-katana skeleton and grab the item behind him. It will pretty much far outdamage any early game weapon until you start having enough stones to do mid-tier weapon upgrades.

If you want to curb stomp, maybe try crysis. Isn't the premise of the game that you are a soldier in a super-powered suit compared to your enemies?

The backlog is what's saving me. I've got over 100 PS3 games to go, and still more that I want but don't yet have. That and being a cheap bastard. It's hard to justify dropping $400 for a console I know I won't buy any games for because they're all expensive still.

The games part as well. Cheapest I've seen a game is Killzone at Gamefly for $20, and I only have middling interest in it.

how much??
Rakuten deal. $400 tax-free, comes with MLB 14 and $60 credit back. Sell MLB 14 and probably get a 2nd controller with the credit since controller prices almost never drop.

I thought that's what Tyler meant.
No the game itself is the worst. First off it's an arena/horde mode game, which really should be an additional feature to a game in the first place. Horde mode should never be the bulk of a game. 2nd the game looks absolutely boring and the animations are terrible. Add on the broken English in the trailer and you've got a total pile of shit.

I have a huge backlog too. I should have held out. I'm definitely not abandoning my PS3 though, it will still get a lot more playtime than my PS4 for the first while, because like you I'm not going to be buying many games. But I already have:

Contrast
Dead Nation
Don't Starve
Mercenary Kings
Outlast
Resogun
Stick it to the Man
Assassin's Creed IV ($10 upgrade promo)
Escape Plan
Flow
Flower
Sound Shapes
Super Motherload
Zen Pinball

So I'll get some enjoyment out of my PS4 with those alone, and then start scooping up Killzone, Knack, etc when the price is right.

I haven't seen this deal yet... MLB 14 makes me wanna do this.

I forgot to use the sarcasm font...

In all seriousness, if that game ever did a Flying Hamster HD and was on sale for $1 or less...I'd probably get it. :whistle2:

That reminds me: I've got Burnout Paradise in my backlog... :joystick:
I was actually just playing this last night; my word is it good!

So is everyone going to boycott Ebay now because "oh my god how dare they let hackers get my passwords!".
Depends on if they give me free games as an apology.

Depends on the game. Personally I love 3-4h for smaller indie games, for an RPG 20h is my sweet spot (though rarely are any this short), and around 8-12 for most action/shooter games. Racing games can go on forever and I'd have no problem with it.

I'm trying to wait for Black Friday 2014, bound to be a super bunduru. Psn credit/ps+sub 1-2 game digital downloads and Playstation now related.

Dead Space is awesome, so is Dead Space 2. Totally Resident Evil Survival Horror for PS3. Play it loud or with surround sound/headphones. Only bad part I remember is damn turret sequences.

I just finished Stick It To The Man yesterday. It's very much like The Cave but better. Great style, multiple laugh-out-loud moments. The only negative is the (somewhat frequent) stealth/chase sequences. They can be pretty frustrating, but fortunately they're over pretty quick.

I highly recommend it, especially for free with PS+.

Well, that's an unfortunate comparison. The Cave was a crap game IMO. It's like if you took Trine and made it terrible. Then again, I've played 3 DF games and disliked all of them. As a dev anything they're associated with is a complete turn-off for me at this point.

You didn't like Costume Quest?

I haven't played that one. I've heard good things. Then again I'd heard great things about Psychonauts, too, and I found that to be really boring. The other one I played was Brutal Legend which had a great idea and first section then turned to crap. The Cave I think I played for an hour before completely losing interest (though it did make me want to play Trine 2, which I haven't gotten to yet.)

Anyone else get ticked off when they get Canadian versions of their PS3 games?

This is indicated by the letter "F" at the end of the 5-digit number on the spine. These are games that have both English/French text on the cover, where an English only version is also available. Not to be confused with Konami and Namco games which are all English/French hybrids and don't have the letter F.

Yes. Nothing infuriates me as much as a game that pretends languages other than English have some form of legitimacy.

It could be worse, the ratings on our games look pretty sleek in comparison to AU and EU games. But hey, I'm a collector and a perfectionist, so what do I know. :)

I immediately travel to the location it was shipped from and set it on fire along with anyone unfortunate enough to be inside at the time. then I proceed to piss on the ashes while shouting anti-French rhetoric at the top of my lungs until either the ashes stop smoldering or I feel sleepy.

The Xbox thread has no sense of humor.

Anyway, what's new?
They announced the new, DC Comics licensed, Ace Attorney game.
