You're getting a PS4 before an Xbox One? I thought you already had an Xbone. That surprises me, and pleases me.
Most likely. It's no secret that the PS4 does multiplats better than the Xbone and has the better tech. The only thing the Xbone can bring to the table to interest me is exclusives, which is more or less the position the PS3 was in last-gen. Which is why I said that E3 could have sway over me, and I hope MS pulls their A-game this year to compete with Sony, but I doubt it.

However, another factor is that since I have a gaming PC, depending on how many games don't end up on PC, better multiplats may not end up mattering. I'll just have to wait and see.

But lol @ me owning an Xbone already (I had to ask for someone to help me in thread a day or two ago, so I could log into their Xbone for the free XB1 version of Black Flag's Season Pass) Imo, neither console is worth owning at this point in time. Way too early, especially because I recentlyish got a gaming PC and more games are getting PC ports than ever.

That said, a PS3 and/or Vita are my next console purchases, so the structure of PS+ matters to me. Hoping PS3s will be dirt cheap this coming Black Friday.

This guy gets it.

Not to mention, even if you don't have 1 of the consoles and/or the Vita, there's nothing preventing you from adding the game to your account until you do. So that's an added incentive where you would have a nice library of titles waiting for you when you do get the console, particularly the Vita.
This. I had a huge backlog of games for the vita when i got it a few months ago and i just joined ps+ in June of 2013. Longer standing sub people would have even more. As for the PS4, I just got it a few weeks ago and already had a backlog of 10+ games.

Not an NBA fan but almost bought the game for PS4 because of how good it looked. Very happy I'll be getting it free, even for PS3.

PS. fuck Spelunky!

I think it's more likely that the people "whining & whinging" are people who simply have a different viewpoint or simply not adequately describing what they're upset about.

Some people see the subscription including 72 games per year instead of the 64 or so games that have been included in the past. IMO this isn't true because some of the games are duplicates since they are PSN/Vita cross-play. That's not a complaint, but a point of view.

When you look at this list of games do you count them to be 10 games or 20? It's all about perspective.

Retro City Rampage - PSN/Vita - 12/24/12

Foosball 2012 - PSN/Vita - 1/22/13

Zombie Tycoon 2: Brainhov's Revenge - PSN/Vita - 4/30/13

Knytt Underground - PSN/Vita - 5/14/13

Pinball Arcade - PSN/Vita - 5/21/13

Zen Pinball 2 - Star Wars Pinball - PSN/Vita - 8/20/13

Hotline Miami - PSN/Vita - 10/22/13

Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut - PSN/Vita - 3/11/14

Thomas Was Alone - PSN/Vita - 3/18/14

Stealth Inc.: A Clone in the Dark - PSN/Vita - 4/8/14

I understand that the PS3 is the "dying" console out of the 3 systems now included in PS+. IMO the scaling back of included PS3 games is the main source of "whining & whinging".
This is under the old system, not the new one starting in June/July.

This seems like a smart way to nudge PS3 holdouts toward picking up a Vita and/or PS4 with the games for PS3 being reduced down to 2. For those of us with all 3 platforms, it just means more of a reason to play all 3 without needing to spend more cash to do so.

For myself, with this change, and with 2 at a time from Gamefly, I do not know when I will ever buy another game from retail. It has already been quite some time since I have bought anything from a store. The occasional purchase from Gamefly with rewards dollars is about all I ever buy physical anymore. That is just for games I think will take a long time due to grinds or online stuff when they get cheap.
This is what I am wondering. I dont even have Gamefly and not sure I will ever get through the backlog I already have of Ps3 and Ps4 games. I am sure I will still buy the big boys like the new GTA but thats about it. I didnt do the Target price error, but even then with the other deals that have been around I think I paid less than $35 a year for Plus on average. And I am good through 2016 as of now.

Sweet month! This is the least amount of slappage I've experienced in probably a year! Evergreen titles going away really shouldn't matter to any of us, just new users. Only idiots aren't subscribed to plus for the next several years.
Agreed.

the big mystery is how many ps+ subs are active and how many people claim the free games - if a release like terraria comes out and 100k people buy it at release for $15 then 1m ps+ subs claim it a month later and the publisher gets something 0.05 for each claim for one month, would it really be that bad of a deal for the dev/publisher vs letting it sit there waiting for more people to buy? I genuinely don't know. but this must make sense to somebody because it's still going.

I'd have to count them as two. And that will also make Sly Cooper next month a cross buy to the Vita so next month is really 7 games, in my view.

I'm only complaining about the removal of the evergreen titles as it's a move downward to match the quality of XBL Gold + GwG. I really can't see much of the positive in this aside from the 9 "extra" titles a year.
What? You can't see the positive in removing several games that take up spots for an entire year in exchange for more games over the same time period?

I mean, the positive is built into your very statement.

And seriously, lol at the thought Sony is doing this to compete with MS. The 'sony too' is so ingrained into every conversation it's hilarious.

I paid full price for the first year of plus at $50, got the second year free from getting playstation credit card and bought 2 years worth from Amazon black Friday deal. So, $110 total for 4 years ($27.50 a year). That is pretty good I think.

Ah, I forgot about the free year from the credit card. I bet my average is more in line with yours then. What a fucking deal!

the required sub is a conspiracy in the fact that people keep making the claim it's going to drop the quality of plus, and it has yet to do that. i wish we had stats, cause i'm sure a big chunk of ps4 buyers already had plus before they bought the system. only the people who ran from ms would have been without the sub. they might have pulled in some casuals with it, but i don't believe it was some super successful tactic that boosted them to new heights.

it's only seen as a downward move to those who don't have plus, and they're giving you plenty of notice to sub and "purchase" those games now. igc was more of a tactic to get subscribers than the ps4 multiplayer is. pretty sure there's even a two week free trial you can get now to grab the whole collection before it's removed. they made their move to pull in more subs, and now they're making a move for those of us who've been there for all/most of the time.

edit: meant to put "seen as"
So you're saying that PS+ is like a cult, and only those who have sworn their eternal allegiance to it can see the benefits of the change, so therefore it's not worth complaining about?

I did pretty much say that the change has to do with them dropping tactics to get subscribers which makes the program less appealing, imo. Which I'm sure they don't care about now that they have the sub count they wanted.

Tbh, I've always seen the program as a bit of a trap. This is just reinforcing that notion.

It's only a benefit to PS+ devotees. Not a benefit to people who wanna try out the program, or don't want to be committed to a sub.

No one forces you to buy anything, so how can it be a trap? The whole point of a subscription to anything is to hook you so you dont give it up. No business wants to allow you to pay for one month, stop and then come off and on whenever you want.

Except every proper rental/subscription service ever? The only benefit you get to being subscribed to certain services longer is generally a discount on the cost of your subscription (see: GameFly, MMOs, newspapers, etc).

I mean hell, even 360's XBL works like that. Obviously Xbone's GWG don't, but that's following Sony's precedent.

I call it a "bit of a trap" because the intention of PS+ was clearly to pave the way for Sony's version of XBL Gold, a sub required for MP, so they could get some of the XBL Gold dosh, while pissing off as few customers as possible because the PS3 promised free online. This is another step towards guaranteeing perpetual subscriptions and it just feels kinda dirty/underhanded. Obviously those of you okay with that aren't going to have any issues. But those of us who aren't (the minority) are.

I think concerns over PS+ keeping it's quality up are valid. PS+ used to be all about the games, but now with the PS4 they've included online play. I think there are a lot more PS3 owners without PS+ than you think and the majority of PS4 owners are going to end up with a PS+ membership if for nothing else just to play online. Sony could very well slowly pull the quality back from where it currently is and still keep memberships because of this. I don't claim to be on one side or the other, just that I acknowledge the possibility of this happening.

And of course there hasn't been any change in quality yet; it's way too early in the PS4 lifecycle to see how this will play out. I don't see a big reason to be upset with the current change; it just means that Sony will be able to keep giving the same amount of quality games at a lower cost since they won't be paying for evergreen availability.

Isn't Sly Cooper Thieves in Time cross-buy? And that's listed in the ps3 list but doesn't take up one of the slots in the vita list. So if i'm not mistaken, that's 7 games that month IF you count cross buy twice, but only the normal 6 if you don't double count.

Under the old system, I don't remember them using cross-buy games to 'cheat' the number of games we got. If it happened, it wasn't very often.

For example, in October 2013 we got:

PS3: Kings of Amular, Poker Night 2, Shadow of the Colossus

Vita: Sine Mora, Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami was cross-buy, but they only counted it as a vita game... it didn't 'steal' a slot for a ps3 game.

In other words, Sony have given us no reason to not expect 72 distinct games a year under the new system. They don't use cross buy to cheat that number as you suggest, but rather, if they counted cross-buy we'd potentially be getting 100+.

I love how you say MS is just following Sony's precedent with GWG, but ignore the fact that MS started the whole subscription thing in the first place with XBL.

Good post. The bolded part is important.

Unless this leads to cheaper PS+ subs, or a guarantee of increased game quality, this is a move being done for only Sony's benefit, at my (the consumer's) expense. That's the issue I have with it.

And I said XBL Gold was the greatest thing since sliced bread when?

OK, I have read up to some extent... but am still confused as to what the problem is...

Why is it a problem that the evergreen titles are going away?  We can download them anytime we want after our initial download... so that is sort of pointless.

It seems we are getting more games...  If you have a PS4....

The lack of evergreen titles also means they no longer will be able to list any examples for PS+ games on long-term print marketing, such as on the back of console boxes since the library will be turning over every 30 days. In the past they could print something in May or June with "Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Big Planet Kart, and many more" and it would be good for a year.

But the problem is that at this point, that's essentially just concern trolling. We have no evidence that the quality will diminish, yet some keep yelling it from every tower they can find.

There is absolutely no reason for them to diminish quality. They get paid per user, and they pay devs per download. There's no incentive whatsoever to lessen quality of the free games, since that can only hurt membership. There is, however, a profit incentive in finding ways to woo publishers to offer better and better games (more people potentially sign up).

Since it's pay dev per download, every member effectively pays his own way with room for sony to profit. It's a structurally sound business model that encourages them getting us better games each month.

This is right. I don't get the complaining at 72 games a year now. Before the PS4 was released it was around 60 with 3 evergreen titles. Leave it to gamers to consider an increase of 9 games per year a "drop in quality" and "kick in the teeth".

And breaking news, the evergreens weren't all that great guys. LBP Karting had already been $10 on PSN before it was free. Uncharted 3 had significantly dropped in price already. Xcom was getting cheaper too plus it had a newer, better version coming out.
Your math is wrong, Tyler.

From June 2012 To May 2013, we got 71 games not separating bundles.

From June 2013 to May 2014, we got 70 games not separating bundles.

From June 2014 to May 2015, we should get 72 games.

Where's the increase? #RealFacts

I don't think you're wrong in terms of the inevitable reduction in quality (although it kinda seemed like PS+ was a reaction to get people back on board post break in, it might be giving them too much credit to assume they planned this far in the future). But there's also no reason that you couldn't treat it like any other subscription service - only pay in where there's a month of stuff you think is worth whatever the one month cost is, and that's actually better in this model with the EU style frontloading of the games at the beginning of the month. Much like the other services you listed, you get a cost benefit when you subscribe for longer, but you can certainly pick up a month and then stop using it and, just like Netflix, when you're not sub'd you can't play your games/watch your movies. When you are, you can. The million dollar difference vs netflix/gamefly is the timing - you don't get the entire ps+ catalog from when you were gone, just the stuff from when you were sub'd previously and when you're currently sub'd. It's kind of a brilliant subscription model from a business perspective assuming they're actually making money.

When it comes down to it, even at full cost and assuming I'm interested in only like half the games they give away in one year (what is it, 36 now?) it's still dirt cheap on a per game basis. If you want the best of both worlds (free online and dirt cheap games), gaming on a PC is the way to go still even if you miss out on some console exclusives. But you're still hard pressed on PC to find the per game cost of PS+ with < $1-3 per game, even in the biggest steam sales.

I think we'll see Now fill the gap where they'll have a subscription option exactly like Netflix. And everyone will be annoyed that it's streaming instead of download. And this thread will get super fun.

i'm sure there are a lot of ps3 owners without plus, but i bet the number with it is far greater than those of the ps4 with it. my thing is, even though it may happen, there's no reason to keep throwing it out everywhere you go.

as far as the evergreen stuff goes. if it's pay per download, and the majority of new subs are ps4, how are they saving money on them? only a new sub would make a purchase of it. seems to me that adding more games will end up costing more money in the long run. then again, i don't get too deep in these number games, i could have missed something.

The only thing that changes is now Sony doesn't have that added attraction of the evergreens to draw in new memberships. They probably sat down with the numbers and saw that after huge increases, new memberships have steadied. This makes the cost effectiveness of evergreens not so attractive anymore. Getting rid of them doesn't affect existing members in any way that I can see.

You mean less games. We've been getting six a month since the PS4 came out and still had the evergreens to add to the yearly total.

ex_comp_rule_4.gif

hmmmmm ...

maybe the evergreens will be replaced with god of war-esque glitches 3-5 times per year.

Just added up the games that have been released on ps+ since I joined on July 1, 2013. So far, 69 not including cross buy (actually 70 when you consider the GOW Vita Collection glitch from the plus exclusive trials). When you add in the 6 for June 2014, it will be 75 games in 12 months. I am actually really kicking myself for not joining sooner as I missed out on about another 196 games before, especially games like Sleeping Dogs, Borderlands and Bioshock 2. I also don't think enough is being said about the discounts plus provides.

Are you including ps1, psp, and minis in those totals?

So what? A game is a game and you could negate tons of those games if you want to move the goal posts for those sorts of arbitrary reasons.

I dont give a shit about how many games we have gotten compared to what we will get.  If we get 6 new games a month it will probably be worth it to me.  I dont know how any of you would get through all these games in addition to the few you will buy, borrow and rent from other places.  Even accounting for many games you wont want.

Hmm, I looked back. Not every month - for example, in December we got 5. And in many of those other months, one of the games was for PSP. So I suppose you're mostly right, though I'm happy to trade psp games for ps4 games.

The 2x2x2 system works really well for me.

Except there is.

With the backlog of games people have with PS+, and with the requirement to have it to play online on your PS4, do you really think that many people are going to quit their sub despite a drop in quality for the offerings?

You'd be naive to think that it's going to cause many people to stop renewing, especially with the PS4 being the dominant console in the market atm.

Sony's got you in their clutches now and they know it.

Btw, I think a bad game would get less downloads which would mean Sony has to pay out less. :p

The million dollar difference vs netflix/gamefly is the timing - you don't get the entire ps+ catalog from when you were gone, just the stuff from when you were sub'd previously and when you're currently sub'd. I don't disagree with anything you just said. It just annoys me that less of the catalog is available now at any given time.

Don't get me wrong, PS+ was/is brilliant, Sony's always been good at stuff like that.

How is it at your expense? This is a win-win move for both us and Sony. We get more games and Sony pays out less money. Because arguably, unless you're subbing for a year+ consecutively, you're getting less value out of your sub with the removal of the evergreens. I define that as "at my expense".

As per Frisky's math, we're also not getting more games as a trade-off.

You can have your opinion, but I HATE, no LOATHE when consumers act like they are entitled. Nothing is being done at your expense.
So I can't be annoyed at Sony's change in policy meaning I get less stuff for the same amount of money? Good to know.

According to howlongtobeat.com, January's PS+ titles would take 82 hours to beat the main story.  Like a part time job for the whole month!

Granted, Don't Starve was just a bit less than half of that.

So what? A game is a game and you could negate tons of those games if you want to move the goal posts for those sorts of arbitrary reasons.
I'm not moving goalposts. I simply stated many would prefer that minis have been replaced by vita and ps4 games. That's true.

It's not like we were debating something and I changed the metrics (goalposts) - I was simply pointing out something about your totals. Actually, I was just asking a question, but thanks for the aggro response.

So I can't be annoyed at Sony's change in policy meaning I get less stuff for the same amount of money? Good to know.
Who said that? I said you can have your opinion. You are not entitled to whatever you want from Sony though. I want Sony to give me free games without paying a subscription fee at all, so I guess they are screwing me for their benefit at my expense?

I'm not even sure what we are complaining about anymore. We all have plus. Were not going to unsubscribe. Were still buying games at discounted rates. We all check the store every damn week so evergreen titles mean a whole lot of bat shit nothing to the majority of us. We all have too many games to play without the time to play them. We are all making out like KINGS with what Sony has given us already.

If anything the original model was to get the non-online people into a subscription service so Sony gets $$$ every year. Now it's just the slow move to the inevitable Netflix model when the industry turns over to that.

If we gamed as much as we complain we wouldn't have backlogs anymore.

Hmm, I looked back. Not every month - for example, in December we got 5. And in many of those other months, one of the games was for PSP. So I suppose you're mostly right, though I'm happy to trade psp games for ps4 games.

The 2x2x2 system works really well for me.
I'm fine with getting two of each, it's just a shame to lose anyrhing.

I'd have to count them as two. And that will also make Sly Cooper next month a cross buy to the Vita so next month is really 7 games, in my view.
Like Sony, I only count cross-buys as 1 game.

Also we're getting 8 this month because Mutant Mudds is crossbuy too.

Yeah, they'd be screwing you if they offered free games without a sub in the past, absolutely.

No reason for them to diminish quality? You are assuming that the price of membership for a year covers the cost that Sony pays out for the games a member claims. I find it hard to believe that Sony currently pays out less than an average of $1 a game. And memberships wouldn't diminish that much now that they have a PS+ as a requirement for online play.

MS charged members just to play online for years until recently. I think that if Sony knew they could gradually scale things back and eventually get to this point without pissing everyone off they would jump at the chance.

Again, not taking sides because I honestly don't have an opinion that things will go one way or the other. I'm just saying that it's not out of the question to think they things could play out this way. But this is something that, if it even happens, is years away from taking place (probably not until close to the end of the PS4s lifecycle). There's no reason for anybody to get so pissed over it.

Damn this thread has gone full fuck ing retard over a couple small changes that have almost 0 effect on the majority of us.
