Early adopters could be potentially burnt by all this hype around VR, if they aren't too careful. It kinda echoes back to how "mind-blowingly futuristic" motion controls seemed in '06, when the Wii was the first console to pioneer/utilize it. I was only 11 during that time, but I'm sure the much older CAGers here might remember of how impossible it was for stores to keep it in stock then. Consumers, minus the fact it was Nintendo, seemed sold on that one gimmick. But the charm of it eventually worn off when Sony/Microsoft adopted the concept themselves, and everyone moved on. Hence why the Wii barely chugged along the rest of last gen. Third-party companies aren't gonna bother developing games for a product built around a single gimmick, if consumer interest, forever evolving, is no longer present. So, if history does repeat, nobody shouldn't be surprised if the PSVR winds up on life support or in an early grave.

I am worried that if people were too lazy to watch 3D movies at home with 40 dollar glasses can we expect enough gamers to prefer playing games wearing a big headset?

IMO VR is worth early adoption, but if it makes me nauseated then I hope it's returnable

This is pretty much my thinking. I realize VR is different than 3D, but wearing 3D glasses is pretty mild and most people complain about that. Therefore it's been relegated to a select few who don't mind the hassle. When you have to strap yourself into a headset with a bunch of wires and other stuff, that's not going to be reasonable or desirable to 99% of people - even people who call themselves gamers or techies. A good case in point is my stupid kids who will literally sit in a room with a big screen TV turned off and watch Netflix on their iPhones or iPads because it's just as easy or easier for them. Most people go for the easy entertainment and don't want to be bothered with anything that's even remotely complicated or inconvenient.

To be fair, I don't think most people thought motion control was "mind-blowingly futuristic," even at the time. (You'd be forgiven for thinking that when you were 11.) I think most people recognized it for what it was, a fun gimmick that introduced a new way to interact, without being a long-lasting game-changer.

While VR doesn't change the way we interact with games THAT much, I feel like the level of immersion it creates is a bit underestimated by people that haven't tried it yet. I got to try out an Occulus Rift in perhaps the dumbest application ever, a fork-truck training simulator at a material handling convention, and even in that low-poly, boring scenario, it was awesome. If your entire experience with VR so far is Google Cardboard or the like, it's not doing the full potential of VR justice.

Just my two cents.

Just what I was thinking. I remember everyone viewing the Wii not as a virtual reality console, but as a family-friendly casual toy that non-gamers can get into.

Everybody knows that the future will all be virtual reality.  Then we'll progress to hologram technology.

I won't be an early adopter with the VR though.  I'll wait for some proven results and quality gaming experiences.

On a more important note, WHERE'S THE FLASH SALE?!?

FTFY, seriously, we are due for one.
YEAH!!!!! 99 cent Flash Sale!!!!!

That way I don't feel bad about buying games I'll never play. They're only 99 cents! I'll take ten.

Does Sony not know that we will literally buy almost anything if it's 99 cents.

I think it will succeed as a non-perihperal once its price drops significantly. In other words, I think PS VR will fail longterm compared to competitors. Hell, Sony might have to make the next one PS4-independent.
None of them are going to sell gangbusters in the first year or so because the pricing for each is something only enthusiasts will bother with, which is kind of what they want to kickstart the word of mouth marketing campaign. HTC, Occulus, and Sony aren't putting them out right now for mass penetration, so the fact that pre-orders sell out as soon as they're put up is a great sign for the early part of this new market. Sony having the cheapest barrier for entry with many of their enthusiasts already having everything but the headsets helps them out a ton to make it easier for them to get off the ground running in a way that the others can't compete with until the minimum specs are cheaper to acquire. If PSVR can't gain a foothold with the cheaper entry free, the others have no chance.

vr is def the future. but its def not this generation of vr. im gonna wait until the vr's controlling my mind and body and able to trap me in a game without a logout option and if i die in the game my brain will be microwaved

I for sure thought it was going to be an easter flash sale. From the games on the list, it looks like there is a bunch of obvious $1 games, but there is also a bunch of good stuff. Looks like it will probably be a whatever prices they want sale.

This. Was sure we weren't going to see one this weekend. Now we'll see what the prices look like to see if I'm happy to be wrong or not.

so true. I bought all the spyro an crash bandicoot games and only got to the first spyro. The other 6 or so games are sitting in my backlog. But eh I will get to them eventually if they randomly win my next game poll at some point.

Pretty disappointed by this sale....nothing good for PS4 users...$150 to spend in my wallet and I'm left with nothing to buy, except paying full price for what I want...

Still no return on Crash and Spyro deals, I'm so sad I missed that sale a couple years ago! I was sure having Naughty Dog on sale this week meant Crash would show up during the flash.

Naughty Dog has nothing to do with those games anymore. They're Activision's to put on sale.

More Atelier on the way:

https://twitter.com/KoeiTecmoUS/status/710943522682245120
Is it sad that I know my birthday falls on a Wednesday this year due to the release schedule of games like this?

Anyways, nice to see more of the Atelier series is making it's way state side... but I've all but given up getting the games after getting them all for PS2 and 3.

Maybe only in the short-term, but I was speaking long term. And in that sense, I completely disagree. PS VR is more akin to a peripheral - something that Sony fails very, very hard at. Competitors are making self-powered devices and in the end, people are going to probably gravitate towards that.

Why pay $400 now for a comparably weak peripheral that will probably be abandoned in a year when you could just wait a year and pay the same amount for a supported, flexible, more competent product.

Keep in mind that only in the short term will VR be seen as a gaming device. Long term, VR in will be more widely adopted by non-gamers and gamers alike.

I hope we've all learned our lesson by now as far as Sony peripherals go. Playstation move, Playstation TV, hell even PS vita were all a flash in the pan. Sony has a proven track record of hyping things up and then dropping support entirely just as we're starting to adopt the new hardware. Don't fall for the same old trick folks...especially for $500, it's a huge risk of being let down again.

I don't think you know what peripherals are.

I don't think you know what peripherals are.
Move was a peripheral, Playstation TV was billed as a peripheral (remote play), and Vita was in some of the same ways. I understand the last 2 were seperate devices but my point still stands that unless we're talking about Sony's main line of consoles- they let us down every time.

You really think Sony will give up on PSVR in a year? I think we'll have to agree to disagree because I think that's wildly underestimating their potential.

As someone whose never played The Last of Us, is it worth the extra $14 to get the HD version, or should I just spend the $6 and get it on the PS3?

You want the ps4 version. It also includes the Left Behind DLC. Greatest game of all time for me.

as someone that waited so long to buy the last of us that I never played it on ps3 I ended up finally getting it for 25 bucks over the 2015 holiday and I do not regret waiting.

Get it on the Ps4 imo and enjoy one of the greatest game experiences of your life

Well it has a pretty funny story via the dialogue options. Gameplays really dated though. Prettymuch you'll spend every turn using aris to give overdrive to the other 2 party members and himself so you can attack all enemies since thats the only way to target them. Otherwise enemies are put into groups at random like in wild arms 2 and 3. You also need to grind for a little bit in the sewers against kelp monsters to level up since the other monsters can easily kill you.

OK so PS Vue follow up.  It's been a week and I have used it exclusively in place on my existing Comcast subscription.  Quick rundown of my impressions followed by what has turned in to a "mini" early review.

Pros:

  • Picture quality is good and consistently smooth
  • Core package has more channels than comparable Comcast package
  • Equal quality between PS3 and PS4
  • Can stream to one PS3, one PS4 and up to 5 total devices at the same time
  • Channels load quickly
  • Performs well over wireless and wired

Cons:

  • Possible sports blackouts
  • Limited device support
  • Unable to quickly browse channels
  • Laggy interface on PS3

Watched a lot of basketball in addition to my normal selection of programming and had no issues.  Really it was comparable enough quality that I never really thought twice about it being a streaming service while actually watching anything and checks all the boxes you would expect in a paid TV service.

So it's a little easier to look at where it's not quite as good but nothing I would put in the negatives of the service are anything deal breaking to me.  It's great that Vue supports up to five total devices but that you're currently limited to one PS4 and one PS3 is kind of a hassle when you can have two of each on your account otherwise.  Probably not something that will affect normal people but folks like us are more likely to have a spare PS3 or PS4 sitting around they could otherwise use to hook up another TV.  So that leaves your only real option as the Fire TV/Stick.  Stick's reasonable at $40/50 but the TV is $100 and neither seem to go on sale often or for very much.

Only ran in to three issues as far as actually watching any programming.  One was I lost connection entirely to the service and only restarting the PS3 seemed to fix it though this could be on the system itself.  Second was watching the end of the tournament games the other night and all channels were struggling to buffer and became choppy.  Not sure what the cause was there since my network seemed fine otherwise but after switching to the cable box to watch the end I didn't have any more issues.  Those were fairly minor, brief, haven't repeated themselves, and could be attributed to other factors.  The third issue I had was in wanting to watch an NHL game, between the Blackhawks and Kings if I remember correctly, on NBCSN and it was blacked out.  Now this isn't on Vue necessarily as the NHL has very strict streaming blackouts but it's disappointing that it's extended to the streaming of a live channel like NBCSN.  I haven't been home during other national MSNBC game broadcasts or when the Wings have been on Fox Sports Detroit to test how extensive this is (and the local shouldn't be blacked out from what I've read).  Haven't experienced this with any other sports (though there hasn't been any baseball) so far but it does show that Vue is subject to the leagues' rules for streaming instead of broadcast and if a league wanted to clamp down that could lead to more black outs potentially.

The only other issues I've really had are more in that the interface just doesn't stack up to your traditional TV experience.  Most of the experience is centered around the guide other than when you first start the app up and there's a sort of welcome screen with suggestions and things you've added to your favorites.  The guide itself is alright, it displays five channels at a time across the top of the screen with the programming blocks going down from the top.  It's sorted alphabetically instead of the traditional channel number sorting (since there's no channel numbers) and the channels you have added to your favorites are displayed before the rest.  That's helpful but it's still slow to browse through your options when you have at least 70 channels to go through and there's no way to quickly hop between them.  So fortunately TBS, TNT, and TRU all are close together alphabetically with one channel between each and it's not that bad to quickly hop between tournament games.  Where it becomes problematic is if you want to switch between something like Comedy Central at the start of the line up and something like FXX or MSNBC that's stuck in the middle.  There's just no quick way to do it beyond shuffling through five channels at a time until you reach it.  The addition of a last channel button would be huge and I wouldn't mind if they went to a channel number system at some point.

On PS3 this actually ties in to another issue that where the streaming is perfectly fine but the interface can be abhorrently laggy.  Most of the time it's fine but often it takes multiple button presses for it to register your input or you will press R2 to scroll the guide right one section and it will just shoot to the end.  Now this isn't really on Vue as the PS3 OS is really rather outdated and there are many, many things that are every bit as laggy but it still is an annoyance.  The PS4 also benefits over the PS3 with it's rest mode in that you can be immediately back watching the same channel where the PS3 has to start up from scratch and then load the app so it's less immediate if you're trying to get your show on before you miss anything.  Otherwise the experience is basically identical.

They've really been hyping the cloud DVR and that's one thing I haven't really messed with.  Part of this goes to the interface again in that it's not really clear how to use it.  Maybe I'm just missing something but I haven't figured it out yet and the few button prompts seem lacking.

TLDR So bottom line is that there's room for improvement with a number of minor complaints but in every meaningful way it's met my expectations for a paid TV service so far.  I'm hopeful that the areas where it does fall a little short for me will see improvement over time and hopefully Sony will be more flexible in upgrading the service than you see with big telecom.  I'm due for renewal tomorrow and turned the auto renew back on the subscription I've been happy enough with it.

Also as I've poked around it sounds like it will draw from my PSN balance to fund the service first since it's set up the same way as PS+ where if you don't have the funds it funds your account first and then pays for it.  It says it will renew about 1 PM EDT so I will provide an update once it does since I know others were interested in that as well.  I loaded my account up with some of the discounted credit that was out there the last few days so hopefully it works the way I expect.

nice review--  if you use the dvr would like to know what you think--  I use my dvr way to much so it is pretty important for it to be seamless

I'll try to figure that out and report back. I'm sure it can't be that difficult and I'm just missing something obvious that will leave me feeling dumb after I do.

Okage has a platinum so I'm expecting $14.99. Might pick it up this week if there's a discount. If not I have Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits to play first.

I really hope Trackmania is good, will be getting that if it is. Not too many arcade racers this gen.

I'd like to know if the full version of Trackmania has any pure racing against opponents or if it is all time trails and "racing" against ghosts.

Same here. I think this game would be so much more fun if you can actually race against other players in real time.Is that even a feature?
