The comedy genre is a bad joke. I enjoyed The Martian but it would never win in the drama category so they put it in comedy where it can slaughter actual comedies instead. And yeah other films have done it before and will do it in the future. No big surprise.
 
Looks like the winner for the book club is man in the high castle, unless more people join the book club and happen to vote for something else

Gaming Updates!

Started playing Sword Art Online.  Not a clue what I'm doing. The combat seemed to mostly be on auto-pilot (which I dislike), and after the tutorial/opening mission it just seems to be a visual novel so far.

Decided to shelve Mind Zero and start that New Tokyo something (made by the Demons Gaze people?) instead.

Now to investigate the Tower of Ruin in La Mulana.

Lego Batman 3 (should have bolded each title, but I'm not going back to fix it). Back on Earth. Love how short the missions are. I may actually try and plat this. I wouldn't mind going back to the levels in freeplay mode.

Hopefully people shouldn't have trouble finding Man in the High Castle. (I just checked, and my library was out and had 10 holds)

Runs OK, other that two times the game froze when a trophy popped. It was particularly annoying that it froze on the last mission when the "finish operation 4 without losing any men" trophy popped. Had to replay the mission to get the game complete trophy.

It's a fairly simple turn-based strategy war game in which each of your units gets a set number of steps to move and a certain amount of action meter to perform actions. For instance, the sniper might be able to take one shot with his rifle, or 2 bursts of pistol shots. You can use up all your action meter on your turn on each unit, or you can leave some action meter available and point the unit's gun in a direction to cover it. When the enemy's turn comes, if they wander into your firing line and will be automatically shot at.

21 missions which are all relatively the same with 5 or 6 minor variations; kill every enemy on the map, get from point A to point B on the map, touch 2-5 objects which are spread out across the map. The only one that is fairly different is the infiltration missions. You are limited to 2 to 3 units and you have to sneak around or stealthy kills enemies along your path without being seen or heard. If you are spotted your awareness gauge begins to become increasingly redder. Being noticed doesn't cause a mission fail, it just hurts your score.

A couple of missions force you to take a certain unit type into the mission (usually an engineer or a medic), but otherwise you can use any combination of units you have recruited to your army. You can only use vehicles / aircraft if fuel is available on the mission. Vehicles use 10-30 fuel, and no more than 30 fuel is offered for any of the missions (sometimes less).

A decent time waster, but free through PS+ is definitely the proper price for it.

Four holds in front of me for a digital copy at my library. Hopefully should get it to me in time then.
 
I started Xeodrifter earlier. When I heard it was a Metroidvania type game I got excited. Then I got my ass kicked and was not so enthusiastic. I think I'm about 60% done and will try to finish it tomorrow.
 
I enjoyed TWD season 1&2 Telltale games alot, and all the Borderlands games but for some reason I put off buying the Tales from the Borderlands. I really don't know why, but I finally got it in the EU January sale.

I have finished episode 1 and some of 2 and its really really good. Probably my favourite TT game so far. Nails the comedy, character introductions and music so well. Shame the game engine chugs sometimes. Need that TT engine 2.0 soon.

 
I went looking for some Arc the Lad footage since I know nothing about the games. Here's some gameplay. Skipped around a bit but I guess the first fight is around the 5m mark:

This is filmed on PC via PCSX2 with the game running at 1080p, so it should be fairly close to what we see from the PS4 version. It seems really slow even for a sRPG. Seems a surprising choice for one of the first PS2->PS4 games as it doesn't seem to have aged all that well from a visual or gameplay perspective. Maybe somebody who played the PS2 game can weigh in on whether this one is worth looking at.

It's been a while since I played it on PS2, but Twilight of the Spirits is one of the first games I remember playing that received divisive reviews at release. I tried it anyway (partly out of curiosity, partly out of spite) and really enjoyed it. I plan on getting the PS4 version once it gets a sale.

I've only beaten the Prologue so far, but I love it. It's not going to win any awards for graphics (it honestly looks like a late-PS2 or early-PS3 game), but the fantastic music, complex battle system, and likable characters have me yearning to keep playing. After the disappointing Tales of Xillias, it's a refreshing and welcome JRPG.

In conclusion, fuck work!

RIP David Bowie...I did get to see him live back in the day with Nine Inch Nails. First I heard about him having Cancer too...maybe it was well known I'm not sure. So recently Weiland, Lemmy, and now Bowie. Jeez. We need more rock not less. 

 
That's crazy about Bowie. Radio and Internet have been playing and talking about him a lot recently with his new album being so hyped, and him having his 69th birthday just a couple days ago. I wasnt a huge Bowie fan even though I know a lot of people are, but I do have the Ziggy Stardust record I'll be playing today.
 
Did anyone catch Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes last night? I forgot about them but heard some of the highlights on the radio this morning.  That dude is awesome.  Doesnt hold anything back.   He needs to host some roasts.

That list is pretty bad considering a lot of those were in the previous 4-for-$10 and 4-for-$20 promos (IIRC), but there are a few highlights (e.g., CoD: AW for PS4, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron for PS3).

He's always good as a host. There was a run in with Mel Gibson who he trashed a few years ago when Mel was going on those crazy person rants. He introduced Mel, Mel came out and said something completely unfunny so Ricky came back out and said a couple words with him, but the entirety of what he said was beeped, so it was tough to make out what he was saying. Mel didn't look pleased though.
 
wow i loved david bowie. my girl loves labyrinth. Just yesterday we were listening to music and i told her to put on ziggy stardust. I saw him with NIN at riverport back in like '92. and he hosted the model off in zoolander. and super hot wife. Rock lost a legend today

Yeah they had that convo on the radio this morning. They had the audio of what he said. There was probably more, but Ricky asked Mel what Sugar Tits meant. Mel said he didnt know and it wasnt him who said it bla bla bla. Introducing Mel and also introducing Matt Damon and talking about The Martian being a comedy were classic.

But seriously, the Goden Globe allowing The Martian and other movies to be a comedy is a joke. I can never take any movie marketing seriously ever again when they say someone won a GG. If you can make a drama a comedy just to win one it isnt that hard to get! I had no idea they did this.
