PSNOT 3.0 - Let's Talk About University of Kentucky, Baby!

Is there a way to figure out what IP address the MLB.tv app is connecting to? Then I could try running traceroute on it. Verizon is telling me to do that, but I'm doubtful that MLB.tv support is going to give me that info.
You can do a traceroute by name. Looks like they probably give out addresses regionally and one at a time so it should be accurate (since your DNS provider would cache it) as long as you're doing it from any device on the same network. If you just have your phone I'm sure there's a multitude of traceroute apps that use your devices DNS instead of an open provider.

edit - I guess they could totally use different names for streaming than mlb.tv though.

Happy to hear that the platforming gets a nice showing in UC4. That's one of the parts I like quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but man you're overly-sesquipedalian in your reviews. It's funny going from your forum posts to your IA posts and wondering how much time you spent searching for juuuust the right word to drop.
1) Obviously my posts that I quickly churn out on a forum and how I write a published review are going to be very different. I didn't write essays for english classes using my normal speaking manner.

2) Trying to use new and different word helps me grow as a writer. To me it sounds better than "the shooting was really good. the platforming was fun. The story was interesting. Overall the game was really great!" If that's all I ever wanted to write I wouldn't have started a website.

3) I've found over the past year of writing reviews that so many reviews sounds exactly the same. When you look at games from a broad view, so many of them are the same. You're in control of a character that has to complete an objective which usually involves dispatching enemies that stand in your way. Really you look at the same 4 or so aspects: how does it look, how does it control, how does progress work, is the story interesting?

Look at my last 2 reviews: Uncharted 4 and Rocketbirds 2. Fundamentally they're the same game! There is gunplay, platforming, minimal progression systems, the story consists of you and a couple different partners chasing down a bad guy. Look further back and you'll see I've reviewed seven action adventure games since April. It all runs together and using different words help make the reviews feel ever so slightly different.

I don't know how to make the reviews seem more varied, perhaps I'm just not talented enough as a writer. I know I don't want to dive into the minutiae of games in order to find where they differ, because nobody cares about that. I also don't want to start injecting my own life and ideas into games too much, because then you end up with "Why isn't Nathan Drake a day trader?" reviews. So using flowery words once in a while is really one of the few ways I know of to try and make it feel like I'm not writing the same thing over and over.

4) I really don't think my writing is that "sesquipedalian" anyway. Of course I use a thesaurus to help me write them, but I try to never use words that someone would have to look up in the dictionary. What words do you take offense with? Swaggering? Bombastic? Do you think "Anyone familiar with the Uncharted series knows all about its good graphics, fast shooting, lots of platforming, big set pieces, and hard puzzles." sounds better than "Anyone familiar with the Uncharted series knows all about its luscious graphics, action packed third-person shooting, wild platforming, bombastic set pieces, and clever puzzles. " I don't.

5) This is what I consider sesquipedalian.

Not trying to come off as defensive, I do appreciate all feedback, but I don't really understand your critique. And even if I did, I probably wouldn't change how I write for the above mentioned reasons.

MKX is a really fun and good looking game. definitely worth picking it up if you can get it on the cheap if you even sort of like MK and/or fighting games. the online is probably pretty rough if you're new at this point but there's sooo much single player content that you won't miss it if you decide to skip it completely.
Agree with this. If you played MK9/Injustice you should know what to expect here. I found the story mode to be a lot lamer for this one than those other 2, but it sure is pretty and I greatly appreciate Mortal Kombat's accessibility compared to other fighters. Fatalities/X-ray moves are way over the top and awesome.

To be clear, I'm using MLB.tv on consoles, not a computer. I've tried PS4, PS3 and 360. The question is what IP the MLB.tv app is connecting to in those.

I have used MLB.tv on phone and computer but not very much.

I just saw the cover of Far Cry 3 and remembered what a great character Vaas is. I knew I recognized his voice, so I googled it and he's fucking Nacho on Better Call Saul.

I really hope I'm not the only person who had to google what the fuck sesquipedalian meant.
I looked it up, I don't mind that I didn't know. Ya learn something new every day. Seems kind of funny that weird long ass word just meant long-winded though or maybe it's fitting. Lol.

Man, buying that Dark Souls KS board game and all the optional expansion packs is as much as a PS4 after the currency conversion. Some of those figures look awesome though.

Therm definitely used that word intentionally. But I did look it up to make sure what it was, even tho I was pretty sure based on context.

And I don't think therm is wrong. I appreciate his feedback but just disagree with it.

I'm pretty sure the big guy in the second image has testicles with eyeballs for a chin and flowers over his nipples. this game is weird.

Nothing wrong with varied word usage, it's just that when I'm reading your reviews I'll occasional hit a word that I know you grabbed a thesaurus for. When you use a word in writing that I never hear in day-to-day life the word itself becomes the focus rather than the intent you're trying to convey. I'm sure as you use the above approach more you'll get a feel for what works better, but in the meantime some of your choices don't always feel like a natural fit and stand out as a result.

Here are some words/phrases that I thought called attention to themselves unfavorably:

  • Vistas; Outside of travel agents/brochures I don't think I've ever heard somebody say this.
  • Symphony for the eyes; Nobody says this. Not in Nashville, anyway. Maybe that's a thing in SLC.
  • Visual nirvana; I can't imagine anybody saying this.
There are some phrases that work because they're in common usage. Veritable cornucopia is a good example. But if you don't hear somebody saying something like that then I wouldn't use it.

Another issue is that you have a sentences packed with complexity. Words with lots of syllables or that aren't used in day-to-day conversation are fine but they work better when combined with simple, to-the-point context. Sentences with high-point words start feeling awkward and overly-busy.

Sony’s flagship franchise is finally on PS4 and it marks the end of our swaggering hero’s historic journey.

Anyone familiar with the Uncharted series knows all about its luscious graphics, action packed third-person shooting, wild platforming, bombastic set pieces, and clever puzzles.

The character models are also superb, with near flawless facial animations during the game’s many cutscenes.
Reading is very subjective and I'm pickier than most, but this stuff catches my attention and distracts from the intended message. My general rule of thumb is that if I stumble at all while reading a sentence out loud then the sentence needs to be simplified. I'm not fantastic about following that myself, but when I'm writing something I care about I try to stick to that rule.

I probably won't mention this language issue again but since I wasn't sure if I'd brought it up before I decided to call your attention to it. If I have before I'll remember this time since I went so in-depth here. :whistle2:

pro-tip for therm: people often write in a way other than they speak, usually with more variety and eloquence.  I think it's actually the foundation for classic literature.

It was really sesquipedalianish of Therm to use that term instead of just saying tyler was overly wordy.
I looked it up, I don't mind that I didn't know. Ya learn something new every day. Seems kind of funny that weird long ass word just meant long-winded though or maybe it's fitting. Lol.

I'd never heard or read the word before AFAIK. I went Googling for an obscure word that basically meant to use rare words instead of their more common counterpart. Sesquipedalian doesn't quite fit since it's a synonym for long-winded which really isn't the same thing. It still worked for the point I was trying to make, though.

I'm going to edit Tyler's review to make it more therm friendly.

"Anyone familiar with the Uncharted series knows all about its good graphics, good shooting, good platforming, good set pieces, and good puzzles. Uncharted 4 is no departure, bringing all those things to the table, some more than others.

Visually, the game is good. One of the goodest games I’ve ever seen on consoles. The colors are good and good, and the landscapes are loaded with good. I’d find myself losing track of Drake and his pals, instead focusing on a goodly designed good wall or good puddle of good water and how it goods with the good gooding it."

I cant imagine them having that on a webpage. I would assume you can not get to the shell to do a netstat command either.

Once again though, if it was a computer and not a tablet/phone that wont likely help. Might be a way to get to a shell on those to run it, but I definitely do not know how.
The router is pretty feature rich. I mean it isn't an Arris or Cisco but..

I THINK it will log outbound connections to a log. I believe I have done it before but it might have been on another router running Tomato.

Page 115-120 of this PDF describes how to enable and where you would see the results.

There's a bandwidth test that MLB.tv has. http://mlb.mlb.com/tools/bandwidthdetect/

I will try that from home and see if it's giving different results then a speedtest check. It looks like it uses flash, though, so not going to be able to do that from the PS4 browser.
On my 50Mbps Cogent connection here at work I get 10-13 on that test. Runs so fast I can't imagine it being overly accurate. But certainly worth a try.

The base game plus the unlocked stretch goals is a great deal for $113 plus shipping. The add-on bosses are pricey but they're really making this game capture the Souls universe quite well. 3 days to go before Kickstarter ends.

Minnesota House of Representatives voted again to repeal the ban on Sunday liquor sales at liquor stores yesterday.  And again it failed because they want "to protect the little businesses from the big box stores."  Which is fucking bullshit because the little stores just don't wanna be open on Sundays.  This fucking state.

jesus christ you guys said way too much and used way too big of words for me to follow right now.  i still dont know what Therm was saying since that word was like 20 letters long and fuck googling that.

TLDR:  Im tipsy and use regular person words Therm!
