Punch Out Wii - General Discussion and Info
That sealed the deal for me. so the best deal is at
Target right?
There are four routes to chooseth from:
a) Have a Wiimote without a nunchuk? Go for Target's $54 Punch-Out!!/Nunchuk bundle.
b) Planning to buy Punch-Out!! and Boom Blox: Bash Party (Or another Wii game)? Go for Toys R Us' $10 off deal.
c) Don't want to get anything with Punch-Out!!, or want to get something outside of the launch week? Go for Best Buy Reward Zone's $10 gift card coupon. (Reward Zone membership required, according to the coupon)
d) The best deal so far, since there are no extra obligations or gift cards involved: Amazon.com's $39.99 Pre-order deal, combine it with the ECA discount or any other coupon to lower the price further. Of course, there is shipping time to consider, and this deal price will probably only be offered for a few days before they go back to MSRP.
Anyone doing gamestops punchout tournament the week after the game comes out. The prize is stupid ( a punchout t-shirt).

Just got done beating Glass Joe, Van Kaiser, and Disco Kid. Awesome game so far. I'm playing it NES style but I am going to mess with the other options (including balance board) as well.

I'm through the Major Circuit now. I lost once to Don Flamenco and that was it. His timing is a little tricky, especially with the Wiimote/Nunchuck. I tried a practice match against Aran Ryan and I think I know what I need to do against him, although winning via decision seems like a really good idea.

The Punch Out site got a redesign with videos of all 13 regular fighters as well as title defense artwork for those 13, not to mention wallpapers and icons you can get by finding 3 stars.

Aran Ryan is apparently a crack addict now. The way he moves is crazy. Got through everyone up to him without too much trouble except some of the timing on Don Flamenco.

I just beat Bald Bull. I'm like...2-3 against everyone past Aran Ryan now :( the problem with Bald Bull is that during his charge the framerate drops to 30 fps, and it throws off my timing so much it's ridiculous.

Thinking about getting this, it has been getting great reviews. This package would be a good way to trick me into thinking I'm saving greatly on something ($5 nun-chuck or $35 Punch Out ;) ).

Man...I hate Super Macho Man. I can dodge everything, and I mean EVERYTHING he dishes out except for his "Pump It!" attack. There's no tell for it at all. Everything else I can dodge or duck just fine. That one attack screwed me over so many times before I TKO'd his ass in the first round just now :) although...he knocked me down twice :(

I am annoyed that the Canadian release date seems to be pushed back. It's probably due to yesterday being a federal holiday. Blah.

So I just completed the Exhibition Challenges against Glass Joe
He KO'd me twice in the process. Don't get knocked down 4 times
using the Wiimote sideways. Holy crap, it's so much better than Wiimote/Nunchuck.

Im curious about others opions on that too. Is it better to use the classic controller or just the wii remote? Or is the nunchuck and wii remote best?

You can't use the Classic Controller for some reason. Honestly, start on Wiimote/Nunchuck then go to Wiimote and you won't really care. Oh, and I'm not trying Balance Board controls.

Wiimote + Nunchuck + Balance Board = ???

I'll try it out against Glass Joe. I've got him 100% down now, so using the Balance Board shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Hm.. So what is the control scheme with the balance board??
Wiimote and Nunchuk to punch
Lean left = dodge left
Lean right = dodge right
Bend knees = duck

I haven't messed with it too much, I really like NES style since it brings me back to the good old days.

I just beat Don Flamenco and I am heading to bed. That bastard beat me twice! Oh, and Great Tiger whooped my ass the first go round as well. Exhibition Mode is an excellent addition.

So last night I finished Contender Mode, which took about 3 hours. I spent an extra 20 minutes or so with the Glass Joe Exhibition Challenges. I won my first fight in Title Defense mode after using the Practice Hologram first, which is really helpful. It's a shame that you can't continue to use it after you beat that opponent, though.

I can't see the point of playing this without wiimote and nunchuck, but I don't have the love for the original that some do, not having ever played it much. I mean, if it doesn't work well then I would just be disappointed - I wouldn't be satisfied with the wiimote only (i.e. classic) mode. To me part of the point here would be to get a sneaky workout. So... I'm hoping to hear from some that the wiimote + nunchuck works great. Even better that the wiimote+nunchuck+balance board works great. Yes? I do wish they allowed wiimote + wiimote.

Picked this up today. Love every punch out and have only been playing it NES style. That was my favorite as a kid.

But, uhh, what's with all the awkward chocolate bar references?

Anyone getting errors? Three times so far, when starting the game, I get something along the lines that says the Mii channel can not be loaded, please check the mii channel. Then it kicks me out to the Wii main menu. I tried again, same thing. Tried a 3rd time, worked fine. What the hell is that?

I haven't noticed any problems so far.

I'll mention this again:
Wiimote+Nunchuck do work fine, but Wiimote sideways just works a lot better and makes everything easier. I guess what they could have done was make the timing for every fight different depending on your control setup.

This is the error I keep getting. It's super annoying since it quits out to the main wii menu, and I have to keep trying 'til it finally works

Just got it today! Flew through the Minor Circuit, and then got my ass handed to me repeatedly by Great Tiger. My timing is awful for dodging in the right direction for his upper-cuts. Ugh!
Have you tried loading up your Mii Channel?
Yeah Mii Channel works fine. I even deleted a few Miis to see if that helped. It's so annoying having to just hope the game boots

Could be fun...

Well, I deleted all my Mii's, and I no longer get that punch out error. I must have had a corrupt mii file floating around in there or something.

Picked it up at Target tonight, Nunchuk bundle of course. (Just a note for those who are interested in the bundle: It seems that the $54 price point for the bundle is a sale price just for this week; the shelf tag said that the regular price of the bundle is $64.99)

Went through the Minor Circuit with little problem.
But the difficulty for me ramped up at Bear Hugger, as I barely won that one. I quickly got used to Great Tiger's quirks. My first loss was at the hands of Don Flamenco, and I barely won our rematch by decision, even after fighting the hologram. Now I'm stuck at Aran Ryan. (*clenches fist*) For this fight, I'll need to work on my timing.

This game ROCKS!!

I've been working my way through the title defense mode. I pretty much breezed through the first run of characters without much trouble, only to get knocked out by Von Kaiser in title defense. This mode should be fun.

Played for about 45 minutes last night. Beat minor circuit and got my ass whooped by Great Tiger.
Overall, fun game.

However, glad I only paid $35 for it.
It's a shame, IMO, when the best control is NES style. It should be fun/better with the "Wii Controls" since that's what the Wii is, ya know, for.

Great game though!

I got up to Piston Hondo on my first try using motion controls & balance board. This game costs an arm & a leg here in Canada. I figure it doesn't matter when I am only buying a Wii game once every 6 months.

Did you try it with remote + nunchuck? Did it not play well with them? Did you try it with the balance board?

I give up. I have tried the motion controls for a few hours and they are making me lose. I am the guy who refuses to play Mario Kart without the wheel, but the motion controls in this game are just too slow. At the very least, the balance board is a guaranteed fail. Sometimes it ducks when you want to dodge.

This game is all about split second timing. Having your hits and dodge be reliant on your whole body moving instead of just your finger makes it frustrating.

Motion controls on wii are so bad. Shooters(all what? 3 of 'em?) and mario kart are the only good things.

I find the sixaxis on ps3 responds better to motion controls. I don't dare try this game using them.

I'm on Mr. Sandman right now. This is a little easier than I would have liked. I need to give super punch out another go. Dragon chan or whatever is the last guy i remember getting stuck on in that game.

Yes to remote+chuck. It was.. OK. I only played a bit with it. I just wish it felt more real. See, this game SHOULD have waited for the Wii Motion plus....

I haven't tried the balance board yet. Maybe I will tonight.

Yes, motion plus could have added more fighting depth to the game like being able to punch at ribs or how you would go about punching at the face either with a jab or uppercut, but that definitely wouldn't be Punch Out. We'll have to see what other companies do with it motion plus, probably will see something EA.

I guess it is possible that WM+ could have made the punching a bit more responsive, but honestly, this is Punch Out. This game was made for playing NES style, IMO.

Not every Wii game needs to use motion controls just like not every DS game needs to use the touch screen. The motion controls in this game are just to entice the casual crowd into playing it, but in the end they are just not precise enough to play the game effectively, especially in later rounds.

I can't imagine fighting Aran Ryan with the Wiimote and Nunchuk. I had a hard enough time with the old school controls.

I wish I could find the interview, but Next Level Games mentioned something to the effect. They knew about Motion+, had plenty of time to develop for it, but if they choose to do so, Punch Out would cease to be Punch Out, so they opted not to include it.

It's a shame, it would figure my copy would arrive after I go out of town for memorial day weekend. I guy that means I have something to look forward to when I come back.

Same. I beat Great Tiger after about 10 tries. xD
I rented it, and it is very good. I'm on the last Circuit.

or so you think!

Hmm... thanks for the input folks. It sounds like the motion controls in this game are a bit of bust, which is a shame. I'll probably still give this game a try, but probably I'll first pick up Super Punch Out via the VC, or even the original. Seems like if I'm going to get into this game I ought to start at the beginning.

As for Wii motion controls in general, there are plenty of (at least) first party games that use them well, most recently Excitebots Trick Racing, which only allows motion controls and wouldn't be the same game without them, and it works fantastic. When used properly and in the right games, they work great. It sounds like Punch Out isn't the game to use them in, so then you wonder why they included them. I don't know how that will work out - I get that it will attract players to the game (it did me), but will the most players get the game, use the motion controls and then conclude that they should use the classic controls, or will they simply conclude that the game is lousy and never try the classic controls?

In any case, I certainly hope that the tournament held by Gamestop requires use of the motion controls. It would be fun to watch *that* tournament and not so fun to watch a tournament using classic controls. I'm sure I'll be beheaded for that thought. :)

No, they're not a bust. Sheesh. It's just that Wiimote sideways is better. You can definitely beat the game with motion controls (Title Defense included) but you'll have to be careful with your swings.

so last night
I beat Title Defense Hitler, er...Von Kaiser
and he's sort of tough, but it was a bit easy considering I did Practice before I faced him.

I beat the first round of fighters last nite.

man... that Mr Sandman is a bitch!!

what sucks is that once u figure out how to get stars on him, it's still difficult becoz it's so hard to react properly to anything he does... it comes down to jus throwing out random jabs since u recover from them faster than you do from a dodge (which would allow you to dodge an attack you would accidentally dodge on twitch reaction and thus eat fist)

but then as u die like 10 times on him... u realize his pattern never changes and u can memorize all his moves in round 1 o_O

I also dont really like how every single fighter before him is like 100000 times easier...

but now I'm on round 2 title defender so I hear this is the part of the game where it gets interesting.
