Purchased from Newegg, but return at BB?

CAGiversary!
So I just brought Dishonored from Best Buy for $25 + tax. Newegg has it for $25 + no tax.

Yes it's less than a dollar difference, but I also have another item that I bought from BB so I might as well return Dishonored as well. Here's the catch, can I return the UNOPENED identical copy from Newegg to Best Buy with receipt and all?

I know they scan the UPC and all and it should be universal. Just want to doubt check that they don't have a system in place to make sure that you did buy it from a BB store. This is something that I know Macys does with the items you purchase from them.

Thanks!

Yes you should be able to; I don't recall hearing anything about retailer specific copies of Dishonored so they should all have the same UPC.

OT; you're a little crazy to return something because somewhere else had it without sales tax. My rule of thumb is that I don't return ANYTHING unless I find it $10 cheaper somewhere else. I'll cancel a pending order but not initiate a return. I do a lot of shopping and retailers spend a lot of money to have sophisticated tracking software that keeps tabs on all returns by each consumer. The last thing I want to do is get blacklisted from Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg, etc.

If you don't do this frequently you should be all set

While some people frown upon this, I don't see the big deal. You bought two of the same product and you're returning the exact same product to get a refund. No one's losing out here. In fact, Best Buy encourages returning the product if you find a better deal, and even extends the return period for Silver members to do so.

Best Buy doesn't have a system like that in place, they just use UPC's. Some games have limited/standard editions that use different UPC's, some share UPC's. Dishonored, to my knowledge, did not have a limited or store exclusive version, so yes, you should be able to return it without issue.

Personally, I don't see the big deal over tax, I only do it if there's a significant difference ($10+). I think it would cost me the difference in tax just to drive to my local BB.

if it's the same exact product I don't see anything wrong with it. I think it's kind of silly to return it just because of the difference in tax but whatever

You guys are right, a bit silly, but might as well since I have something else going back to them.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ahh I see the times are changing I remember when I first signed up I asked about committing return fraud I was almost tarred and feather threatening emails and all....but yea like others have said you will be ok

While it is a gray area I'm more apt to call buying a game at gamestop to get the DLC and then buying a cheaper version at amazon and doing a return switcheroo "return fraud".

Or buying a game super cheap on clearance at TRU and then trying to return it to Walmart sans receipt to get a much greater value in store credit.

I would not consider this return fraud at all because you bought item "A" from Best Buy and you are returning item "A" to best buy.

But to each their own

So I mean is it TERRIBLY wrong if i purchase a couple of the same game at gamestop, return them, and give the preorder bonus's to friends who buy them elsewhere/not preorder

Yes it is. If they want the preorder bonus, then they can preorder the game.

I think so. If I was gamestop I would cut you off; effectively banning you from preordering or making all sales final.

Didn't you just describe the same exact same situation, though? Item A is still bought at Gamestop, and item A is still being returned. The motive is just different.

if your friend wants the bonus just buy at gamestop.

If the item $5 - $10 more i may return it. If $1 or $2 more and it took 20 - 30 minutes round trip i don't think i do it. Gas price is high & it not worth it plus you end up stuck in the return line for extra 15 to 30 minutes.

What? No!

You're buying Item "A" and Getting Item "A" as well as item "B" (DLC) from Gamestop and buying item "A" elsewhere and then returning JUST item "A" back to Gamestop.

You can't go to Denny's and use a B1 G1 Free entree coupon and after eating the free meal try and return the one you paid for.....

Essentially that is how preorder DLC works... if it was meant to be free you'd get it prior to paying for the game in full
