Puzzle Quest

this game lasted me at the very least 40 hours and i was almost late for work more times than i can count because of it ;)

Edit: also finished all the sidequests and everything else

I should be packing up my apartment, but I keep taking "breaks" to play Puzzle Quest. I'm currently bringing Dugog many, many things ot eat. Too bad there aren't animations in this game. I'd like to see what it looks like when an Ogre eats a Ogre...

And since folks keep mentioning it, what is the companion glitch in the PSP version?

Edit: Sandworms are freaking hard to beat. That sinkhole combo move kills me easily every battle, it seems. Can anyone recommend any tips to beat Sandworms? Also, when you capture one, does it become a mount? The Dune fan in me wants to ride Shai-hulud...

Another edit: Learning the 'very hard' spells is friggin, friggin hard! Sixteen scrolls needed to learn Regeneration. I don't suppose there are any tips you folks can throw me, but I'd appreciate any. I really want that Regeneration spell... Then my blue mana will be good for something.

spells are highly based on luck, it took me forever to learn regen, and then i stopped using it after getting my
dragon spider
mount, but i usually just try to spam spells to reduce my green? mana to low when i see he can use sinkhole on me

and man do i love drong, the conversations with him are uber funny, ESPECIALLY the ogre one haha :applause:

Thanks for putting the spoiler alert there. I'm excited about what it could be! What could be better than the Regeneration spell? Eee, excitement!

And I just brought Drong the last thing he wanted. I can't believe that he
joines your party
, but I was sort of figuring that was the final reward. After all, you spend a lot of game-time bringing him his...lucious meats.

Man, this game rocks.
What is the point of training mounts?
Better skills, like it'll say +1 water mastery and another +1 every three levels - it's talking about the mount.

One of the rumors I got in a tavern said a high level mount would also let you bypass the enemy encounters on the road, but who knows.
That is true. If you run across lower enemies, you can hit cancel at the battle screen and you'll go right through them.
Okay, so if you hit cancel, does the enemy disappear from the road, or is it still there? Just wondering if my Griffon skipped an enemy when I hit cancel or if the enemy happened to move/vanish at that particular time.

Edit: It disappears. Yay! I can bypass some enemies! Hm, now I want to get back to the Citadel to train my mount. I likely that feature a hell of a lot.

Yeah, I trained up my mount to skip all the road encounters. I can't remember how high I got him, but by the end of the game I could skip any encounter.

Dragon Spider was my top choice for mount (very mild spoiler)
extremely useful spell, especially for a wizard.

Game was paced very well for me. Hit level 50 just a few battles before the final showdown. Did every sidequest, fought random battles until I could capture each enemy up until about 2/3rds of the way through the game. (Once I settled on Dragon Spider as my mount and a set of spells that worked for basically any battle I was less interested in capturing.), created a handful of items, and researched a dozen or so spells.

I bought this for all the traveling I did on vacation this past week. It got kind of annoying when I'd do an illegal move because a bump in the road shook my hand. I also couldn't tell the difference between the yellow and green mana when there was lots of sun shining. These were only minor annoyances though, I'm enjoying the game. I'm not addicted like many people have been thankfully.
i beat the game but i still don't have a mount, how the fuck do i get one
impressive, you need to go to any of the cities you've conquered and buy the stable?

yessir, its either the 3rd or 4th time you're allowed to capture them, easiest way is just to go to the fight any monster mode and pick whichever monster you want, beat it 3-4 times and then go back to single player and find one, fyi some monsters can't be trained as mounts, you will only be able to capture their spells

I just got the game and am stuck on the second quest. It's the first quest after fighting the dummy.

I'm playing a wizard and no matter what i do, I can't beat him, and it's getting really fucking annoying.

I'm done with the game. I did enjoy it for a while, but it seems I don't have control when the major battles come in the game. There isn't much true "leveling up" and it seems no matter my effort, it comes down to the sheer random fall of gems. This kind of game can be fun and addicting for a while, but it seems all the same in the end.

after i maxed out my level, it really all came down to being able to lock down my opponent for x # of turns until he was gone

is it just me or is researching the very hard spells, VERY HARD? ive done them sooooo many times and i get so close, then it gets to the point where it says no more moves available. it sucks.

btw, whats the max level? im at 23 right now

another question, do repeat quests ever go away if u do them enough?

50
and no repeat quests will stay there forever, as far as i know

I got really frustrated with the spell research system as well. It was my dream to have the Regeneration spell, but it was impossible for me to learn. I never did get it (or any other very hard spell) before I stopped playing the game.

why is Dugog soooo fucking hard to beat? He pulls off some of the most BS moves, I cant even count how many times Ive tryed to beat him. I dunno if Im doing something wrong, or he is just getting lucky.

EDIT: I finally beat him tonight. The game just got fun again...

I just picked this game up, only got to the second battle so far. I am probably too early in the game but what is the spell research system and how does it work? I see I learn new spells as I level up but is there a way to learn others or are there only certain spells for certain classes?

Question for those about the end of the game. Or maybe near the end of the game. Or a fake ending.

I ran into Lord Bane as a level 35. I'm obviously getting my ass handed to me. Is the idea that I just need to tough this battle out and I should be able to win, or do I need to keep leveling up on other quests?
hmm thats weird, go forge some near godlike or godlike weapons/armour and i would just level up a bit more, i was using a knight and had my level maxed a good chunk before bane, but that was because i had spells to speed up the levelling process

Ah ok. I haven't done much, if any, forging. I guess I'll focus my energy in that direction.

Wizard. I only played Bane twice and didn't get anywhere, so just wondering if it's a matter of my own patience. :)

if you cant beat the final boss

Go into single player mode and then hit EASY MODE

Bane is a cakewalk , i dont think he ever hit me for damage and left alot of combos on the board for me to pick up

I love to see this online

Mrchainsaw, ask yourself this: Is there anyone in your party who might disapprove of you stealing an HEIRLOOM from a DWARF?

Do you value this individual's input?

Also, calling Bane a cakewalk just makes you look silly, slidecage. It is like walking into a Battletoads forum and saying that the Turbo Tunnel was easy as pie. It is an absurd statement. Bane is ridiculously potent. You can beat him easily with a good amount of luck, yes, but call it luck, not that he was easy.

did you try it on Easy mode. It is very very easy to beat him on easy mode. Now on normal mode its a major pain in the ass

Bane doesnt even hit you that much even if he had a chance to hit you. There was a lot of times they left a 4 combo skull but Took 3 gems instead

Now on normal mode i couldnt be him at all but easy mode I beat him the first time
Bane is ridiculously potent. You can beat him easily with a good amount of luck, yes, but call it luck, not that he was easy.
definitely agreed, but it depends how much starting mana and what spells you have, wizards and warriors are by far the strongest class, it takes my knight about 5 turns to get my spell lockdown in, and then i'm doing 35-50 every 3 skulls and stunning the comp for 3 turns in case i mess up while replenishing my mana so i have an infinite loop
I'm sure he does something but I don't notice it. What will the key be good for?
i accidentally said i'd keep it, but i ended up giving it back anyways

I was under the impression that Khalkus would leave if you kept the heirloom. If he didn't, then he probably won't. My mistake.

Just wanted to share this little blurb from the March 2008 EGM. Thought it was amusing enough to share. I don't agree with it, really, as I think the RPG elements are what set the game apart, but still:

The Press Start to Skip: Most Unread Game Award

Puzzle Quest is an addictive RPG where battles are represented in puzzle form. Being sympathetic to the game's writer, making sense of a scene where an Elf and a giant scorpion sit down and decide their fate with a game of Bejeweled is like handing someone a bucket of fish and telling them to invent a new number. So it's understandable that they failed. What's strange is how boringly they did it. I think Puzzle Quest uses the same writers as the phone book. These a**holes couldn't write a stop sign. Luckily, some progressive game-development genius added an option to skip these scenes, none of which are ever more than three letters away from, "A monster appears! Its banter teaches you more about the main sorcerer's castle or cavern. You respond with Bejeweled. Begin!"

Finally picked this up from Goozex. It's definitely damned addictive. I was struggling mightily yesterday, got up to level 7 with a Knight and decided to start over as a warrior. Was having problems finishing guys off, so figured I needed more offensive spells.

Been much better going so far, played for a couple hours today and already passed my progress from last night.

Only gripe would be how the enemies scale to your level....I always hate that. Part fo the fun of leveling up is being able to easily wipe out enemies you struggled with before. Also like that you can make the game has hard or easy as you like when they don't scale by either rushing through or really taking yoru time and leveling up.

Guess other gripe would be the luck portion (i.e. oppenent getting a big chain because of a skull or two falling in the first row at the top after your turn--no way to foresee that). But that's just the nature of these type of puzzlers, so not a big deal.

I haven't gamed much this week due to work and swimming, but when I stopped playing the game this weekend, I had just gotten past Dugog, the first (or one of the first) boss battles. I have a better appreciation for the game these days, as there really is a lot to get into, what with gathering Runes, forging items, capturing monsters to learn their spells. There's so much to get involved in, I really can't imagine finishing the storyline.

Beat it today, took me 4 tries to beat Bane. Was at level 50, but didn't bother much with forging items, researching spells etc. as the puzzles for those were too much of a pain.

I'd give it an 8.0/10. Solid game, but a bit too much luck driven and it should be easier to learn spells from captured enemies and to forge items from runes. Was kind of a bummer to get a ton of runes (got every one I noticed) and catch a lot of enemies and not really get anything for it since the forging and spell researching was so damn tedious.

But the game gets credit for making Bejeweled fun, when I'd never been a fan as it's so shallow compared to Tetris Attack/Planet Puzzle League/whatever else that game's been called.

finished this game off a couple weeks ago. Put A ton of time into it and really enjoyed it. The concept of combining a puzzle game and RPG was genious. Would like to see more games like this.

i think the forging is rightfully difficult because of the sheer power of some of the things you can forge. once you get your weapon and forged items going, it's as bs as any of the chained materia in ff7

Reached Bane this morning. The title of the quest is called Final Battle, so I assume if I beat him the game is over. Problem is, I can't beat him. I've tried at least 10 times so far. I'm level 50, and with my 260 or so HP and his 383HP, it's hard as crap to knock that mountain down.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm just hoping for a battle to go randomly my way, with red skulls galore. It just sucks that his Battle skill is so much higher than mine.

Try working up some money and buying your battle skill up in the church. I can't understand how classes that have a 4pt buy-in for battle skill ups are even playable. Warriors make fuckwin tanks and they get the broken instant-win spell at level 40. I was able to beat Bane without it at level 48 but that shit ain't easy.

If you've got some broken spells, you best use them before his resistance reaches infinite.
