Quake III Arena DS

During the keynote he mentioned that, conceptually, he'd like it to be a game that's more restrictive, limited movement via D-pad like Doom and not "touch controlled" like Metroid Prime Hunters.

thank god, metroid hunters controls were crap-tastic

Long as they keep the MPH cheaters out Im in! Well they have to since Q3A is all about muliplayer. For those of you who didn't play the PC version, you play bots in single player element which is geared towards preparing you for online multiplayer.
To be honest I'm excited though, I would prefer to see Unreal Tournament on the DS.
That would be really cool.

I'm one of the few that liked Hunters' controls, I guess. If you're not going to use the touch screen then why bother putting it on the DS? I can't imagine an enjoyable D-pad controlled FPS.

OMG!!!! Quake III Arena is my most Favourite game OF ALL TIME!!! If this is BS im gonna flip out, oooooo i can't wait for this sh*t

Agreed. Quake is stupid fast-paced.....how is it going to work without the touch screen controls?

I'll withhold judgement for a while. I'd heard Carmack was working with the DS, and if anyone can pull off a kickass 3D engine for that machine, it's him. But I'm very concerned about the "no touch screen" thing... surely the father of modern FPSes doesn't think we can play 16(32?) player deathmatches by aiming with the face buttons??

I liked them just fine myself honestly though I did get tired holding the DS one handed for long periods of time. I though the dpad movement and stylus aiming was a fairly brilliant solution to doing a fps on a handheld it worked better almost than syphon filter on the psp for me.

The controls of Brothers in Arms could work good with this game.
I was playing BiA on the DS for the first time last night. (It was a friends)
And I really liked playing it. The FPS movement worked fine.
Yeah, the controls will probably suck, but hey, MPH controls sucked too.
It's worth a shot
Yeah agreed. MPH was hand-cramp central.

I hear this a lot about MPH. Do you guys all try to beat this in a single seating? Because there wasn't any cramps playing 1-2 hour stretches of this game for me.

Jeez. I've been gaming since I was 5...but even I can't keep my hand in that claw grip for that long and constantly smash on the L trigger and not get a cramp.

I was in the room at QuakeCon was JohnC announced this. While I wish that he could've figured out a way to make the Metroid control scheme work, I have to agree with him that it gets tiring after a bit. He knows his stuff, and if he says it will hurt the game to have that control scheme, then I'll go with it.

John never lets me down when it comes to game feel. If there's anyone that can make a successful FPS on a portable, even if it's "only" 2.5D, it's him.

Right, but he doesn't have to make MPH controls the default. Make it optional for people who's fine with it. I think he's afraid of stylus control guys owning the non-stylus guys thus forcing everyone to use the stylus.

I doubt he's afraid of that. He just personally feels the Metroid controls aren't good enough (even though it sounds like he wishes they were), so he won't use them. And when it comes to things like this, John tends to do what he wants (as is evidenced by taking it upon himself to scrap the Darkness game and develop Rage instead).
