To those who have Wiis, have you guys tried plugging in anything to the USB2 ports? Most notably a external HD?

I know the mouse is kinda pointless but a keyboard would be faster than using the Wiimote to type.

I heard (and put in my FAQ, I think according to SpottedNigel) that the USB ports aren't currently functioning, and that a future firmware update would have to allow that.

This seems logical, as the memory management system doesn't acknowledge the USB ports at all - it's just internal, SD card, and GC memory cards at the moment.

I hope we get more info on this soon as well. I'd really hate to think Nintendo has quietly dropped this functionality. Especially, especially, when there's a group running around trying to get Linux to boot on the Wii. Wii + Linux + external harddrive = most badass media console EVER.

i'm hoping they move sooner than later to get full funcitonality out of this machine. until i'm playing the linux pc version of doom on this machine, it's totally useless ha

The wii has Ass USB functionality. USB Keyboards dont even work for it, and entering crap in with the wiimote is a pain in the ass.

Pretty pitiful considering it's the only next gen console lacking that kind of support.

The Xbox 360 doesn't support USB keyboards. You have to buy a device that allows you to hook up a keyboard and use it.

Seriously, how much text entering are you doing that you need a keyboard on your Wii at this point?

Don't try to apply logic to Zoglog. That's how he gets you into his swirling vortex of stupidity.

Isn't the wireless PC to WII internet connection sharing device a USB device?

If it is, that must mean the USB ports function at SOME level...

The DS USB device plugs into a PC which has internet access. The Wii then connects wirelessly to that USB device.

The Nintendo LAN Adapter, which comes out in January, will use the USB port on the Wii. I would assume a firmware update to enable the USB ports will come out just before this device is available.

Gotcha...I was thinking of it backwards.

Yeah... I know it's a bad idea, but I like the spinning part... it reminds me of when I was at Coney Island...

And what happens after you get off that ride? Corn dog and cotton candy puke everywhere. Gross.

I believe the USB port does charge an ipod. So at least it does something, right?

Chances are that they will enable them whenever the webbrowser is released so we can use keyboards if we'd like. However, Thumbdrives would be awesome if they'd support it.

Wrong, the 360 DOES have USB keyboard support. I just typed a message to a friend with it yesterday, the same as I've been doing for months. All without this magical keyboard enabler device spoken of.
Yes, the USB ports do *something*. Mine is charging my DS right now...
There's a USB charger for the DS Lite?!

I'm pretty sure that ps3+ Linux + external harddrive would be better, and it already exists.

And cost twice as much.

rrriiiiiggggghhhhhhttttttt, and I'll just run out, pay $600 for a unit nobody can get, throw Linux on said $600 system and throw an external hard drive (which again is going to cost) on it.

Wow, that's an excellent idea; now, can I download the VC games to it?

Better yet, maybe, just MAYBE, Nintendo could use this "Wii Connect 24" to upgrade the firmware to support the keyboard .... no, that sounds too cumbersome.

I didn't say it was a DS Lite. ;)

The charger I have came with a cable that has a USB port on one end and a DS Lite port on the other - allowing you to charge via USB. Also included was an adapter that allows you to plug the USB port into a car's cigerette power adapter and a neat little thing that plugs into the DS Lite charger and lets you charge an SP, micro or regular DS. It's a pretty handy charger set.
