Question about Gamecrazy's disc resurfacing/buffing thing.

CAGiversary!
So I got a bad disc here, and I went to Gamecrazy to get it fixed. In addition to the disc behaving exactly like it did before, the disc doesn't look any different.

I mean, it looks exactly like it did when I took it there. All of the scratches are there. I heard that this thing was supposed to get rid of scratches by taking some plastic off of the data side of the disc. The disc doesn't even look any thinner. The scratches still seem to be as high up as they were before. You can see the shadows of the scratches.

So, was this supposed to shave off plastic until the scratches went away? Or was it just a glorified cleaning kit? Because from what I've seen, it's a glorified cleaning kit.

It will only take off very light scratches (like the hair-thin scratches and scuffs)... not the deep ones. It does take off a layer of the plaster but it's an insignificant amount, that's why it can't get rid of any deep scratches.

I think a disc can be resurfaced like 10 times before all of the protective plastic is gone...

Errm, in general a refinishing unit should polish the scratches out(buffs off only a few microns of plastic). You typically won't notice the disk being any thinner, but you should notice a significant difference in the look of the disk. I've had good luck with Wipe Out CD Repair as a home remedy.

As a former GC employee, I can vouch for the quality of the buffing...in the right hands. There's a little bit of a science to it, and each employee has different levels of experience and personal preferences on how to use the machine. If the scratches are deep, than I'm sorry to say your disk may be unfixable. But I've taken ringed 360 discs (deep groove from when you move a 360 with the drive spun up) and managed to get the ring to a fraction of its original size. I also had a guy bring in some old disc that looked like it had been scratched on concrete over and over. And that disc was dead.

DEAD.

I have a bunch of non working DC disks that refuse to boot up, its not the DC becuase I tried several different ones, would you recommend that i ake them and try to get them resurfaced at gamecrazy

What he said..it needs to be done by the right staff member.
I try to only take mine when it's not busy and the manager is there to perform resurfacing. She's the best!
...Some discs she just buffs with the machine and others with more damage are given an extra run with a different resurfacer...
I used to resurface about 20 games a month through gamecrazy, and I can echo the sentiments that it has to be the right person buffing the disc. However, i just ordered a cheap alternative off ebay and so far it's as good, if not better than gamecrazy's model:

Oooo neat, boy that would save some gas!
How long have you had it?
Is it worth the price? or too soon to tell?

I just had them try to repair disk 2 of Valkyrie Profile. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I was looking at the disk earlier today and holding it up to a light. I noticed two very tiny holes that I could seel light shine through. Is there anything I can do about that?

I've had it about two weeks now, i've only done about 20 discs so far. So far I think that it's totally worth it, but only time will tell for sure.

Oh yeah, the consumable supplies last much longer than advertised, so far i've got the 20 discs reparied on only for yellow pads and two white pads. The amount of resurfacing agent that they give you is very small though...i hope that I can order that by itself.
brian, did you try it with the dreamcast games
I don't have any DC games that need fixing right now, when I do I'll let you guys know.
