Question about gamestop

I looked at the list of games to trade for the $20 value and saw the original boom blox. I have the disc in perfect condition(no scratches at all) But when I try to play it, I get the disc read error. I tried 3 other wii's from friends and the same thing. So I thought I try to trade it at gamestop. The policy to get the full $20 credit was it has to be in working order. So I hand a gamestop employee the game with case and instructions. They look at the bottom of the disc, and even there aren't scratches, they knew it a broken disc. They mentioned something about some kind of ring same side where the laser reads the disc. What did they mean? And how did they know the game doesn't work even though there aren't scratches?

btw, it was a real copy that had been working for a year, but stopped.
