Question about portable 360 hard drive

CAGiversary!
This is probably a dumb question, but well. (I did a search here and didn't see anything relevant, so apologies if I've missed an earlier thread.)

I want to take some of my music games to a friend's house, but I want to have access to the DLC I've purchased for the games.

I know I can remove my console's hard drive, but I feel like that's risky. But if I got one of those 512 MB portable drives, I could copy my relevant DLC content onto that and just take that, right? Would I have to transfer my profile, too? Anything else I'd need to make it work?

I can't find a clear answer as to whether the DLC will work if it's running off a portable drive. I feel like it should but want to confirm it before I invest in a drive.

Thanks.

Simplest way is to just move your HDD to your friends. If your using the 512 Memory card, you would have to transfer your account to the card and any DLC you want. Only problem is that the DLC music songs are large files, depending on which songs...I doubt you will be able to fit more than 4 or 5 on there...

Or you can just transfer your account to the memory card and sign into your profile and download the songs onto his harddrive...

Yes, I think it will work on the memory card, but I think you will need to be online with your gamertag on his console because the license of the DLC are tie to your Gamertag and console.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly is 'risky' about moving your hard drive to a friends 360?
When I read how to remove it, there were warning about not touching the connectors and so forth, and while I would certainly be careful, the instructions made it sound really fragile.

And given all the horror stories I've heard about consoles just conking out for no good reason, I really don't want to tempt fate for $20 worth of DLC!

I had no idea DLC songs were so large. If that's the case then, yeah, probably more bother than it's worth. Transferring the account and redownloading sounds like a good method, though. Thanks!

Ah, okay, thanks. I kept reading that the DLC was tied to various user-specific elements but couldn't get a lock on what they were and whether that meant even moving the whole HDD (vs. a portable one) would work.

Trust me, you've got no worries. My hard drive has been to hell and back, and it's till kicking. As long as you don't drop it off an buildings, you should be fine. Transferring it from one 360 to another is no more dangerous than moving your laptop while it's powered off.

Also, DLC songs aren't THAT large. You could fit 20 or so songs on a 512MB memory unit.
