I'm not sure exactly but I've only watched a couple of blu rays on my PS3 and a couple of movies have stored up to 12 mb on there. I imagine if your watching a lot of blu rays those may pile up.

Updates, and also, if you'll notice, some BRs (mostly sony that i've noticed) will preload some content. Pineapple Express and Persopolis come to mind immediately. Also, as stated, BD live. Not to mention the my bookmarks and my scenes features on many discs. HD-DVD drives/players had internal memory as well.
