Questions about buying a new TV

airwavexiii

CAGiversary!
I am looking to buy a flat panel TV about 42 inch. Does anyone know where the best place to find info on these. I was looking at the best buy and dell website but am not sure what to look for. I dont have a fancy entertainment set up and I am just looking for a nice TV for a decent price. Are the Dell models worth looking at? Or are there usually any good deals at certain times of the year? Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You

i'm also looking for a new tv too...not quite that big though because i don't have the room right now...i have a 12% off coupon for BB that I'm planning on using (if it's allowed)...any help would be appreciated by me as well

go to avsforum.com, and read up on all the different options. There are just too many factors, 1080p vs 720p, price, built in tuner, inputs, etc. It really depends what you will be using it for. I also would suggest going to look at a tv specialty store, not bb or cc as they generally don't set them up well ( I have been to a cc where they had a big standout samsung dlp display where everyones face was red because they didn't adjust the levels correctly).

I am in the same market, I am probably going to buy a Westinghouse 42w2 lcd. Reasons, it is 1080p, people have purchased it for around $1550, and has vga inputs for the XBOX 360 (when it gets the 1080p update). Drawbacks, it doesn't have a built in tuner so I will have to use a cable box, which I would use anyways.

I just don't think it is worth spending and extreme amount on an hdtv these days, prices are dropping so fast and technology is changing so rapidly. First and second gen 1080p sets are just coming out, whereas 720p was the top of the line a year or two ago. And every set has its drawbacks, little quirks to work out with the new tech. I think it is better to buy a reasonably priced hdtv now, and buy a bigger tv in a few years when prices and technology stabilize.

How'd you get a 12% off coupon? The last one I got expired on October 9. I'm drooling over a TV that's on sale, but I'm not going to get it unless I can combine it with the 12% off thing.

Thanks so much! The annoying part is that coupon is only good for TVs up to 36", meaning Sony's v2500 that's 40" and 1080p is out.

Hmm... do I go for a 32" 720p s2010, or a v2500? I wonder if 1080p will really matter much on the Playstation 3?

I can't even decide if 32" or 40" is better for my room. When I'm thinking of getting the 40" screen, I always think it'll be too huge. When I'm thinking of getting the 32" screen, I always think it'll be too small :D ARGH!!!!

ARGH!! I just read that too! The TV i'm on the edge of getting is much larger than 36", so I guess using this coupon is out the window. Have they always excluded TV's like that. I never payed attention to that detail since I was never in the market for a TV before now.

I don't remember any size limits-but then I never payed much attention to it either until now.

Size wise where I'm going to set the TV is slightly smaller than the width of the 32" model. It would fit there and look pretty big. The 40" one would look absolutly gigantic and hang clear over the edge...yet 32" looks tiny in the store :(

Quick note of thanks to arthurRWD for posting that coupon link. As a result, I picked up the Westinghouse 32w6 yesterday for $615.

I've only played with it for a few hours so far--but to this point I'm seriously impressed. The picture quality is terrific. It's missing some of the features/menu items of more expensive sets, and the audio from the 2 10W speakers is, as expected, lacking. But the visuals are easily on par with any of the $1500 panels I looked at in my researching.

You're welcome, and I actually got the same set, though I'm thinking of taking it back for the more expensive Samsung 3251D (i think that's right), because:
1) the westinghouse can't zoom correctly on my letterboxed DVD's
2) you have to rescan every time you switch from cable to antenna

relatively small problems, but if I'm spending my money, I want to make sure I'm actually getting the quality that i want.

Yeah, thanks! I used the coupon to get a Sony KDL-32s2010, which I'm pretty darned happy with. It handles blacks and motion really well.

they didn't do this in the past. i bought my Sony 50a10 from BB last year, and used the 12% coupon -- size wasn't one of the restrictions.

They dropped the price of my TV $50 more this week, so I'm going to go tonight to see if I can get it pricematched. The catch is the coupon I used...but I've printed out another copy. I'm hoping, worst case scenario, they'll let me use the "new" coupon and get it for the new price.
