Questions about PS3 Repair

I am about to (finally) buy a PS3 and had a few questions. Let me say I am buying it mostly for the blu ray drive, backwards compatibility and to catch up on a FEW games I've missed out on.

Because backwards compatibility is important to me, I'm going to have to get a 60gb CECHA01 system off of ebay. I understand that even with a good seller, because the system itself is older, it could run into problems at any time.

My questions are as follows.

1. If I have to send it in for repair, the cost is $150, does that cover all repairs? How long will it be under warranty after?
2. Will I get back the same system I send in with bc intact?
3. The 60 gb version is the best as far as bc goes correct?
4. The CECHA01 plays both ps and ps2 games right?
5. Is this a worthwhile investment or should I just buy a newer PS3 and a PS2 slim to go along with it? (Keep in mind on ebay these systems are going for 250-600 right now depending on condition.)
6. Will the new PS2's play original PS games as well?

Lots of questions and I'm all over the place, I know. A simple yes or no answer will do. Thanks for taking the time to help.
 
1. They'll repair it and send it back with a 90 day warranty. Or at least that is how it was when I sent mine in way back when.

2. Not sure about this since when I sent mine in I didn't take care to note serial number before and after I got it back. It took 3 or 4 weeks including shipping time. So it is very likely the same system I sent since it had various updates during the repair phase. This was back in 2007 so it could have likely changed now. With the 60 gb unit being so old and the slim out now, they could very likely be out of replacement parts.

3. Yes, it is the best one to get for BC. Now there can still be some problem but it is the best of the bunch. Personally I haven't encounter anything game breaking but I'm not always playing PS2 games on it, actually I rarely play PS2 games on it.

4. I assume that's the 60gb model number. Either way all PS3 plays PS1 games.

5. Personally if you have room in your entertainment cabinet for both systems, I would go for a new PS3 and PS2. It'll probably cost about the same, but it'll all be new and have their warranty. Also if you wanted to transfer your old ps2 game saves you'll need a memory card adapter which Sony has discontinued.

6. Can't speech from experience but again I would assume it can. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, all of the Playstations can play PS1 games.

A simple yes or no to these questions would have been fine, but you took to the time to go the extra mile and answer each question thoroughly. That is very cool of you, and very much appreciated.
 
I just replaced my 80gig backwards compatible system. I don't know how much a machine off eBay costs, but I'd recommend buying a new slim and a PS2 if you really want to play those games.

I don't know that I could trust a machine off of ebay- I'd have to assume it was reflowed and the guy was just trying to get rid of it before it died again. That said, you are looking at adding another $150 to the top of your purchase price as well as losing whatever save data is on your system at the time.

There are a few new PS3 bundles coming in the next month- the Killzone bundle, and a bundle with 2 Dualshocks.
 
With Sony banning people for modded systems now, I'd never buy a used one. You buy a system that has been banned, and no PSN for you.
 
I'd just buy a new one and a PS2. Actually I have a 60GB BC PS3 and I am planning on selling it to do just that. Mine still works just fine, never had any problems (Haven't really used it all that much, usually play 360.) but the prices it is going for are just too tempting to get a newer system. Also the new one being smaller is nice with me being on travel a lot for work. Mine is a monster.
 
FYI- a friend of mine is getting my dead fat repaired. Sony quoted him $130. I see a lot of reference on these forums to $150. Don't know if that's an outdated price, or he got a deal, or whatever. Just a heads up.
 
1. The cost for Sony to fix a bc fat/launch PS3 is $180, not $150 ($150 is cost for swap from fat bc PS3 to refurb slim non-bc 120gig). And keep in mind if you opt to have Sony fix your bc fat/PS3 (not swap to slim) Sony reserves the right to either fix your console or replace it with a refurb of the same model (Sony's choice not yours). Sony only offers 90 day warranty. The repair or swap is quoted at 4-6 weeks. I know this because of email from Sony CSR & I chose swap option (had a YLOD 60gig bc PS3 fat). My slim arrived exactly 4 weeks after sending in my broken fat.

2. You are NOT guaranteed to get the same console back you sent in, the $180 gets you either your console fixed or a refurb of the same model. Keep in mind any/every console sent to Sony is first reformatted then potentially fixed... you will lose all your console info (game info/saves, music, images, dlc) if console sent to Sony.

3. The best thing for playing PS2 games is a PS2. Slim PS2 console reliability is far better than any of the PS3s (fat or slim). If you want to play PS3 games & PS2 games... & are ok with the cost of PS3 ($300) + a future repair cost ($150-$180)... buy a new slim PS3 ($300, more mem than fat 60gig) + a new slim PS2 ($100) + wireless PS2 controllers ($20-$30 each).

4. All PS3s play PS1 games. Certain PS3s are PS2 bc, by way of PS2 hardware in PS3 or software emulation. I understand the want for bc 60gig fat PS3 (I had similar want), but buying used & assuming repair bills is costly. Rethink why you want, for collectible or to play, if answer is more to play do not buy 60gig used. 2 different independent PS3 repair shops told me that they fix more fat PS3s than slims because the fats are older (more use/abuse) & because the fats run at hotter operating temp.

5. Strongly rec new slim PS3 ($300) & new slim PS2 ($100). If you want to save $$$, buy used slim PS2 from a Gamestop ($60).

6. All PS2s play PS1 games.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If you buy a fat bc 60gig PS3 I will envy you much, except your future repair bills.
 
I have a 60 gig PS3 and have been thinking about upgrading it to one of the slims with a large hard drive.

While I could just upgrade the hard drive, i fear the system dying on me since it is approaching 4 years old now.
 
My 80 gig with backward compatibility has been good going on 3 years. I did have a hard drive get corrupted, but that was my fault as I bumped the eject button on the remote with my knee while a game was saving. I think making sure it gets plenty of air and keeping the dust off of it are huge when it comes to reliability over the years.
