I'm thinking about picking this up to hold me over until NBA2K11, but was wondering if you need one of those dumb EA codes to play online/update rosters?

What? I don't think so, I may be wrong but EA is only starting that this year for the sports games. Previously it was just Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Battlefield that had those VIP codes. Why not just pick up NBA2k10 instead of Live if you're going to get 2K11?

They had the codes in Madden 10 and NCAA Football 10 as well Thongsy.

As for your second question, I've owned NBA2K10 previously, so I figured I'd give Live a shot since I haven't played a Live game in years. If it requires one of those dumb codes though just to get online, I'll probably pass on it.

If you buy it used, you need to buy a code for $10 I think to get the Dynamic DNA, which (since I haven't been playing Live recently,) I don't know if they are still updating. I think you do need the Dynamic DNA to play online though.

NBA Live 10 is all about the online aspect. Offline sucks.

The game requiring a code to even get updates is dumb and a total deal breaker (I'd get the game from Goozex, so the code's likely been used).

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I thought they were just starting that up this year. Especially if it's even just for updated rosters. Might have to reconsider my Madden preorder, just because I really don't like supporting this kind of thing.

I thought the code is only for the Adidas DNA update stuff. I believe you can still play online.

I don't mind it. After all, it isn't like they're making you pay for a code already included with the game. The only way you will is if you buy the game used. Don't let the included VIP code hold you back from deciding if you want the game or not. The decision is still the same. Personally, I didn't see NBA Live '10 get $40 cheaper until Game 5 or 6 of the NBA Finals. I see this trend carrying over towards future installments.

If you ask me, I would put my monies worth on NBA Elite over NBA2K. If this is the year that NBA Elite will pull an NHL '08, by all means, I don't see any harm in putting down the cash for it.
