Actually, I design my avatars as 200x200 size files. I draw, shade, color, etc. at that size. I then compress the size down to 100x100. The reason is that it compacts the colors and the blending of the colors shows quality.
If you actually compare a 100x100 drawn avatar to a shrunk 200x200 avatar, you'd notice the difference.
On the 200x200 avatar I drew of the Tanuki, I had the eyes with red, popping veins to imply craziness and anger.[/quote]
I do mine at around 600dpi, which works out to about 1000x1000, so 10x the final size. Some of the earlier ones were about half that.
