Radio Shack... HOW ARE THEY STILL IN BUSINESS?!?!?

Sinnbox

CAGiversary!
So I went to the local Radio shack today(the one I swore i'd never go to again last year when they told me Zune was obsolete when i was looking for a charger, when i googled it when i got home they had released 3 new colors that day, lol)

I asked if they had a Blu-Ray remote for PS3, the guy took me to the right place and then said that I had done the right thing in purchasing a PS3 because if I had gotten a 360 I would have to pay alot of money to play games. I asked him why and he told me that Microsoft was upgrading it to the Xbox 360 2 and to play any games I would have had to get it upgraded for "alot of Money" I told him that I have 2 360's at home and have never heard of this.... Where do they find their employees???
Sounds like he was trying to sell you an Xbox 360 Slim.
I doubt it, he said i needed to upgrade the chips already in my current 360, Im with the poster that thinks he's a PS3 fanboy...why else say the Zune(another MS) product is no longer made....

because the original zune (pre hd) is no longer made and does not recognize the Zune HD..that and he's an apple fan boy.

This was pre Zune HD, it was the day that several new colors were announced, for the original Zune.
Where else can I get a momentary switch and some .22 gauge wire?
That's the ticket. Even though it's slightly expensive, Radio Shack has worked for me as a quick and easy stop for random electronic parts. I won't buy their LEDs, though.

The one closest to me is going to have a hard time competing with the wal-mart directly in front of it. Couldn't believe they put it there. Their prices are all full MSRP on everything. And I can order my electrical widgets online for a lot less than RS.

the one by me is gone ... i didnt even notice it was gone. when i asked a friend he say it been almost a year since hey closed. i was like WTF

I'm considered a PS3 fanboy, but I love the fuck out of my Zune. I love my Zune more than my 360, tbh. And I've got the original 30 gig Black Zune, too.

I think he's probably very misinformed about the slim model and kinetic. that's the only thing that even makes sense to me.

I wish they still sold single speakers... subwoofers, tweeters and such... sometimes I need a quick replacement speaker.

Last time I was at a Radio Shack they were selling some redneck his first cell phone (and this in the heart of Seattle), and I must have waited in line a half hour... the other clerk was talking to some chick.

The last time I was at RS was 2 years ago when I picked up a DualShock 3 for like $35. Never understand why RS still manages to survive.

Hearing customer service representatives talking out their asses about things they clearly don't know anything about isn't exclusive to Radio Shack. I hear CSRs at Gamestop say things that make no sense all the time, although with them they're just lying to boost their own sales.

Price of a red LED at Radio Shack- $1.49 (I don't know if it;s one or two)

Price of a red LED at Jameco.com- 0.12-0.15 cents each.

That's why they are still in business. I went there today looking for a solderless breadboard and they said they had to return them, to corporate, like wtf.

I'm guessing the RS brand name is somewhat keeping them afloat. They have the niche B&M market of "electronic do-it-yourself" relatively on lock and their cell phone selling business is doing pretty well. (At least at the ones in my area)

Like Indy said, incompetent sales reps are everywhere.

Because I bought a copy of Hot Shots Open Tee 2 from them for 10 bucks back when it was 30-40 bucks.

They're making a stupid decision in trying to move into the Target/WalMart level electronics territory. Those stores are more complete which is why they have skimpy electronics departments. RadioShack's niche is buttraping people through DIY convenience ala Home Depot/Lowe's.

Even CEO Can't Figure Out How Radio Shack Is In Business.

Okay on a more serious note there are several reasons why Radio Shack is still alive:

- Location, location, location. Radio Shack has ten gazillion locations nationwide including key areas that don't have many (if any) options for electronic stores. So in those areas Radio Shack is a kind of god send.... unless if you are willing to drive to somewhere that has any better options. Or god forbid use that crazy thing called the internet to do your shopping which is crazy I know but somehow I would trust Amazon.com over Radio Shack.

- DIY convenience as davo1224 mentioned. Yeah you can get most parts/cables/etc that Radio Shack has cheaper online. Cheaper prices doesn't help however if you need said part right now. Otherwise I'll just hit up Monoprice and wait a few days... and avoid the next thing on my list.....

- Cell phones. Stores make a ton of profit from cell phone sales from activation, accessories, and warranties. So if you never figured until now why you get harassed endlessly when you go to Radio Shack for that cheap part to get a cell phone well now you know. Not that there's not 1,000 other places that one will pass by on the way to Radio Shack that also sell cell phones but this is one of the life bloods that is keeping Radio Shack alive.

Yeah those reasons are why Radio Shack continues to hang around. Personally I'm giving them at least another 1-2 years before either a bigger company (ie: Best Buy, Wal-Mart) buys them out or they completely collapse. Then again I've also been calling for K-Mart's demise for far too many years and that's yet to happen.... and believe me given how awful the last few visits I've made in K-Mart have been I got a feeling it could happen this year.

That's pretty amazing when even the CEO can't figure it out. It's like trying to figure out how AOhelL is still around... I think my dad is single handedly keeping them around. :\

My friend works at Radio Shack, and yup.... it's all about the cell phones. And their abundance of stores, like Demo man said. Because the stores are relaticely small, you can put one just about anywhere. Put one in bumblefuck and there isn't anything in the immediate area to compete with.

^^^ Came here to say this. Also, some people are still internet-illiterate and either don't use the net or don't know how to find stuff properly (like finding monoprice.com and finding what they actually need). So Radio Shack fills that niche because they're still customer service oriented and can provide help, though my experience with their employees are they don't know jack about anything besides cell phones.

There's a science & surplus store next to the Radio Shack I've gone to, and they have loads of random motors, LCD screens, etc, taken from old electronic devices.

Only I ended up having to go to Radio Shack for transistors, because wouldn't you know it, the science store electronics dept. doesn't sell those!

I had been to a target with test kiosks. I really hate kiosks that try to sell you crap when walking past. Makes me not want to shop at the store at all.
The store I was at had the kiosk right next to the cds and dvds like right after you walked in the door. I was looking at dvds and some ass hat interrupted me talking with a friend to ask what cell phones we had. If I wanted a damn cell phone I would have looked at them.
