Rare games worth hundreds???

Fatesealer

CAGiversary!
Holy smokes... I just got off the auctions for Suikoden II and the prices for it are INSANE!!! $100, $150... hell, one person had it up for $500!!! Don't even get me started on the price for just the strategy guide...   I'll be damned if I pay $300 for a $14.99 book. No this isn't a whiny complaint thread (I found Suikoden II a few years back at Funco for $25, mint disc, but no case, but something is better than nothing) nor a 'hay guyz, lets rerelease this a la Final Fantasy Tactics so the resell market will implode' wish either... What's the most that you will or have paid for a socalled 'secret society members only' type of rare game that so few were made back then when no one wanted it, yet everybody wants now?

^^^ What he said.

Sometimes, all it seems to take is someone to say, "It's rare." Then, everyone and their grandmother snatches up every copy they find, regardless of inflated price or actual value.

Hmm... I payed $25 for Suikoden 1 and I think that's the highest I've payed on eBay for a single game. Suiko 2 I got for $20 and SotN for $12, both mint copies, both auctions the highly sought 'parent selling their kid's game collection' auction. They always pop up, it's just waiting for them to do so...
Wasn't there some thread about a Neo Geo game sold for tens of thousands awhile back?
It's bandied about occasionally in threads of this nature. One of the few that can actually be called rare. Last I heard, there are only 4 known carts in existence.

How can that be? Weren't they still making neo geo games for $150 a pop until recently? I saw the new SF game being sold for neo geo not too long ago.

I have the Kings Quest Collection Series which goes from $80-$200 on Ebay depending on the condition and if you have the box/manual, which I do. ;)

It's crazy that people pay so much when they can just pirate the game if they want to play it that badly. I'm assuming it's for collection purposes though, but still insane.

I only very reluctantly pay full retail for really great games. I absolutely refuse to pay anything above retail for any product, no matter what. I don't care, no video game is worth anything over $50, not in my opinion.

Paying $500 for ONE game just blows my mind..... Tell ya what? I have these pants. They're really rare. Only a few were made. They're new, still have the tags on them, and are only a few (15) years out of fashion. But I'm selling them for a lot of money. Just remember, they're rare. Really rare. New though! Because I like you, i'll let you have 'em for $750! $750!!! What a deal! You get these great rare pants that only a select few people have! Think of how cool you'll be! You can finally own these pants you've always wanted!

Sound absurd? So does paying $500 for a game (although congrats to the guy who made out like a freaking bandit with someone's $500). A video game!!! Look i can almost understand maybe $100 or so for something you really want, but damn... come on.

Sorry... long rant.

I can understand the Suikodens because it's an older original game, but what's blowing my mind is these Resident Evil Gamecube ports, one auctions at $172 for used copies of 2 and 3. Yeah I know.

EDIT- Up to $217. These are USED people.

I'm selling my sealed copies of all three ports and it's up to $162 with a day and a half left. Hell, if people are dumb enough to pay these inflated bloated prices for them, I'm more than glad to sell them.

I agree with this guy. Obviously the person buying the game doesn't feel like they are getting ripped off either, otherwise they wouldn't bid in the first place.

i've made SO much $ tracking those down at Gamestops and then re-selling on Ebay
eventually the GStop employees got wise and started hiding them in the back room.

too bad

i managed to get over $200 for a VG copy of Suikoden I and a NM copy of Suikoden II.

I can understand paying a lot. My family used to run a sports card store, so paying $10,000 for a piece of paper with a picture makes sense to me, at least you can play a game. Though right now I'm trying to collect every u.s. released tg 16/duo game. I had a lot of them from when I was younger (many of the 100 plus ones), and have most of them now. But eventually I will have to break down and buy magical chase (2-300) and dynastic hero (2-500) if I ever want to complete my collection. Now paying 400 for a sealed game when the used one is 10 (like ff7) makes no sense to me.
Why buy these games at these prices?
one of the reasons that people pay so much for Suikoden games is that you can save your game from I, then import into II... then even import that save into III... which results in minor changes for the resulting game.

uber geek

but it's uber geeks who have that much to spend on a PS1 game

what else are they gonna spend it on?

girls?

Haha. ok point conceded!

Maybe I'm just a cheapass, but never would I pay over retail for games. I guess as long as the buyer is happy and they think is worth it, that's all that matter...

I got my copy of Suikoden 2 complete at EB a couple years ago for about $40, but I'm not going to sell becuase it's a great game. On the other hand, I have been able to find copies of RE2/3 for about $25 each and have no problem selling them, since they are ports. I bought a copy of MGS: Substance for PS2 complete last night @ EB for $18 AC, but I will probably keep it seeing as how it is also a great game.

well, i used to have the entire RE GC collection, up until yesterday...(gonna wait for a price drop), but didn't think it was 'rare.' just something i had, before insane market prices shot up.

as defender once put it, you're just making someone 'else' rich.

btw, are those pants 'rare' levi's??

I'm the one who started that thread over here. The game did sell for around 10,000 - 12,000 USD on eBay with a Buy-it-now if I remember. However, I don't think that is what the final price payed for the game was.. There are only a few (2-4) known to exist carts available that are legit. Many of those Neo Geo collectors have loads of cash and are willing to spend what it takes to complete their collection.

Seriously, I'm amazed that some people are amazed by the $100 price on Suikoden. That's nothing in the market. Flintstone: Surprise at Dinosuar Peak on the NES just hit $250 last week. Spiderman on the 32X hits around $175. There are countless others that are worth far more. A $100 isn't that bad comparitively.

I remember how shocked I was a year or so ago looking at 32x games and noticed spiderman was worth money, and they remembering I bought one at sears on clearance when I first got my 32x. Went and found it and everything was still mint. Though now I gotta check to see if I have flintstones, there's a good chance I do considering how many nes games I have and don't know about, but I'm not sure.
