since people thought Doom 3 and RE4 were too different to compare, what about these two games rated almost exactly the same at gamerankings?

God of War looks amazing, but I don't have a PS2 and buying the system, mem card, etc, plus game is pretty spendy when you're going to school, but I do have a GC and RE4. Am I really missing out on all that much?

Personally I think GOd of War is overrated. I mean its lots of fun, and the graphics are amazing, and basically its an awesome game... However, I just don't see that much difference between POP and it. It just seems like the gameplay is all but unique. My other gripe is the presentation, ie the menues and healthbar, look extremely tacked on.

As for RE I don't own it so I can't rate it.

I don't think your missing that much by not buying a ps2
You are considering buying an entire system to play one game? Leave this site immediately.
Of course not. There are plenty of PS2 games I'd like to play (most of them real cheap by now), but not enough to invest in a system for. This might just be what it takes to tip the scales. maybe.

I played the demo of GOW. It was a lot of fun. It could probably be beaten in a rental period though.

I played both games and frankly I just can't decide which one is better. They are both great games. As far as buying a PS2 just to play God of War I would say no way.

So basically your question is less "RE4 vs God of War" and more "should I get a PS2 to play God of War." You own RE4 and a GameCube, comparing RE4 and GoW is moot.

I'll indulge the thread title, even though that is not what you point to with the OP.

I've played through both games -- which, by the way, might be the only two games I've played to completion thus far this year -- and both were really fun. RE4 was better overall. Longer, more involving, more varied, and better replay value.

Should you play GoW? Absolutely. I finished it in a little over two sittings (~8 hours in total) and enjoyed it immensely. Would I choose it over RE? No.

I too would have to agree with the above post.

I love God of War but RE4 is really definitely game of the year. It's more engrossing, it's longer, the story is a lil better and it's just overall a little bit more polished.

Of course, God of War is a fantastic game! My only complaint is that the menus look a little tacked on and cheesy. But, come on, that's menus and doesn't have to do anything with actually playing the game.

But I'd buy a PS2 for it (and get a ton of other quality games too!)

They're both amazing games for amazing systems.

I loved both games but I'd give the edge to God of War for having some of the best gameplay and design ever in videogame. That said the game is going nowhere (it will never be rare or hard to find) so if your strapped for cash just wait until the end of the year when both the game and ps2 console will hopefully see a price drop.

God of War wins because RE4 is getting tired of all these heads up matches. It can't take on the whole world you know, it needs a vacation.

I have Re:4 and Gow and IMO Re:4 is better. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Gow but it was rather short and you could definately beat it on a rental. Gow had great graphics, music and great gameplay. It's definately a good game game but I also believe the scores it recieved were a little high.

Re:4 on the other hand would win this vote. It was a great 22-24 hour game. Gow only about 10-12 on regular mode. I still play Re:4 but haven't touched Gow once I beat it. If you get a Ps2, definately try Gow, just not maybe at full price.

Yeah, I'll probably be doing just that.

I realize that my OP was really two questions, but the reasoning behind that was that I'm tired of people saying that you should go out and buy a Cube just for RE4. It was a good game, but not THAT good. Just wondered if GoW faired any better, or was also just a bunch of hyperbole. Plus they did look pretty similar in a lot of ways.

Let me put it this way,get yourself a ps2 get god of war ,and sit back and enjoy:)...Oh yeah, you really can't compare RE 4 to GOW(they are diffrent in game play to really compare, both do kick some serious ass though!).. Both are maybe the best games to come out for the year(this gen?). and possibly their respected systems...

RE 4 and GOW are the ONLY games I have bought 1st day out.(RE4 LE ,GOW Media play price matchW/trade in at EB) I am normally too much of a cheapass to spend that much on games. But these two were/are worth it!

Is GoW really that great a game? I mean I've got a half dozen action adventure games like both Maximos, Mark of Kri, Rygar, etc... that it seems are very much like this game. Is it just another to add to that pile or is it somehow better?

As for RE4 it's another survival horror game (admittedly a very good one) that you're comparing to a action adventure like GoW. It's another Apples and Oranges issue. which do you want to play? Pick it and play.

Yes,it is THAT good.I think the reason why is because it is SO polished.

I have both, and both were great games!

Although admittely I was expecting a bit more out of God of War--I still consider it a rare gem in gaming nowadays--with companies producing mostly crap games --this one came out of left field it seems to capture everyones attention.

One thing to note is that while playing through God of War I didn't get the same feeling as I did playing through RE4. It felt somewhat familiar, as opposed to RE4--which was new, innovative, and just a representation of what video games should be.

God of War was great, but not groundbreaking. This is where RE4 I think comes out on top...it really breathes new life into the series, as well as the genre. Not to mention, this game was just the shot in the arm the cube needed.

Sure you can compare these two titles - based on their overall value, and imagin' if you only have 55 bux which game would you buy? (Having both system, or course)

I would pick RE4 over anything right now on the market. It's just an incrediblly awesome game. I would say this over and over again not because I am already an series fan, but looking at technical stand point and GC's hardware ability.... RE4 really raised the game standard of survivor horror/action adventure... whatever you wish to call it. Overall presentation is highest level, level design, story (weakest point i think, a little generic).
I don't know what other game can suprise me at this point, maybe Zelda, I don't know. If you have GC, you must play RE4. Even you are not a RE series fan, you must play RE4. IF you are not a gamer at all (like my sister).. .at least you can watch someone play... because it's even fun to watch.

On the other hand, GOW is the first game since I own a ps2 that makes me say... "wow". It's another great game with excellent level design, enemy setting, decent story, but there are more "flaws" and "generic" side to this game, compare to RE4 which you can hardly find anything to compare it to. (Closest one I can think of? cold fear and it doesn't stand a chance)

I would give RE4 a 9.8, GOW maybe 9.4.

RE4 was awesome...God of War was good but nothing like RE4.

I have beaten both and God of War was definitely shorter than RE4.

Like an earlier post, you can beat GoW during a rental period.

God of War is good, but I definitely wouldn't buy a PS2 soley because of it. When it all comes down to it, it's still the same Devil May Cry type button mashing. Not that that's such a horrible thing or anything - I just don't think that the game, while good, deserves the "BESt GAEM EVAR!1!!!!1111111" type reviews it's been getting. I haven't beaten it yet, but I hear it's on the short side, too.

As for RE4, I'm not even a fan of survival horror games, but I've played it a good amount (my brother has it), and I was really impressed. I can't imagine any Resident Evil fan liking God of War better than RE4.

dont buy a ps2 just for god of war...but buy a ps2 anyway and buy god of war and the other 50 must own titles on the ps2

or just wait til the backwards compatible ps3 comes out and buy that or buy the ps2 then, because it will be cheaper...though the games will probably be harder to come by, for cheap at least

These two games are the top contenders for my game of the year. I loved RE 4's graphics and gameplay, plus the fact that it was such a long adventure.

However I loved the style, gameplay, music and graphics of God of War so much that I really just can't decide between the two. As for buying a ps2 just for God of War, I know people who have and they have not been disappointed with the decision. Probably the main reason to buy a ps2 is the game library, and God of War is one of the best ps2 games ever made.

I liked RE 4 the first time I played through it then, however, when I played through it again it just seemed really boring. I did try pro run and beat it, as well as Mercenaries and Assignment Ada it just didn't have much replay after the first story mode completion.

The OP responds:

The other day I my PS2 owning friend and I rented God of War and we spent 7 hours playing it, taking turns with the controller. I saw the first half of the game (up until the desert), and would have to say that God of War is indeed better than RE4. The creative, sadistic deaths (notably of the hydra) as well as the designer's having the balls to slaughter a bunch of women on screen give it the edge in shock value, plus the gameplay was top notch. The combat system was complex, but with a gentle enough learning curve that it was never overbearing. I also really dug the visual design and presentation of the game. The only knock against it I could think of is that it's an extremely linear game without a whole lot of replay value.

I'm still glad I bought a GC over a PS2, but my PS2 owning friends have won this round. Now where's Zelda?

Responding to my own comments above:

I've had a change of heart on the matter. I saw another few hours of God of War, and quite frankly, the combat (i.e. gameplay) gets a bit stale after awhile. Maybe because I was playing on hard, but enemies took a ton of hits, and I don't mind hard games, but some of the combat just got boring after awhile. And the minotours suck, because I am unable to perform that rapid button mashing thing with the circle button for a finishing move (am I alone in this?)

As far as aethsetics go, God of War wins hands down. I loved the variety of environments, textures, enemies, etc. But after awhile I found myself propelled only to go on to see what new places lay ahead. Now some people may say that that's a sign of a great game, but nifty graphics and art design do not make a great game. God of War made me realize how easily duped we are these days into buying into games that look like cool movies, regardless of gameplay.

God of War's combat isn't horrible or anything, but it just gets stale, which is bad since it's about 95% of the game. I still say God of War is a good game, but not a great one. After seeing about two-thirds of the game I have no desire to replay it again for quite some time. worth a rental, but not as good as it looks.

RE4 wasn't exactly the second coming of Christ either, but it had more variety in its combat scenerios. The variety of enemies was less, but the area design in which you face these enemies totally changes how you deal with them, where as God of War was the same old thing against a bunch of pretty backdrops. So all in all I change my vote to RE 4.

But don't feel bad about the PS2; Okami looks to be the best game at E3. Yes, even better than Zelda.
