I was so damn happy to get this demo-that i went all out.. And zombified myself.

I just went to pick up my copy of kingdom hearts: COM at ebgames, when the guy checking my order just blurted out, 'RE4 preorder!? Dude, youve got to have this!' and yanked out 2 copies of the preview disc and tossed 'em into my bag. I had no idea these things were even out.

Honestly, this game really blew away all my expectations, even the highest Id set.

The demo is short, about 20 min if you blast through it, but i mustve replayed it around 15-20 times just to see all the different things I could do.

(DEMO SPOILER)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pretty much, Leon is driven to the outskirts of a village by some dudes, 6 years after the original accident. Hes been sent to get the presidents daughter.
I noticed from the first encounter that its all SPanish. The first guy you meet says to you in a harsh tone- "Get the shaq fu out of here, or Ill kill you, you bastard!" He picks up an axe, and thats when you get to start killing enemies. First thing i noticed, locational damage. When some more enemies came in a truck, i ran up stairs and jumped out of the window(just one of the things you can do).
You can kill these guys in a variety of ways. Youre first equipped with a pistol with laser sight, and a knife, plus a med spray.
You can knife their kneecaps and cripple them so you can take them down. Blow their heads out with the handgun--(with a nice brain splattering explosion), shoot them in the arms to make them drop their weapons. You can shoot them in the face and watch them scream in pain. So much already. While youre attacking them, in case they get too close, you can activate a melee attack(roundhouse kick) and send everyone around you flying
And these guys arent easy to kill, they flank you, approach from different sides, jump through windows to get to you, break down doors.. and more.
After just that scene, you move on-the main event is the town, with a crapload of different types of areas. When you approach it, I did a recon with the binoculars, and noticed that all the villagers were just going about, doing their own thing. SOme guys were raking up hay, others picking up buckets of water, another one or two carrying stuff back and forth. In a very natural, awesomely animated manner. Until they spot you, that is.
I tried sneaking around a couple of times, but its jjust inevitable, youll always get noticed. And when that happens, all hell breaks loose. The guys drop their stuff and start chasing you down, each armed with what they were using. Scythes, pitchforks. Just awesome. AMong the awesome things I figured out you could do was when you enter a house with a desk, or cabinet that you can push in front of the door.
But thats not all. While theyre banging away, you can shoot portions out of the door and shoot at the enemies behind them. They always find their way in. And in this Resident evil, they attack you in hordes of up to 20+ at a time. WHich made for some awesome moments.
The BEST part of the demo by far is when you enter one of the central houses close to the square, which triggers a siege on your location, including a leatherface lookalike with a chainsaw. You get in, barricade the door, and the small video demonstrates enemies coming in from alll sides, putting up ladders, banging at the loose planks on a window close by.
In one instance, I thought it would be easy to just shoot through the door, but the minute i looked to the right, about 15 guys were in the house..Approaching me. I seriously screamed that moment. I got murdered very, very fast.
When i retried the scenario, there was just a million ways to approach the situation.
As well, on the second floor, you got access to some awesome weapons. The shotgun, and the hand grenade.
(there are incendiary grenades and flash grenades in the demo too)
-You could barricade both doors and shoot at the guys who were getting in from the second floor while your barricades resisted. (if leatherface is up front, he chainsaws right through the door)
-You could go upstairs, knock down the ladders, and try to hold out from the hordes coming in from downstairs.
-You could jump through the window on the second floor and take the fight to the roof.
-Create a firewall with the incendiary grenades and attempt a take down
-you could simply jump out and try to retreat to a more strategic location to take them down
ANd theres probably more you could do. And im talking, 20 minutes into the damn game.
The demo finishes off after you kill leather face-He takes ALOT of lead to put down. The enemies keep coming for the whole time(or at least for all i know)
Among the most crazy moments was when i was getting overrun with those dudes. In one instance, a zombie grabbed me from behind, and leatherface came and DECAPITATED LEON! Gory as hell.
In another instance, getting grabbed by the enemy folk-they literally pick you up and slam you into the ground with a powerful overhead throw.
Enemies also threw their damn weapons at leon! It was bloody insane! The guys with the scythe once got me with a well placed throw and put me down in an instant.
Enemies place traps now. In an instance, i got caught in beartraps. As well, they set easily noticeable trip bombs, which I successfully used back on the enemy when they tried to pursue me. (leon covers up his face when those bombs go off...realistic animation!)
In the main town, there was also a tower. thinking i could get away with just sniping at them. I was VERY wrong. They huddled up at the bottom of the building where i couldnt aim at them, and hurled molotov cocktails at my location till i freaked and climbed back down..To TOTAL rapeage.
I mean, the AI is so damn good its ridiculous.
The graphics are FANTASTIC. Everything is rendered in the most convincing manner possible. This is stuff you still havent seen on any system.
From all the absolutely flawless models, to the insanely well done animation, to the environments, to the special effects, reflections, particle effects. Its just perfect.
The only quibble one might have is with getting used to the new angle. But after just a couple of minutes, it was just easy as crap. Just so damn natural to play.
This game will probably be the next big thing for survival horror-and will probably up the standard for console videogames. I havent felt this excited in years for a bloody game.
Shaq-fuing A capcom! Finally a worthy RE sequel! :D
And the gamecube will DEFINITELY no longer be for kids. :D
There's a demo topic.. i think its the same demo thats on the GC kiosk at EB's.. it's awesome. Makes me wish I had a cube.
I played this demo about 5 times yesterday. Can anyone tell me if you can kill the "chainsaw guy"? I must have unloaded 5 shot gun blasts into him and he was still ticking. Maybe you can kill him with the hand grenade? I dunno, just looking for some feedback. This demo kicks your ass!!!!
The game was near the bottom of my "to see" list at E3; I'd grown very tired of the series and didn't figure I'd care much to see the latest entry. Boy, was I wrong. I spent an entire half of a day just playing that demo at the expo. Ever since I came back from E3, I've been telling all my friends about RE4. Nobody believed me when I told them that RE had changed, seriously changed, for the better. Well, now I can wave this public-release demo in their faces and say "I told you so." I think this has to be a lock for GOTY nominations across the board. I'll be surprised if the game ends up anything less.
It's funny that your "only quibble" initally was with the new perspective angle. I loved it immediately. You're right, it does feel very natural to play the game from that angle. In fact, it feels so close to a first-person perspective that I found myself cursing at the game for not allowing me to strafe. (And that would be my gripe with the game's control.)
where is said chainsaw guy? i never even encountered him...
Is that possible? You can even fight the guy twice in one demo playthrough!
OP, yes, you can kill the Chainsaw Guy, but he's one tough mutha. Your best bet is to use a grenade on him, and even then he'll still need a few more shots to go down.
You encounter him when you go into the 2 story house. You will know because you will see a cut scene where all of the town people are trying to break into the house you are in. I will try the grenade, but your right, HE IS ONE TOUGH MOTHER. :D
I was never too intrigued by RE games before, but I tried the demo yesterday and I gotta say that it's pretty damn good. I'm definitely looking forward to RE4. But I personally think that I suck too much skillwise to beat the game, lol
i might just pay $5 for the demo..but i wanted to preorder at gamestop cuz of the le ...they dont have the demo im asuuming??
Gamestop carries them gyver
Just got off the phone with them and they told me I could come and pick mine up
So how can I get a RE4 demo from ebgames? Will I get it when I buy something from eb (b&m)? I used to get free demo when I order from ebgames.com
Oy I can't tell you how true that is... I found myself desperatly wishing for a strafe feature when the villagers would close in... it's honestly the only complaint I have thus far but it's the kinda thing you can work around, it just forces you to play smrater, using more strategy and better aiming techniques to keep yourself out of a messy situation, instead of blasting your way through the game.
I pre-ordered and he looked up my pre-order before giving me the disc
I played it at gamecrazy. I just can't believe that they still have those weird controls in which you have to hold up at all times to move foward and pressing down will turn you around. I also hate that the b button is to run.
I thought that they were going to change the controls but from what I seen in the demo, the controls are still mediocre just like the previous parts.
best part of the demo is letting a zombie grab you after he has taken some damage, then struggling out of it, to kick the zombie in the head and decapitate him
I don't like them.... the people in this topic do.... why ddi you have to say anything?
Eclipse, WTF is up with your eyes? you should really get that checked out....
I think thats what happens when you leave you laptop on your lap for too long
Awesome, this is a good reason to reserve it. I'll have to go on Monday and get me a demo. Whats in the special edition anyway?
it has a metallic case, comes with the movie soundtracks and a lithograph (I think)
Played this demo many times now...fucking incredible! The one thing that was a little frustrating to me was seeing the laser sight, but that is becuase I am legally blind, and was playing in a well-lit room. When I own the game, I will play it in the dark, and should have no problems. (All RE games should be played in the dark.)
Don't forget the artbook, too.
While the controls are still fundamentally the same, the new perspective changes things. The controls were previously character-relative, i.e. up always moves the character forward in the direction he/she is facing, as opposed to screen-relative, i.e. up always moves the character toward the horizon of the direction the camera is facing. With the new perspective, the character's line of sight and the camera's line of sight are one and the same. That's a dramatic improvement to me.
Thats pretty cool you got 2 OP. I didn't like Resident Evil 1 for Gamecube, but I hope to try this demo out sometime to see if I like RE4 better then RE.
i didnt like RE1 either as much or Zero because they were too much the same as the first one..But man, im sure youre going to love how different it feels and plays Kaijufan.
Picked this up today at EBgames when I bought one of those 5 dollar games mentioned in the other thread. I can't wait until tomorrow when I am sober enough to play it.
How could anyone not like the REmake? That has to be one of my favorite games of this generation. The crimsons, Lisa Trevor, the amazing graphics, all add up to an amazing experience
i just ran to the right after fighting a couple guys by the fire and fended them off until the zombie church bells rang and they left...
That's what has been happening to me. Does this always happen after a certain amount of time? Maybe it is the way of the demo coming to an end. Or you think that is what happens in the real version and then you have to investigate further to move on?
I met chainsaw mask guy once but I wasn't even in the house just walking along trying to look at some stuff. I hear some chainsaw noises, turn around, see some ugly ass masked guy with a chainsaw, and next thing I know my head is rolling down the street. fucking awesome!
That's incredible. Thanks for the in-depth review. I can't wait to have this game. Part 2 was my favorite and I always liked Leon.
I hate you
on topic though, I have played it over and over and I must say it is definatley heading the right way with all the things they improved. I have had this preordered for awhile now and went a few days ago and changed my pre order to the special edition and got the demo. Its awesome how smart the villagers are with them throwing molotov cocktails at you when you are up in the tower thing.......oh well it will be out soon enough. I hope Gamestop goes with the Jan 11 release date and not a day or two after. that would kill me.
It's true. He talks about it non-stop alllll daaay long.
Although I haven't played the RE:4 demo, I do plan on buying it. The head explosions are awesome.
I'm going to ask EBgames if I can have the demo to see what the games like before preordering, because I don't know if I really want it yet.
There is a chance they will give it to you depending how nice the employees are, and if they don't just pre order it. I say the demo is worth the 5 bucks besides you could always get a refund....
