Really Good Screen Protectors.

The best screen protectors out there for the ds are the ones that they put on the demo stations. ITs a shame they don't sell them in public stores. I guess you could take them from the demo, but I wish you could buy them.

Does anyone know where I can find these online?

You should really try the new HORI DS lite screen protectors. Once properly applied they are hardly noticable. Highly recommended by just about anyone on here - you can find them on ebay / play-asia / etc. - You can also call these guys @ japanvideogames.com and order it directly (they ship from LA) I bought one it came next day.
Any B&M stores have the Hori protectors?
Unlike for the PSP (where EB Games had them in-store) - I haven't found these @ B&M stores yet.

Are the ones they do have at EB, etc B&M stores pretty much crap?

Looks like you can get the Hori protector for about $9 shipped off eBay, does japanvideogames.com beat that?

gaelan have you used the shieldzone ones for a DS?

And one more really stupid question - Do you need a protector specific for a lite or regular DS or do they have the same size screens, etc. so they should be universal?

Think I might just pull the trigger on a Hori protector off eBay.

Beware, the Hori screen protectors for the DS DOES NOT perfectly fit the DS Lite. I think you will have to go out of your way to find the Hori ones specifically made for the Lite

I got the Hori from Decalgirl.com (great price. $8.50 shipped). They are the US distributed ones with all english instructions. Putting on the touch screen protector, there is a 1.5 mm gap on all sides if you center it perfectly. This is Just barely enough to cover all the pixels on the screen. I havent tried these on a regular DS, so im not sure how snug its spose to fit on the screen, but i would imagine it would have a more exact fit.

The protector for the top screen is oversized for the DS Lite. You would have to trim about half a cm off the top to fit the Lite. This is because the original DS has bigger borders around the bottom and top of the screen.

Quality-wise, i am completely happy with the protectors, i just wish fitment was better. I went with this because everyone has been saying that DS protectors will fit the DS Lite ones because of the same size screen. Now I know that this isn't 100% correct. The same viewable size, yes. The screen cover, not the same size.

Thanks for that info, very helpful.

I went ahead and ordered from decalgirl.com They have the lite screen on their site now (http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/4,4322.htm)

Did a quick Google search and found code GIMME10, which gave me 10% off, not much w/ a small thing like this but why not?

$8.30 shipped, and I like that it will be English instructions, etc.

Only knock on them at Resellerratings was their delivery time. So hopefully they get it to me in their delivery window of 2 weeks.

Same here.:applause:

Thanks for the link. I ordered the protectors and the retro skin for the DS. Hawt!

CAG is causing me to hemorrhage money :bouncy:

I currently have a set of original hori ds protectors on my ds lite, and they seem to work fine. Picked em up from ebgames a while ago, they should still have them. BtW, are the ds lite screens any better than the ds screens? The top is too big and the bottom is a bit too small when i use the protectors for the original ds.

I have the Martin Field screen protector on my DS Lite. They sell a set for the DS and DS Lite. The package comes with a top and bottom screen protector, but I don't see the point to the top screen. I don't ever touch it, so why bother? I'll just save the top screen protector and trim it down if I ever need to replace the bottom screen protector. Here's the link:
http://www.overlayplus.com/US/modeldevice.asp?category=Nintendo

As for the protector itself, it's wonderful. The backing is ever so slightly tacky so that it sticks to the screen, but not sticky enough to leave residue or to be a bitch to remove. The protector is also absolutely crystal clear. I used to use plain old vinyl when I had my original DS, and it is nowhere as clear as the Martin Field. The Martin Field also is very slick, so there is no stylus drag like you would get with vinyl. Once you get it on, you can't even tell that it's there.

However, since I've only just got it on, I don't know what kind of longevity it has. You can remove and wash it, and some reviews say that they last just as long and probably longer than any other protector out there.

My only complaint is that it can be a pain to put on without getting dust or air trapped under it. You can use a piece of tape to lift it off at one corner and, using the same piece of tape, to remove any trapped dust on the underside, or to set it down properly to remove the air. I had to do this a few times and I guess that in bending the protector several times, that the extreme left edge of the protector doesn't sit flush on the screen. You can't notice it when the unit is on, and it doesn't seem to affect the touch screen sensitivity.

Another problem is that it is a bit more expensive than the Hori screen protectors. I bought a set for my DS Lite and another for my nephew's DS, and the total ($12.99 for each plus quick shipping) came out to $31.

Overall, I really like it. It's crystal clear, no noticeable stylus drag, and it's supposed to last a really long time. Just beware that it can be a bit of a job to put on without getting air or dust underneath, and it is a bit more expensive than other similar products. I would recommend it to anyone, but if you can't afford one, I suppose that plain vinyl is better than no protector at all.

Thanks for the thread. I'm going to order the Hori for my DS lite. I didn't care about my regular DS's screen but the lite is so pretty.

Hori protector from decalgirl shipped today. Ordered Sat - shipped Tuesday, not bad at all. They shipped 1st class mail, I assumed it would be that as you're talking a postage cost of less than $1 with that method. Hope it arrives by this weekend.
Decalgirl.com is showing the fat DS ones out of stock. Any other places to get these in English?

Dane.
I was on estarland's site last night and they still had them in stock.

I actually picked up a few of the Hori ones for the original DS from Rhino Video games (smaller chain, but nationwide) for 6.50 each. The top screen protector is a little bigger than the screen on the lite (the original DS had more "glass" over its screen than the lite), but they work fine and don't bother me that much. I actually transferred the old protectors from my fat DS and put em on my lite.

I've bought Hori DS (fat) protectors at EB once, but I don't think they carry them anymore. Best bet is that Decalgirl link that someone posted up there.

Just curious, why go through decalgirl when play-asia has them for $8.39 shipped? Yeah not much price diff but does play-asia have a bad rep?

Decalgirl has English packaging and ships from DE. (Thanks espy605)

If play-asia has the same going for it, then yeah no real reason to use one over the other. PA is probably a bit more efficient I'd guess, as it's a larger operation.

Anyone know which Protector goes where? Is the red for the top or bottom? Is the White for the top or bottom. Please help. Thanks.

Thanks Dude! Got it on and they look amazing! When getting the bottom protector on I put it on and lifted it up to make sure it was perfect and there was what looked like Oil residue on the screen. I say O well since I will probably never take these protectors off in the first place so why worry.

I got the hori protector and the multi pouch from play-asia, i have nothing to complain. Only thing is, if you order hori protector alone and use the cheapest shipping (just a bubble wrap envelope), i am not sure if the protector would be delivered in good shape.

Mine came fine from Play Asia in a bubble mailer.

I won two auctions on ebay for the Hori DS Lite protectors. Anyone try to use those to cover the older style DS? Results?

How's the Multi-pouch? I was checking it out yesterday, need a case for my Lite.

Anyone having trouble getting the Hori's on without a ton of dust specs/bubbles might want to try what I did if you're out of options.

Before I say anything, just wanted to mention that I've only done this with the bottom screen original Hori DS protector on my touch screen on my Lite. I thoroughly washed the part that gets applied to the screen before first use since I didn't want to risk adhesive (even though, for the most part, I heard it was safe.) some people might want to try this with the Lite's DS protectors that haven't had such a good reputation...

-After reading many reports on this. I figured I'd do this in the place that I could think of with the least dust. My shower that has a door seemed like the most likely place for little dust. Just something you might want to think about, since I don't think I did this with very much dust around at all. still was an issue for a long time, though.

-Wash the Hori protector, and rub it while washing- to get rid of all the dust and such. I used my finger to rub it, but it's probably better for the protector to use something else... I'm not sure if towels/paper towels/tissues are a good idea since they shead small particles sometimes.

-Immediatley after washing dry the protector between two pieces of paper. Lift and replace the protector back down until it's dry/not very wet (a little bit of wetness didn't seem to hurt me DSL when being directly applied to the screen). As long as you didn't expose the protector to air that much it shouldn't get much dust.

-What I used for the final part is a..uhh..I think they're just called rollers. Those things you use on clothes to remove dust. we happened to have one that used adhesive to remove dust, I don't know if they're all like the one we have. But I used one that was sticky and could have parts of it rolled and torn off to get a clean side. I used the roller on the bottom side of the protector and applied it immediatley after. By doing this I got the best results I had in my ...hours :\... of trying. I ended up having two tiny pieces of dust in the corners, who's bubbles I flattened with pressue from the stylus.

So it looks pretty good (considering I washed and messed around with it a hundred times.) when my games are off, and i can't even really notice it on there when my DS-L is on.

I hope this helps SOMEONE, but I'm no expert on the roller things. Some might leave more adhesive on the screen after being rolled. Mine didn't, it had a roughness as if adhesive has been on it. But it was hardly anything...

And yes, the bottom screen has a gap of extra room about the side of the stylus point. It's better to center it in the middle as best as you can.

The Hori DS lite protectors I ordered from decalgirl arrived today. They ship them in a light cardboard box. Happy with the turn-around. Ordered Saturday and they arrived Friday.

I can respect Porygon's mania about cleaning the protector, but I just trusted the product and applied it as the instructions indicated (no pre-washing on the protectors for me.) I truly think the negative reports are from people applying the backing film to their bottom screen and not the actual protector.

Anyway, I found it pretty easy to apply, the hardest part was getting the screens perfectly clean and smudge free before applying. My system:

1) Setup by a window so I'd have natural light - the better to see any smudges or little particles of dust on the screens. Should be a no brainer, but also wash and dry your hands really well before starting.

2) Used a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to do a first pass cleaning of each screen.

3) Used the included cloth to finish the cleaning and remove any smears or smudges.

4) Peeled off the protector as per the instructions and immediately applied to the top screen. Repeated for the bottom screen.

Entire process took maybe 10 minutes. And yes the bottom protector leaves a border of uncovered screen. Not really sure why they sized it like that.

I had a bit of smutz (suspected cat hair) under an edge of the top protector and used a small piece of packing tape to peel it back and remove. Worked very easily and no residue was on the top screen. Didn't have to peel back the bottom screen, but I did set a corner down and then pick it up 1 or 2 times before it was positioned perfectly and didn't notice any residue from those (brief) touches.

Honestly I'd imagine residue would come up rather easily with rubbing alcohol anyway.

Only been on for 5 or so hours but assuming they don't degrade rapidly I'm very happy with them. Can't tell they're on at all unless you know they are there and are looking for the edges. Touch screen works as well as it did for me as far as I can tell. I recalibrated after applying for the heck of it, but doubt that was really needed.

Just got my DS Lite protector today also from Decalgirl.

I had previoiusly ordered the Hori DS phat screen protector and have had them on for about 2 weeks (only the touch screen). It didnt fit my DS Lite screen perfectly. When i took the the DS Phat protector off, there is a slight residue. Not the sticky kind but thin smudges of silicon that can easily be wiped off with a small dab of water on a cloth.

To put on the DS protectors, i think you only need two things.

Clean environment with low air movement (this means turn off any AC units or fans nearby, and don't do it by an open window). You will also Scotch tape, or some good quality clear tape that doesnt leave residue. I used Highland clear tape (also made by M3)

1. use the included cloth to do a quick swipe around the screen to get the large pieces of dust out.

2. Then use some of that scotch tape to dab all over the screen to get rid of the remaining dust.

3. Lay down stripes of tape on the screen, one overlapping the other enough so that it covers the whole screen (3 or 4 strips should do). It will look like a very ghetto screenprotector. You want the tape overlapping each other so you can just rip it off quickly by pulling at the bottom piece. Tuck in the tape so it contacts the edges of the screen to get rid of dust in the hard to reach places.

4. Remove the bottom layer of the touch screen protector(the layer that is just a piece of plastic with no tabs) holding the adhesive side downwards at all times. At the same time remove all the tape off your screen,. THis will provide a clean slate for you to apply the screen protector. You can have a second person to remove the tape from the screen to make it easier. The point is to minimize the time your screen lays bare and prone to dust build up.

5. Start from one end, either top and bottom or left and right and lay it down gently while aligning the screen. Keep in mind that the screen protector won't fill up the entire screen, there will be a .75 mm gap all around if you center it perfectly. So thats how much you want to leave when you start aligning it. Try not to have your head directly over as you do this as your hair may shed dander and dust onto the screen.

6. if you get bubbles or dust particles while youre doing this, dont worry, just keep applying. You can use the scotch tape to pull the protector partially up, and just use another scotch tape on the other hand to dab on the screen and screen protector where the dust is stuck on. You can do this many many times, and the screen protector will still remain perfect. Just dont get finger prints on it. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if a piece of dust or smudge is on top of the screen protector or below, so try to wipe it off before you decide you need to pull the protector off and reapply.

Aside from the size difference, the DS and DSLite protectors are pretty much identical. I don' t think the adhesives are any different. My experience with both of them has been exactly the same.

Decalgirl ships from DE (which I am guessing is Delaware).

DecalGirl.com
17517 Nassau Commons Blvd
Lewes, DE 19958

In their shipping email to me they even say it might take awhile since CA is a bit aways.

PlayAsia ships out really fast, but they are overseas so if you're cheap on shipping it can take a while for things to arrive. DecalGirl on the other hand takes a day or two to get orders out but they are domestic and evidently, having English instructions in applying the screen protector are really really important.

Oops, sorry about that. I think I must have gotten mixed up with an eBay seller I was looking at just before I ordered from decalgirl that shipped from LA. And yep, DE = Delaware. That's actually pretty close to me.

ive ordered from Decalgirl 2 times. Both times, it took exactly 5 days to reach me in Southern CA.

If you are from CA, if you order on the weekend, you will probably receive it on thursday or friday. They ship via First class mail by default.

The bottom and top of the protector is protected by a piece of film that you must remove before applying. Once the bottom layer is removed, you never touch the bottom with your hand. Since your hand carries dirt and oils, it may ruin the screen. You can however, dab the bottom of the screen with scotch tape if you get dust under there.
So you are to clean the bottom and top of the touch screen protector?
No, you don't have to clean the screen protector at all as it comes sandwiched between two clear plastic pieces to protect it. Just be very careful not to touch the bottom side once you remove it as monkeygod said. Basically peel off the bottom and apply it to your screen immediately.

Some have complained about residue being left on from the protector and that is why Porygon went to the extreme measures. But it's not a needed step IMO.

Whatever place you can find the least amount of dust to be is probably the best. I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I just tried the doored shower just for the least dust possible.

After researching and researching...I ended up purchasing 2 different screen protectors...

1) Invisible Shield from Shieldzone.com

2) HORI DS Lite SP's from Decalgirl.com

Let me put it this way...Go with the HORI. Took way less time to put them on and seems to be working great. I do notice that you need to press a little harder on the touchscreen, but nothing major. I put them on about 3 hours ago and have just played a little since. I think I'm going to have to pull the bottom up due to me putting it on a little crooked. (Yes, I'm VERY ANAL RETENTIVE).

The problems other people were having with the HORI...Well, to be honest, I think they didn't put the right side onto the screen. The ones from decalgirl are the english version. And I even checked on HORI's website to make sure these weren't fake.

Shieldzone.com - GREAT customer service. Screwed up the install on the first set (which is for another post) and called them on Tuesday. They came in the mail on Friday.

Decalgirl.com - Well, not as happy with it. Ordered EARLY Monday morning and paid extra for 2-3 day shipping. I did not recieve them until Saturday. It's only 2 dollars, but SERIOUSLY.

GET HORI! You won't be disappointed!

Just put on my Hori protectors and wow I am impressed with the quality. I've used screen protectors for PDAs before, and the ease and clarity of the Hori protectors are unmatched. The whole layered application is ingenius.

I have to say that the HORIs are indeed the way to go. Even though I had a bit of trouble, it was all my own fault, and it corrected very easily. They're on right now and you can't tell really...I don't know how I managed it, but there isn't a single macrodust speck or bubble underneath...it looks teh perfectz.

well i just joined the botched Hori protectors adding group. I got the top one on right, but botched the touch screen and thus have submitted an order for another one. GAH!

I just got a DS Liite and there is one stuck (light blue) pixle in the top right area of the bottom screen. I know that I can send it back to Nintendo, but I don't want to go through all the shipping and waiting and etc. What would you do?

Well, I just effed up my Hori touchscreen protector. I'm absolutely anal about dust, and a couple of specks got on it as I was applying, so I had to remove it...which attracted more dust...so now my desk it a mess of tape balls and rumpled plastic. Time to order another one. :wall: Or two..
