Rear Projection LCD Burn-in?

I'm on the cusp of getting my first HDTV after a few day of research, and the one bit of info I havent been able to get a straight answer on is if the Rear Projection LCD's have burn in. Some articles say that LCD's don't have burn in, while others say that all Rear Projection TVs have them. The two TV's I am stuck between are these two.

42" LCD

34" CRT

Now, I don't watch much regular TV or sports, so this is mainly for gaming/dvds. I don't want to spend too much money, but both got good reviews for "starter HDTVs" and I want to make sure I don't want to worry about it going bad if I play too much Xbox.

Thanks in advance.

Burn-ins will always happen on CRTs, and I've never heard of one happening on an LCD, so I doubt you'd get a burn-in on an LCD. I'd definitely go with the WEGA.

I agree. Also with the LCD you do not have to worry about geometry issues. Even though that Sony CRT is nice, ive seen a few of them with pretty bad geometry, and that drives me crazy.

Yeah, I'm pretty much siding with the LCD. Going to circuit city tonight to take a final look before laying down the credit card.

LCD is a nice choice for what you're looking for. The only drawback to LCDs is the possibility of dead/stuck pixels showing up over time. But Sony is a good product, and I would assume, is less likely to produce dead pixels.

Even so, I'd take a stuck pixel or two over a burned in SciFi channel bug on my screen.

I have a 55" RP-HDTV (Mitsubishi) for around 5 years now and I have no signs of a burn-in. Unless you leave your TV on for 24-48 hours straight, you will probably not get burn-in with a RP TV. So, your LCD should be fine.

Burn in CAN occur on an LCD projection TV. However, you would need to leave it on for 24-48 hours with the same picture displayed (or the same part of the screen projected, like a border). I experienced this recently when shopping for an lcd projector. A store I went to left the display on overnight on the dvd menu. You could see a slight "burn in" that was being projected on the screen. I've done a lot of research on the projector side of things here (since I own one) and the burn in will go away over a few hours/days if it is not too bad.

I wouldn't be too concerned with this on an LCD Projection TV.

I agree here. This is a great TV. I almost bought this instead of my projector.

I could be wrong, but I think that burn in was image retention, not the same thing. If you leave it on a non static image for around the same amount of time, the ghost image will go away. Then again, maybe that's plasma, but I think it's true with LCD RP as well. Someone feel free to correct me.

As far as that TV, I have the 50-inch version of it, and after about a month, I love it. 360 looks great on it, SD broadcasts actually look decent, and from about 8 feet away the screen door effect doesn't happen. There is a bit of silk screen effect, but you don't notice it after a while.
So far, if I had to name a drawback from the set, it's the cost of bulbs, but that's true with any micro display set.

FYI, while Circuit City wants $1619 for the 42, you can get the 50 at Costco with stand for right around 2k, if you are interested. And really no need for an extended warranty there. So if you are going to have to get a stand anyway, the difference between the stand alone and bigger TV with stand included might not be that much.

Either way, I'd go for the LCD-RP Wega if you can. I don't think you will be unhappy with it.

Oh, and about dead pixels, I do have two, but I only saw them after putting my nose to the screen and looking for them. Normal viewing shouldn't be a problem should you have any.

Wow, thanks for all the help. I'm going to Costco this weekend to take a look. I will definatley need a stand (I have a non hi-def 32 inch I'm replacing) so the 50 with stand for 2k sounds like a good choice..

That Samsung DLP looks great, in fact the first TV I looked at was a Samsung DLP, but in a lot of reviews I read, people complain about the video lag when not using HD game systems. It doesnt happen with the 360, but when the TV has to upscale the PS2 or GC image to 720 from 480, it causes a half second delay. Some people say the Game mode on the TV fixes this some people don't and I'm a little hesitant to risk it.

I hate to disagree with anyone who has the great Dwight as their avatar, but I think you're wrong. Or I'm completely misreading you (a very likely possibility). Plasma suffer burn-ins, not image retention. They can't be jammed out by any moving images.

Warehouse (membership) Clubs are awesome for this. They do offer the extra warranty, but I've never known a Club to NOT take something back, so long as you have your original receipt.

I'm loving this mental image of Mr Schultz with his face right on the screen, examing each pixel.

You're fortunate. Depending on whether you have truly dead pixels (hard to notice) or stuck/fixed pixels (pixels stuck shining one specific color), you may never notice the problem, or it may shout at you everytime you sit and play a game/watch a movie/whatever.

I had picked up a top end DLP early december of 05, and it went back to the store the next day. I must be one of the very few people who can see the flicker, but I was horribly disappointed with its 720/1280 formats, especially in games. This was one of the few times I didn't research a consumer electronic item before purchasing (impulse buy), and I won't do this again. DLP is nice for an inexpensive pseudo HD format, but it didn't cut it for me.

Like I said, I could be wrong. :)

Costco doesn't have an extended warranty, but Sams does.

Yeah, you should have seen it. I could hear B.A. yelling, "get your nose off that screen fool!"

The 42 incher up there is what I have, and I have no regrets about that purchase at all. Well, one: that I could have gotten the 50" model (they're both the same, only difference is the screen size) if I had had more money. You're 360 will thank you for it, because the picture is mind blowing! One thing that is really sweet about this model is the fact that it has component inputs on the left hand side. My only slight grip is that it only has one S-video on the back. At least my component video selector has S-vid ins and outs.

And unless you can lift about 200 pounds by yourself, or have at least 2 other friends, CRT sets like that really aren't worth it.

Correction noted and appreciated.

haHA! I'm in love.

Now I'll have to go rummage around and pull out my games and anime and whatever else Mr Shultz did VA work for. Though after Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, I don't know that things can ever be the same again. *giggles*
