Received a netbook for Christmas from the girlfriend. How do I return it?

I received a netbook from my girlfriend for Christmas. It was a thoughtful gesture but since I have a desktop and a gaming laptop, I really have no use for it. To make matters worse, the netbook is extremely sluggish and my girlfriend isn't exactly a tech guru so there are better options out there.

Before I get yelled at, please note that I bought my girl a designer handbag and since my knowledge of handbags is just as bad as her knowledge in computers, I gave her the option of exchanging it for a different one (which she is considering).

The problem with this netbook (besides the fact that I don't need one) is that it runs Windows 7 Starter Edition. Netbooks are underpowered as it is so I want one with Windows XP. To make matters worse, Windows 7 Starter Edition is coded within the OS so that you can't even change the background wallpaper. I guess Microsoft really wants people to upgrade to Home Edition so they severely crippled Starter Edition.

Since I already opened the netbook, I have a few problems:

1) It was purchased as a gift from Best Buy but I don't have a receipt. I'm sure they can look up the serial number from the PC. Can I return it without a receipt?

2) Since it is opened, I assume I have to pay a 15% restocking fee. Is there any chance that I can get it waived if I opt to get store credit and explain that the netbook along with Windows 7 Starter Edition is a POS?

The combination of Windows 7 plus the weak specs on the netbook means I can't even watch a YouTube video without it lagging. I would LOVE to be able to get full store credit but is that possible without the restocking fee?

You can always call BB to find out what their policy would be. If anything, they would give you a gift card. Why don't you just tell your GF about it and take it from there. At least she knows what's going on. Plus if you tell her and you both are ok with returning it...she should have a receipt for it.

Your girlfriend is going to ask where's your netbook one of these days. Just tell her the truth and go together to shop for a netbook and handbag.

I heard about Windows 7 starter POS, but also heard of people using win7 pro or ultimate and they said it runs fine. I'm thinking of getting one myself but want to put win 7 pro on it. My research has shown that most manufacturers have drivers for xp or win7 so I'm not concerned with wiping it and putting in my own clean install. I would be worried if the netbook you do want to buy might not have drivers for win 7 should you want to use it.

Just say it was a gift, you know the purchaser bought it at Best Buy(assuming your telling the truth) and that the giver opened it to make sure it ran okay before giving it to you. You'd be surprised how being nice to CS will get you things after Christmas. They're also really lenient with "gifts" after xmas, as long as there's nothing wrong with it, I'm sure you could talk your way into getting it returned.

I got one as a gift a year ago myself. I use it for email and gaming on the go. I have dual boot Linux and Windows XP with over 7000+ games...Mostly emulated and free PC arcade games. I play browser based games on it often. I use it quite often when I travel. I also have a ton of e-books and digital comics that I put on it.

I also have a gaming laptop but I only use that for LAN parties.

you might be able to turn it into a hackintosh depending on the model of the netbook...google it

Tell your girlfriend you really appreciate her generosity, but since you already have a notebook, you won't really use the netbook. Ask her to go with you to return it and perhaps you can use some of the money you get, be it in the form of cash or a gift card, to buy at least one thing you both can enjoy (be it a movie, CD, etc).

They can look up the purchase using her credit card, i'm assuming she didn't pay with cash as everyone pays with credit or debit on big ticket items these days. If she paid cash they can look up on Reward Zone id and if she didn't use that then yes serial number should show as from Best Buy.

Tell them you just got it and have no need for it. Say she had opened it to make sure everything was working as it would have been embarrasing to give a DOA netbook. They are a little more flexible this time of the year when it's been purchased from them and not something you bought elsewhere and trying to scam back. Ask for 100% store credit versus cash and a restocking fee. You know you'll spend it anyway!

Good luck and I wish I had a GF who thought a Netbook priced item would be a good gift!

She bought a somewhat pricey electronic as a gift w/o getting a gift receipt? Regardless, I'd still try returning it.

fixed.
I was under the impression that Windows 7 runs as well as Windows XP and is actually optimized for netbooks.
I haven't seen the "Starter Edition", but 7 Professional and Ultimate (that I use) run like champs.
