Recession fueling extremist groups?

Well, only people or aliens disguised as people can buy ammo. Unless the dogs are secretly turning against us.

Look at the gun/ammo sales after Obama won the election. It was as if the assault weapons ban was to go into effect the next day. It's Obama who's selling more guns and ammo than anything else.

Such as when there was gas rationing and you could only buy on certain days the fear of not being able to get it if/when you'll need it forces you to horde while you can.

I doubt there will ever be a need to hoard ammunition but nevertheless people will always have that mentality (Y2K ended the world you know).

Bleh; i'm sick of all this bullshit fear mongering from both sides. Everyone needs to leave everybody else alone.

The right wing crazies (because we all know they're a threat to national security ) are not going to blow up the country.

I know someone who co-owns a gunshop and she says sales of guns and ammo are way up, people are worried that Obama is going to take away their guns.

when things are tough, people are easy prey for extremist groups look to increase their size. They create scapegoats to focus all their problems on, i.e. the Jews, which gives them something to rally behind.

Am I that out of touch with others and the Jews are seriously the ones we're blaming for our troubles? I thought it was the Mexicans and to a lesser extent the Chinese? Bleh. DHS needs to go away.

I don't get the roll-eyes here. Do you remember Oklahoma City?

Get with it. Domestic terrorism is so 90's.

Let it be said: Richard Poplawski was not a liberal. Richard Poplawski bought whole hog into the fearmongering of Alex Jones and Glenn Beck, and now three police officers are dead.

And worst of all, now he's a martyr to his colleagues, and not an example that he's wrong and/or foolish.

The recession stokes fears, sure, but the presumed fear of the "great gun grab" has helped people recruit into white supremacist orgs and the like.

Does anybody really think that the Gov't is going to come for our guns? I mean besides the people fooled by the pundits. It's seems apparent that they use this issue as one of many to rile up their constituencies. Just like gay marriage in the 2004 election.

I didn't realize the background of one RichP from the earlier news stories. But it certainly seems like the logical outcome of this fear.

The expiry of Clinton's assault weapons ban doesn't help but fuel the fear either. Esp. w/ a high-profile firefight that left three officers dead, those who fear the gun grab will become more staunch. "They'll use this to take away our AK-47s, saying such a murder wasn't possible with the .22 rifle he had otherwise," they might reason. And, to those not seasoned in logic, they fail to realize that slippery slopes are logical fallacies - so that many more will take a reinstatement of the Clinton ban (which is a ban on sales, and wouldn't actually take away the guns legally purchased since 2004 - should it be proposed and pass, but let's not let reason interfere with our thinking here) as the "writing on the wall" that they're coming for all your guns.

And let's not ignore how people, of the fringe on the right and those who post in the vs forum, fervently deny the role the American firearms industry and sales play in providing firearms to Mexican drug cartels: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/us/15guns.html?pagewanted=3&_r=1&hp

There's plenty of ammunition (a pun!) to reinforce your fears that a gun grab is on the way, no matter how inaccurate it is.

I didn't realize the background of one RichP from the earlier news stories. But it certainly seems like the logical outcome of this fear.

It's really sad, and somewhat pathetic, that a fight b/w a mother and son over a dog pissing in the house was the catalyst behind three murdered officers (and the negligence of the 9-11 dispatcher who took the call). But to someone with his mindset and his degree of upset (recently unemployed white supremacist who believed in the jewish/zionist domination of the globe, along with the fear of the "gun grab"), and was a fervent Alex Jones supporter/fan, could interpret *any* interaction with the police as a "final countdown."

The Gub'nment has been coming after firearms since the NFA; It's just gotten more sweeping.

Incidentally, when I have to buy my service side-arm post commissioning,I think I'll get something exotic. Like an Uzi.

If they'll let me.

"He has a few weapons. I know he has a machine gun, I know he has a couple rifles and I know he has a couple handguns…They're recreational, and for deer hunting and for everything. I mean, he's not a bad kid," Klimczyk said.

Yeah because when i think machine gun, i think recreation.
I've fired a few at police ranges/mil bases and they ARE fun to shoot. Also,I like this part:
"He wasn't fully a Marine. He got a dishonorable discharge out of boot camp,"

And:
he believed that as a result of economic collapse, the police were no longer able to protect society.

This guy was totally sane.
I'm not fully a Marine, either. I only saw the first 30 minutes of "An Officer and a Gentlemen."
It's like saying someone's " not a full college graduate" after they enrolled and were thrown out before they even bought their books.

Maybe he saw how idiotic the UCMJ is and said "fuck it" (remember, under the UCMJ any sexual position other than missionary is illegal)? Then again, someone concerned with rights infringement but joins the USMC is either severely hypocritical, or fucking stupid.

I'm not sure how much is the recession and how much is the shift in politics. Having a democratic president who's a black man, and a democratic congress, is probably the main cause.

I imagine there was an increase in leftest extremist groups when Bush took over etc. Just the natural ebb in flow. When a party loses power the extremists on that side will get more active.

In all honesty, I'm surprised Obama hasn't been shot at yet.

"I don't wanna be no president. At least, not the first black president.Maybe 2nd or 3rd, but that first $$$$a better watch out!" -Dave Chappelle.

A lot of people are stupid/ignorant. The Congress is so far in the pocket of the NRA there is no way even an assault weapon ban is coming back. I would have bet that the "nobody needs a machine gun for hunting" argument would have carried to the day, but that rational viewpoint has been overwhelmed by NRA $$$.

BTW, I saw "A Few Good Men." All the way through, even. I think I qualify as a Marine.

I may be way off, but leftist groups don't seem quite as...militarized?

No there are some out there. Namely the Eco groups which have a history of violence etc. Maybe less than the rightist groups, not sure on that.

I was surprised as well until I saw some papers presentedon eco terrorist groups at a conference a couple years back.
