Recipe for a good "smoothie"?

Tried Cold Stone's Strawberry and Banana smoothie about a month ago, and I've been addicted to them since. Well, more precisely, I've been getting smoothies every 3-4 days as the mood arises. I've found I actually prefer Jamba Juice one's at the mall to Cold Stone, but Cold Stone is closer to home and more convienent.

Tonight, I thought rather than paying $4.00+ for an "original" size one at Jamba, or the "only" size at Cold Stone... why not buy some stuff at the store and make one myself? After all, I have a kick butt Orange Julius reciepe that makes them a LOT thicker than those at the mall, and it's pretty great. Maybe I should have just made that with a banana...

As it was, I put Dole Strawberry, Pineapple, and Orange concentrate in the blender with 1/2 a banana and 12 ice cubs. Once I'd mixed it up, I tried it... and it was WAY too sweet. The pineapple juice in the Dole concentrate was WAY too overpowering, and I couldn't really taste anything else. To try and take some of the bite off, I added the rest of the banana, a bit of water, and some more ice.

This made a "drinkable" smoothie, but not really what I was going for. So I ask those of you who may know. Hell, maybe one of you work for Jamba Juice or Cold Stone and know. What goes in a good "smoothie", and is there a "simple" way to make a good one at home???

I used to do a mock Orange Julius with:
Orange Juice
Ice
Vanilla Instant Pudding powder

That's pretty good.

I worked at Orange Julius one summer, and found out that the only real ingredients were OJ, sugar, water, ice, and egg. It's harder to get the proportions of that at home though, and the pudding version comes out different tasting, but just as good.

My wife makes these every day. You may need to tinker with the exact proportions, but for a single serving it'd probably go something like this:

4-6 bananas
1/2 bag frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, whatever--you get them by the bag in the frozen section)
1/4 C milk (we use rice milk, so I don't know how regular would work)
1 teaspoon vanilla

Blend until smooth. That's it.

It's pretty much just fruit of some kind, and some kind of creme creme or ice cream.

Some people add eggs. I had a friend that would make one with chocolate mix and eggs with like a pound of sugar.

My friend and I used to make these all the time back in grade school, but we used sugar and vanilla extract instead of the pudding powder. I don't remember how much exactly, but I know it was an ungodly amount of sugar. They tasted pretty damn close to an Orange Julius, though.

i thought the only cold stone creamerys were on the island, geuss i was wrong, but im not a smoothie person, chocolate ice cream shakes do me good, though my bowel movements post shake would prove otherwise

You can check Jamba Juices website to see recipes. Not exact proportions but you see the ingredients. My friends and I used to use the website to see what we wanted when someone went for Jamba Juice runs. My fave is the orange dream machine.

For breakfast every day I use (approx):

8oz of Apple Juice (more or less to adjust thickness)
1/2-3/4 cup of lowfat plain yogurt
1 banana
1/2 cup of some sort of fruit (strawberries, peaches, blueberries...)
tsp. of vanilla extract

I usually use frozen fruit because it keeps longer and adds a nice chill without watering down the smoothie with ice. No added sugar, good protein, and a couple of servings of fruit; damn tasty too.

My favorite snack smoothie, that I got from a bodybuilder at the gym:

1 banana
1 raw egg
Some vanilla yogurt
Some Maple syrup

Mix in blender, yadda yadda....

Very, very yummy...although I'm sure some people won't like this though, something having to do with eating a raw egg....
Only smoothie ive ever made was one part smootie mix, 2 parts vodka.
LMAO!

Now I'm going to have to try to add some vodka to my smoothie mix next time I make some, just for some added kicks!!

Smoothies are actually good for you if used right. About 2 or 3 times a week when I am about to do a brutal workout later in the night, I'll go to Smoothie King and get a 30-40oz smoothie. I only get the low fat or fat free ones. I started making them on my own, and I'm actually understanding the recipe better.

Try adding some lemon juice. I make a smoothie with:

ice cubes
lime sherbet
strawberries
sunny d
lemon juice

Just appoximate the ingredients as you like. The lemon juice is definitely the key, though.
