Recommend a cheapass wireless router for XBOX Live

The-Bavis

CAGiversary!
I am probably going to finally get on Live with the Best Buy deal going on right now. I will need a wireless router of some kind and wanted to know who could recommend one that is cheap and good enough. It will only be used for my XBOX Live connection so I don't need anything fancy.

If you think this belongs in the deal request section, I disagree, but I apologize anyway.

Thanks, compadres.

Stay away from the D-Link DI-624. I have this one and it's a pile of crap. The wireless constantly causes this router to drop and reset. D-Link knows this is an issue and still does nothing to alieviate the problem.

I don't know about cheap, but I love my linksys wrt54gs router...i got it from best buy about a month ago for $79.99...it has the speed booster in it as well

I was hoping for less than $50, but I'll put your rec. on the short list. Thanks.

Linksys WRT54G

$70 is the standard price but you can probably find a deal on it somewhere if you dont like rebates.

Best Buy Link

$20 Best Buy rebate here making it $50.

make sure you check the XBox Live list of routers that are compatible before going out and getting something that wont work.

Thanks for the rec., bombdrop. That looks like a good choice. Unfortunately, getting the wireless adapter for the XBOX doesn't look to get any cheaper than around $80. Anyone know of anything cheaper. I've seen the XBOX branded version, a LinkSys and a D-Link model. All are between $80 and $100.

This is getting expensive!

Anything that is a "wireless game adapter" is designed to hook a single device into a wireless network. A bridge is designed to hook multiple devices into a wireless network. Wireless game adapters would normally be plug it in and go kind of devices, and bridges take a little bit more work to get them hooked into a wireless network.

I'd match the brand for what you have above, or go with the Microsoft-branded device. Find what you want, get the model # from the links above, and toss it into Froogle, Pricegrabber or Pricewatch to see who has 'em.

thats the adapter i bought, to work with a linksys WRT54G i researched prior to buying it for a while, and found that this is the bast combo, i have average lag problems, while seperated fifty feet through a floor and a wall, i recomend it highly

OK, here's my new wacky idea. I buy a wired router and plug this in and use it for the wireless part. Any reason this won't work. I'm looking for simple and cheap. Also, don't want something to interfere with the 2.4 GHz phone and 900MHz baby monitor we have in the house.

Thoughts?

I need to research that logitech thing some more to see what freq. it is on, but they are playing up the simplicity in the literature.

BTW, I appreciate all the help so far. I have another backup plan if this crazy scheme doesn't pan out.

That'll do the job in theory. In practice, as I've never used it, I can't say either way. Probably using 2.4GHz or 900MHz. Might be using HomeRF, which I can't remember their frequency usage.

I got the WRT54 not the speedboaster one for only 39.99 at Sams Club like 2 months ago. It's really good.

I was able to get the Linksys WRT54G for $30 after a Buy.com $10 coupon and Linksys' $10 mail in rebate.

I'll check for some Buy.com coupons for you later - but you should know that if you go with Linksys they almost always have a rebate thing going somewhere.

I have had two Linksys routers, a Wireless B router that I gave to my Dad after I upgraded to Wireless G for XBL, and the WRT54G of course.

I received both mail in rebates in less than two weeks.

EDIT: I just checked Buy.com and it seems that they up'd the price by $5.

It is now regularly priced at $54.99 with a $10 mail in rebate. ($44.99)

$44.99 would be your final price as well (after rebate)- no tax at Buy.com and it qualifies for Free Shipping.

Yes that helps. I'm just going to have to take the plunge now.

BTW, if anyone is interested, I found a preview/review of that Logitech thing and it stated that it was 900 MHz. That's a no-go for me since I have a baby monitor on that freq. already that gets a TON of interference from neighbors phones as it is.

Thanks for all the helps guys.
